DayZ standalone game will have new content every week

With DayZ going solo and moving away from the modding scene, brand new opportunities are opening up for the cult zombie apocalypse survival game. Content is one such market that is ripe for exploration, and possibly exploitation. Although in the case of this standalone, it might be a more substantial enhancement to the game that’ll have more free than paid-for content. Every week apparently.

Writing on the DayZ dev blog via Blue’s News, project lead Dean Hall said that a new inventory and attachment system had resulted in every single in-game weapon being  rebuilt “from scratch at extremely high detail”. “This means that on release there will be fewer weapons in the standalone – but it allows us the ability to continue each week to release content updates with new weapons and items,” Hall said.

Hall also mentioned that the DayZ team was “planning hundreds and hundreds of clothing varieties” with new fashion sets being planned for release every week. As for food and drink items, Hall said that launch day would see a “reasonably small functional set” available to players, but that that list could expand into something “huge”. As for maps and more cash-based extra content, that’s still in the early days according to Hall.

We are starting our planning process for this, but we don’t have any idea how we would monetize it. There are issues with the DLC model we would want to avoid. We’re hoping we will be so successful in sales, that we can just release as a free content update.

Moving on, Hall said that DayZ would also have private server support, but that private hives would not be available at launch. That’s something about bees right? I’m not that technical, so I’m just imagining a gamer being stung by thousands of bees. Why would you want that? Crazy man, crazy. DayZ the standalone game is out sometime next year, and will have players surviving the living impaired in a world where realism and resource gathering takes precedence over blasting away at the living impaired.

  1. It sounds ambitious, but the reality is actually more mundane. They’re essentially going to dump avatar clothing and gear on a weekly basis. So every week you can change your jeans…

I just hope they don’t go the retard route and allow you to buy weapons. That would kill Day Z or at least drop it down to War Z levels of cash-grabbing shenanigans.

Spot on, theres also no guarantees that they will ever actually do the weekly content updates, i hate this kind of advertising before game launch

Dude, I REEEEEALLY hope thats not the case.

“Soooo, its a zombie apocalypse, society has fallen, but wait, I can use my credit card to magically purchase a high level sniper rifle with grenade launcher attachment and 600x scope from a bank that still works even though civilization has ended”

      Ja, right.

In other news, flying unicorns pooping rainbows are outside in the 33 degrees Celcius snow.

If you want to make it realistic, I guess a black market that deals in military-grade weapons would flourish in a post-apocalyptic period. Bullets, petrol and water. The tri-part foundation of the survival pyramid.

Ok, so how do you magically produce funds to pay for said equipment? Blood and semen?

Your idea has merit, but unless you do some resource gathering, or sell other items (like weapons, meds etc), it would not seem realistic.

I’d rather say, in-game black market, but NOOOOO to pay-to-win.

Also, from what I’ve been told, imagine you forking over some hard earned cash for sniper rifle zoomer, and have some bandit shiv you and take it. That is the same as real life crime, yes?

I suppose your credit card fulfils all of it, but in a real setting, I guess everything from sex, water to even the clothes in your backpack could go to paying for a gun. When I enter my credit card details, I’m imagining I just bartered with a packet of doritos and smokes… 😛 (trolling)

…I thought you gonna pay with your banana…

But seriously, it would be real life theft. Unless you spawn with a bazooka every time?

Hey, slap in a lightsaber for $1.99 and I’m sold

I don’t think that will happen, though you never know 🙁 but I think they know the whole point of Dayz is survival and savaging ..when the zombie apocalypse finally happens, we can’t just pay for some guns then poof it appears. But, I’m with you, I remain sceptical.

Lol. The “hive” is basically like a content and co-ordinants server where all the player loot and details are saved, so when you switch servers you still keep all your gear and location. Kind of like “The Cloud” for your character data

I’m surprised no one has made a Sims-like survival game, where it’s essentially the Sims, but set in a zombie apocalypse. The micromanagement of your Sim from bowl movements to hunger would make it even more stressful. Not to mention if it’s a family of Sims, trying to compete with other families, tribes or gangs of Sims, with scarce resources…

So just wait until there is a lot more content in the next 9 months and get it on Steam special. Got it.

@ Banana Jim: The possibilities are pretty limitless as to what they can add. The file structuring of the ARMA series has always been pretty neat, just a drag and drop addons folder. This covers weapons, vehicles and all sorts. I think the reason he talks about clothing so much is because its a big part of the new engine, on the previous you could only customise headgear, but to be able to get different clothing items is completely revolutionary for this game.
