New games can be a risky business these days in the industry. After all, many studios are only one badly-selling title away from being closed down, permanently. Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics is feeling lucky right now though, as the studio is preparing to launch their own new IP in the near future.
“I think it’s an interesting combination of both Square’s perspective and Crystal’s perspective”, executive producer Scot Amos said in the latest Crystal Habit podcast.
Seeing the studio and what they’ve done, they have a pantheon of great properties, if you just look through the history of all the games that they’ve made and that they have, and that they still have. They’re even, as you know, doing some very new versions of those games.
But saying, we have all these great IP, now is a great time, looking at what’s coming in the future, what’s coming up in the console space, what’s going to be happening next. Let’s start now, with a blank page.
We take that kind of bold step of, let’s make something new, something where we don’t already have a finger in that particular pool, and let’s try, from scratch, to make a new game with all of our abilities and skills. What would be a new great experience for our future?
So what exactly is Crystal dynamics working on? Well, it won’t be a God of War clone, despite the fact that the former boss from that franchise, Cory Barlog, joined the studio earlier in the year. Barlog is “actually on a completely different IP”, according to Amos.
Once in a while we might pass each other in the coffee shop area, but at the same time, he’s on something else, so he’s not part of my new IP.
As for which platform the new IP is, rumours are that it could be anything from a next-gen title to a current-gen XBLA game. In the meantime, Crystal Dynamics is still hard at work for a February release of Tomb Raider, and maybe even a new reboot of Soul Reaver.
Hang on, that sounds like a game that is perfect for the specific set of skills that Barlog possesses!
