Counter-Strike: GO loses cross platform play

There’s a new Counter-Strike coming – and it was meant to allow for Utopian cross platform play between PC and PS3 players. The decidedly more open PS3 allows for other input devices – like the fabled mouse and keyboard set-up that PC gamers like so much – so the playing field would be level.

But it’s not happening anymore, blowing hopes of PS3 and PC players intermingling in to de_dust.

The reason? According to Valve’s Chet Faliszek (via Joystiq) it all has to do with patches and updates.

"The beta has proved we want to update not just the beta, but the game itself post-launch frequently on the PC," Faliszek said. "To do that, we need to separate the platforms so one doesn’t hamstring the other. So for that, we have removed the idea of cross-platform play – essentially make all platforms stronger by not mixing them."

That’s a pity, while it’s cool that Valve is focusing on each platform, it does mean that once again the console versions of their games end up being neglected. Anybody who’s played Team Fortress 2 on consoles and Pc will tell you that though they started out as the same game, they’re wholly different now. It also raises the question of what in the hell that big “Steamworks on the PS3” hoo-hah was about if it’s not actually being used.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is set to hit digital storefronts on the Xbox 360, PS3, PC and Mac later this year.
