Brave the snowstorm and solve the village mystery in Kôna

I love horror games! The tension, the cold sweat that follows, and of course, the possibility that some mild peeing could occur at any moment… what’s not to love?

I am of course, lying through my teeth. Ever since I played Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 for you lot however, I’ve taken a bizarre interest in the genre, and I still don’t know why exactly. Still, I’m always on the lookout for the next big scare game to subject myself to (don’t worry, I will get to The Park at some point), and I think I may have just found another project to undertake.

Here’s a preview of Kôna – a mystery game set in a very snowy Canada (via PC Gamer):

The official trailer of Kôna: Day One, an episodic and surreal interactive tale of mystery, exploration and survival, set amid a powerful and ominous snowstorm in a northern village in the 1970s.

Visually, Kôna looks pretty damn gorgeous. That snowy setting looks extra windy, and deliciously dark and uninviting, which should make for one nerve-wracking game.

What is out to terrorise, the protagonist, Carl though? A serial killer? A mysterious, ghostly present? Nope, it looks like he will have to deal with this beast…

While we can’t say why it exists(to avoid spoilers), a Wendigo roams in the game. We have to make it clear though that this awesome half-beast is not there to cause useless jump scares (Kôna IS NOT a Slender-Like).
Here are some non-story-related details concerning the Wendigo:

  • The Wendigo has a heart made of ice. Any heat source will keep it away or destroy it.
  • The creature influences the weather. It creates strong blizzard and harsh weather conditions hundreds of meters around it. So the closer you get, the more intense the weather will be.
  • The Wendigo area of effect also makes animals more “agressive”.

Not there to cause jump scares? Hallelujah, my heart can rest easy!

Seriously though, Kôna does actually look really cool (ha!), so whether it comes packed with jump scares or not, I’d be keen to play it. The first of 4 episodes will be releasing in January 2016.

Yeah I thought the same. Thankfully, the game itself looks awesome 🙂

Agreed… But you know what it reminds me of? Sounds seriously like an old version of Duke Nukem from Duke Nukem 3D… **now it’s all you’ll be able to hear** 🙂

Hi there! I’m Alex, producer on Kôna. Quick and personnal note on this: I do agree that the voice does not quite fit the trailer space. We will work on using a more trailer’esque voice (or tone) for future footages.

That being said, I do think that while it does not sound extra-ordinary in a trailer, this kind of tone is a good fit in a slow-paced adventure game like Kôna. Plus we do have some plans to reduce the intensity of the “old radio” post effect on the voice, which is IMO part of what makes it sound like an old Duke Nukem 3D game 😉

Anyway, you’ll see more of the game in the coming months, but if you do feel that the voice is still dull the next time you hear it, feel free to send me an email at alex@parabole.ca, I’m always open to critical feedback.

      Cheers,

      – alex

I’ll definitely keep an eye out for the other trailers then.
For me I just find the voice a bit, what’s the word…monotone-ish. And guy seemed to talk just a little to fast. I know he need to get as much info before the title screen but I think because of it emotion was a bit left out.
Kinda funny when you said “a slow-paced adventure game like Kôna” because that’s the feel I get but not from the voice.

Can’t wait to see more of this game 🙂

It’s not confirmed yet, but we do plan to release it on console eventually.

You, sir, just made my day! 🙂 That would be awesome – and I will definitely be purchasing it! All the best with the continued development of this game – it really is looking interesting.
