BioWare didn’t know how to start Dragon Age: Inquisition

Writing compelling narratives are difficult. Writing ones that twist and turn like the tale in Dragon Age: Inquisition are far more complex than I can even imagine, and I envy the skill of writers that are able to craft such stories. But it’s a daunting task – even for the best writers – and Inquisition’s prologue suffered the most during development.

During a guest lecture at the Department of Game Design at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, BioWare creative director Mike Laidlaw, senior writer David Gaider, and actor Freddie Prinze Jr. sat down to discuss the narrative structure of Inquisition, and what the team found the most difficulty in creating. It seems like the start of the game was particularly troublesome, with the entire thing being re-written nearly seven times.

BioWare seemingly struggled with crafting a palpable reason as to why player’s characters would want to undertake the seemingly impossible mission of closing the Breach, with the team messing with various character combinations and motives to get the feeling just right. Laid law describes the first encounter with Chancellor Rockerick, who wasn’t even considered in some versions.

“That scene is one that we re-worked probably seven times over the course of the game. It needed to setup that initial opposition… we needed the sense that people weren’t willing to step up and solve the problem… I remember one of my clearer pieces of direction that I said to David [Gaider] and his team was that we basically needed that guy that shuts down the Ghostbusters containment unit,”

In some versions Rockerick didn’t exist, leaving Cassandra as a more hostile opponent for players to diplomatically deal with. In other versions Leland took the Chancellor’s place, but all of this eventually boiled down to the pretty effective prologue the game has today.

Also, could someone possibly fund a semester for me at this university? I’ll love you forever.

  1. In related news, F@#$ eskom!! Finally got home after crawling from
non-functioning robot to non-functioning robot, only to have our area’s

I had load shedding when I got home last night. Thankfully the Steers around the corner from me has a generator. Power was off at work now from 12 as well, but unfortunately we have a generator. Win/lose.

Power went out at work as well, and it felt just like in those sci-fi films: Everyone looked up, and then somebody said “Just wait, the backup generators are about to kick in.”

Haha no I watched the movie two days ago for the first time! “My mind is going. There is no question about it” gave it away for me! Epic movie btw, had to google it afterwards, Stanley Kubrick is a fucking genius.

hahaha!! Ah this is fantastic. I love it when people are negative about life. Makes my life sound awesome! Seriously though, watery pasta…that’s disgusting. We had 4 hours of loadshedding last night, so I feel your pain. Luckily I was at Lumineers, so missed most of it.

Right now I’m bearing witness to a truly selfless act of sacrifice, all in the name of a noble cause. My laptop is giving the last 30 minutes of its life to my cellphone, so that I can play some crazy birds while waiting for the power to come back on.

4hours spent exploring the new Normandy in the most majestic setting that I have ever seen in a game.

So much freedom of choice. I even spent some time planting Elfroot in my new garden 🙂

tbh, i expected more from skyhold. from the way zoe was going on about it while she was charging up the hype train, she expected more aswell, wanting to customise ALL THE THINGS.
i didnt feel the customisation and expected more crafting and requisition things to make skyhold my home.
we were promised customisation and that is one area where i felt let down.

I wanted the scaffolding gone earlier, i wanted to kit out my room, change rampart patterns and drawbridges and multiple towers and fix the giant hole in the side by the dungeons and marvel at the changes i had made to this eutopia.
instead, all i got was a 2 build quests and a bunch of “tick the boxes” customisations.
if they did a brief cinematic everytime i changed the decor, or my bed or throne, i would have spent more time shopping for stuff, but that i had to load in and out between the undercroft, main hall and bedroom, just to see my new bed with no other changes to my room, was a bit inconvenient, not that i spent any time in my room anyway, since theres nothing really there.

the Normandy was amazing, i didnt have to walk miles to talk to my team, everything was conveniently and logically placed and the customisation aspect wasnt included with the normandy, it is a stable element in the game and the upgrades you did do to it, saved team mates lives on the collector mission.
i was more impressed with Skyrims home building DLC than I was with skyhold, it felt more mine.

How cool are those dragons? Two down 8 to go.
It seems like Skyrim came along and pissed all over DA2 and I am sure Bioware were ashamed. They certainly made up for it in 3.
The adrenaline was pumping during my first 40minute dragon fight. The sound effects are off the chain.
Where do I buy the plans for a new throne?

aye, dragon fights in this are way better than skyrim.
my first dragon kill was marred by the dragon not dying, it glitched and just stood around, also ruined the dragon hunter achievement, ive killed all 10 dragons, but havent got the achievment =/

you dont buy throne plans, you find them, you can buy beds and windows and stuff from a guy in val rouyeax (cant remember spelling)

bad luck man, I have had a couple of freezes and enemy lock ups myself. A giant decided to fly 100 meters into the air and come down frozen lol.
Also, while fighting a dragon on the top of a Colosseum its smaller dragons cornered me and pushed me off of the edge. I then scrambled back up only to find that its life meter had fully re-charged 🙁 SAVING THAT BUGGER FOR A RAINY DAY.

The Knight Enchanter path is kick ass. Its just as addictive trying to manage the barrier recharge timing as it is doing the hardcore top down strategy. As a casual hack and slasher its perfect for me. Does not get boring.

Also, how cool was the Grand Ball? When you finally find out what the Court Approval rating is lol I got kicked out. THANK GOODNESS I KEEP MULTIPLE SAVES.

50hours in and plenty more Elfroot to slay.

heh, those 3 Colosseum dragons made for a fun fight, got a bit lucky on the last one who is like level 24 or something silly, managed to land a 20k damage crit near the end that pulled the fight back, was stoked.
walked out of that 3rd dragon fight all like “started from the bottom now im here”

found the grand ball boring tbh, spent more time googling reactions than playing.
was a nice change of pace i guess, but by the end of it, i was with my team, was ready to slay stuff.

The game ONLY starts and fully opens up giving the player full access to everything after 25hours.

THATS HOW YOU START A GAME 🙂

i love me some long games.
but after 90 hours spanning over nearly 2 weeks, I was thinking I may wait a while befor starting my next playthrough.
game was rock solid though, exploring actually felt worth it, the landscapes were pristine and the attention to detail on dragon design was glorious, they were so majestic until i shoved arrows in their eye sockets.

Man, I need to get stuck into this game. Everything I’ve played so far has been epically amazing!! But I’m so far in Far Cry 4 (over 50%) that I know if I stop that now, and focus on DA:I, when I come back to it I’ll be kinda lost… So focussing on Far Cry 4 till its completed (probably during the course of this week) and then, hopefully, I can focus on DA:I from next weekend.

But from the 10 or so odd hours I’ve played so far of DA:I, it is seriously amazing!!! A damn-near flawless masterpiece!
