Bungie's Destiny takes Borderlands one step further

Destiny is one of the games shown off at E3 that looked awesome, but hasn’t gotten much hype as of yet.  The MMO shooter got our “best Shooter” award from E3, but what are they doing to take the genre in a new direction?

In an interview with Edge, Bungie explained that they were taking inspiration from other open world shooters such as Far Cry and Borderlands.  They will even let players level up using Talent Points.  Beyond revealing that he’s attached to his gun in Borderlands, Joe Staten (the creative lead) explained:

“When we look at a game like that, we look at the things they’re doing well and also at opportunities they might have missed that we can capitalise on. You can party up with a group of people and then go around with that group, but never in Borderlands are you going to collide with a group of other people doing it too. We don’t do that just once or twice in the game, we do that all the time, everywhere. You see other people on the horizon, hear gunfire over a hill and see space magic flying behind some trees, and you know… there are other people out here, that [changes everything]. Borderlands right now is: ‘I’m going to walk into that space and we’re going to clear them out and keep going’. And frankly that’s not just Borderlands, that’s any co-op shooter.”

Destiny is was my first experience of NOT getting nauseous while watching gameplay of an FPS.  That’s quite an accomplishment.  Maybe this will be the first FPS that I can actually play.  In any event, if they can learn from the Borderlands franchise and make things even better, we can expect a lot from this game.

So freaking excited about this… I really hope they pull it off

Game of the Year. I am calling it now. If bungie can pull this off, I reckon its going to be the next WoW. A game that changes the entire industry. Titanfall looks great. But this, in every sense of the word, is going to be EPIC.

Totally agree! I’ve always loved Bungie – I think they’ve gone from strength to strength over the years. And this could well be their “Mona Lisa” or “Sistine Chapel” – the culmination of all that has gone before. Damn, it looks awesome! I am not an MMO fan… But Destiny is about to change all that for me. Cannot wait!

This looks awesome… and I get a feeling they’re going to stage the servers much like WoW, you’ll either be on a PvP server, or a “normal” server with PvP areas.

But everything about this game so far makes me want it… even though I’d probably suck at it 😛

Bungie are masters of huge maps and multiplayer. I hope they make the rest of the game worthwhile.

How does it really work though? Doesn’t matter how big the map is, you have a 100 people in the same instance it’s going to be pretty crowded. Unless I’m totally missing the point.

Not sure, you think the whole world is playable? I know they are trying to do an Eve in tis regard for their universe. Man I hope we are not disappointed!

Don’t know, that’s what it sounds like he’s trying to say. I haven’t followed anything on this game because the MMO label switches me off immediately.
