Good news everyone! While the news that Command and Conquer: Generals 2 shifting to a free to play model hasn’t exactly been met with arms wide open, as fans have lamented over the fact that this latest entry into the franchise would be solely online, multiplayer only. Except that some single-player campaign action might be around the corner. Eventually that is.

When Bioware re-announced the game as an e-sports focused title, it looked like the days of single-player campaigns with cheesy videos were over. But hold on to that thought, as C&C Generals 2 might include that kind of content, as a post-launch extra, according to EA Labels boss Frank Gibeau.

“Does that mean it’s not going to have single-player? No, that’s something we’ve obviously heard loud and clear that is important to people,” Gibeau said to Polygon about the game transition and it’s more “adaptive” structure.

The beauty of free-to-play, is that we can adjust and adapt to what we’re hearing as opposed to, ‘I’m sorry, it’s two months from ship and it is what it is.’ It’s a very different model because you don’t have to build as much. You build in response to your audience.

We started with, ‘How do we build a triple-A Command & Conquer experience?’. Is the best way to go to market, premium or is the best way to go to market, free-to-play? We’re like, ‘We’ll get the biggest market with free-to-play and we can evolve it over time based on what we see happening inside the service.

Our goal is to evolve the service in response to what people want and that’s the beauty of free-to-play: You build as you receive information from your audience. When you build a premium game you have to go way in the hole, in terms of spending out a lot of money building a certain experience and then putting it out there to see how people respond.

Still, following on recent comments and take-backsies regarding green-lighting single-player experiences, at least the remnant of C&C fans out there should be happy to know that they’ll finally get their campaign content as an add-on.

Albeit one that will most likely cost you a few extra bucks, which is what they would have been happy to do, if EA had created the C&C game that they wanted in the first place, instead of after.
