Bioware cans Shadow Realms to refocus on The Old Republic

No shadow realms

Dragon Age: Inquisition was a massively successful title for Bioware. Winning all kinds of awards, Dragon Age is being called Bioware’s most successful launch of all time. Of course they will make more Dragon Age games, but not this year. Instead, the focus will be directed at some other games to make fans extremely happy.

Over on the Shadow Realms blog, it was announced that the game is officially canned. We knew that it was delayed and getting retooled, but now it is totally off the table. Instead, Bioware will be focusing on some other projects:

These include additional ongoing enhancements to the award-winning Dragon Age: Inquisition, as well as the next game in the Mass Effect series and other new IP. But the biggest focus for our team in BioWare Austin will be on Star Wars™: The Old Republic™. As every Star Wars™ fan knows, this is a massive year in the Star Wars universe. We have some great plans for expanding this epic game this year, and look forward to sharing the news about those plans with our players in the coming weeks.

EA CFO Blake Jorgensen is teasing that it’s actually “a couple of new pieces of IP that are very exciting” – I wonder what we could see on the horizon for the story and character-driven studio. Of course many of us are extremely amped to hear more about the new Mass Effect and Star Wars games – good thing the Humble Bundle has released all the Star Wars games for a steal so that we can fully prepare ourselves.

I’m glad that Bioware scrapped the Shadow Realms project. While it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be, it just didn’t seem like a good idea. Maybe they can develop something else that includes interesting multiplayer, but I think that they should play to their strengths and ensure that the focus is on telling interesting stories with unique characters.

What would you like to see from the new IP that they’re working on? They already have high fantasy with Dragon Age, and sci-fi with Mass Effect and Star Wars. I suppose it makes sense for them to do something more modern or realistic with aspects of fantasy or sci-fi thrown in. Or maybe they will come out with something completely unexpected and wonderful. We can only hope, right? At least it should make EA’s E3 press conference more interesting.

      YES YES YES YES.

Sadly it won’t happen. The Old Republic was meant to be KotOR3 in a sense. It will never happen

Next one to go is the co-op bubble… not saying it won’t exist anymore but it won’t be hyped up the way it is currently.

TOR is quite a good game. Played it for a while ignoring most of the group stuff and treating it like Kotor. Interactions with quest-givers is fully voice acted. Splendid game…just wish it was offline SP or offline co-op.

Yes, me too. I would even be happy with a retooling it of it to make it work on mobile or cloud. I don’t like being tethered to a Windows PC to enjoy that game.
