For those who don’t know, Starbound is an indie space exploration RPG with similar gameplay to Terraria and in many ways, Minecraft. You travel to different worlds in search of materials and supplies and each planet is procedurally generated. Since the terrain is movable and customisable, you can terraform a planet to live on it. It was released on Steam on December 5th and since then has sold one million copies!

The success comes as no surprise to those who followed them during early beta testing and open betas. They raised more than $250,000 from 10,000 backers during their first day of their fundraiser. According to Team Chucklefish’s latest newsletter, Starbound will receive a large content patch, which will be the last one to wipe your character saves as the previous patches have. This is good news to those who have already sunk hundreds of hours into Starbound.

The game is expected to be released in its finished state on PC,Mac, and Linux early this year. As well as being ported to the Vita along with several other indie darlings such as Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, Rogue Legacy and the Binding of Isaac: Rebirth. As someone who followed the beta progress, I knew it was going to be popular due to its Terraria/Minecraft sandbox style of gameplay combined with space travel. Although I’m usually weary of games that release in open beta, I was pleasantly surprised with its quality and I urge anyone interested to take the plunge and give Starbound a try.
