Candy Crush Saga goes after The Banner Saga, Indie devs start Candy jam

HAVE SOME CANDY!

I’m going to be brutally honest here: I have no idea what Candy Crush Saga is. I also give zero craps about the game, and I intend to keep it that way. They’ve made cash and continue to do so. Which is why their decision to go and threaten The Banner Saga makes no sense to me. Fortunately, some developers are handling this whole epic trademark saga the right way. By making games.

In news that should not surprise anyone, exploiters of psychological buy now impulses in human beings King.com is now attempting to trademark the word “Saga”, and have put The Banner Saga developers Stoic Games in their Lawyer crosshairs.

According to Kotaku, Stoic Games got hit with a notice of opposition at the US Patent and Trademark office, with King.com declaring that it had 13 trademarks that included the word “saga”. Seeking to herd players away towards the brightly coloured type-2 diabetes of Candy Crush Saga, the main gist of the documents is that King.com doesn’t want their product confused the Viking influence of The Banner Saga.

Because folks are easily duped into spending money on a beautifully rendered visual experience with stunning art and deep gameplay mechanics as opposed to the clip art wonderland that is being peddled by King.com. GUYS WHICH GAME IS WHICH?

If King.com wins their case, then that means that The Banner Saga is going to have to change the name of their product. As a response to all this sugar-coated nonsense, indie developers Uuav and Caribou have started “The Candy Jam”, which challenges anyone entering that development contest to make a game with as much candy in it as possible. Extra points if your game includes the words scroll, saga, memory and apple.

The reason for the game jam? “Because trademarking common names is ridiculous and because it gives us an occasion to make another game jam,” sayeth the Candy Jam website.

Look out for own game soon, Candy Saga of Edge: The Candyning of Apple Part Deux, soon.

  1. They’ve been taking too many of the special candies their new-found wealth has afforded them.

Funnily enough I have to go on training regarding anti-competitive behaviour now, even though I told my boss that I already know how to be anti-competitive & gave examples. Apparently it’s about NOT being anti-competitive.

I think it has something to do with the context of the name? Read something posted by a lawyer earlier saying it is a legitimate claim.

Seems that King is trying to compensate for something financially, maybe loss of Candy Crush income.

@Gavin, did you stop your wife from playing Candy Crash?

I think King.com and the “XboxOnesignoff” troll should get together – imagine the chaos they could reign down on unsuspecting users with their word trademarks and suspiciously placed sayings buried within profile names!

But, with all seriousness, with all these trademarks, pretty soon the next AAA title will simply be called “The”… Or maybe they’ll even get hold of that trademark too! I mean “Whaaaaaaaaaaaattttttt?!”! 🙂

This is what will get me to make me kill off all king.com games from what I have or play.

Fighting with someone for using the word “Saga” in the name of their game.
