I love internet conspiracies – they are fun and silly and outlandish. My favorite are all the Half Life 3 fake mathematics to prove that the game is actually coming. But Gearbox isn’t going to let you do that to Borderlands 3. It just isn’t in development.
Speaking to Polygon, Gearbox CEO and president Randy Pitchford explained that while there is more to do in the franchise, there isn’t a Borderlands 3. He said that Borderlands 3 would need to be bigger and better than Borderlands 2; plus, if released now, it would need to be on old and new consoles. He went on:
We love Borderlands, and we know customers do too. So we will be doing more in Borderlands. But the thing that, when you think of what Borderlands 3 should be… No. We are not developing that right now. We don’t know what that is yet. We can imagine what it must achieve, but we don’t know what it is yet. I’m not going to fuck around with you like Valve does with Half-Life 3. Look. We know we want it and we know it should exist, but we don’t know what it is yet. But we are doing things in Borderlands that we’ll announce soon, that are good, and that I think people will be really excited about if you love the franchise.
But don’t worry, you’ll still be getting more Borderlands in other forms, like the Telltale game that’s coming.
I must say, I appreciate Pitchford’s honesty. Rather than making people hold out hope, endlessly waiting for Borderlands 3, he puts us all straight. So, if you want more Borderlands fun, go get more DLCs or play the new Telltale game when it arrives. Just don’t expect an all-new entry in the franchise for the foreseeable future.

Yeah it is. So much fun to play, and with all the dlc it makes leveling through multiple play-throughs on multiples characters a lot more fun than just the base game.

But they have, the last Headhunter pack is about to be released, Gearbox Confirmed that it’ll be the LAST DLC for Borderlands 2.

They left themselves a lot of room to maneuver with the ending of 2. Plus we never got to go to the Hyperion moon base.

Did you do that little side quest on the top of the tower where you have to fight all the buzzards where you summon a container from the moon base that smashes a goliath? That made me giggle.

That was really funny. I was expecting them to blow him up or something, but dropping the container on him? Priceless. 😀

I kinda have to defend the DLC practice here because unlike games that releases yearly Borderlands 2 has been out since September 2012 and the third one isn’t even in development yet. This doesn’t reek so much of leaving content out and adding it later just for DLC sake. I mean the new DLC for BF4 has four maps from BF3. So it’s not enough that you buy the game, you have to pay extra for recycled content. That’s just insane.

I loved the idea of the older games that had expansion packs. It was a completely new story that came after the original

I liked borderlands approach to the DLC, each on the main DLC packs kept me busy for hours and hours, turned a game that kept me busy for for 50 hours, into a game that kept me busy for 300…I dont even mind the headhunter packs.

Their campaign DLC was fun, I enjoyed all of them. What pushed me over the edge was having separate DLCs to increase the level cap.

February 18, 2014 at 10:09
Yes. That pissed me off. Loved the missions (pirate booty not so much) but making me pay for 11 level cap? Screw that.

TBH, Im fine with waiting, they made us wait for borderlands 2, and it turned out to be a great game.
Id rather wait than be faced with a rushed game.

They already made two good Borderland games. Now it’s time to make at least 2 new games before even thinking about Borderlands 3.
I would like to see Borderlands 3 released near the start of next gen consoles. After Borderlands 1 and 2, I am not interested in Borderlands 3 now without new IP’s being released first.
We can not have another generation of sequels with current gen consoles. We need new games. We don’t need sequels. Fuck you, Call of Duty, while I’m at it.

A new-gen Borderlands…? Now that’d be cool. Till then, will have to make do with the milked-till-it’s-dead Borderlands 2. 😉

If I were him i’d also say that to get you to buy the DLC for the current game.
