Battlefield 4 on consoles requires “compromises”

The “next generation” hasn’t even started yet, and already it seems that games on the new consoles just won’t be able to compare to their PC counterparts.

That’s according to DICE, who says that they’ve had to make a few compromises to get Battlefield 4 up to spec on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Speaking to Videogamer, Battlefield executive producer Patrick Bach says that DICE is  “doing as much as [it] can” with the next-gen versions, “but we need to compromise in some places”.

The reason for that, which should make those smug PC elitists even more smug is that  “from a CPU/GPU perspective, no, [PS4 & Xbox One cannot match PC].

“PC will always be… You can just add more to a PC. There’s always more. The game supports to a big extent better hardware, but not completely, so it won’t be night and day.”

So if you were hoping that the next gen consoles would knock the master race off its perch for a bit, you’re likely to end up disappointed.  Still, console gamers won’t be getting a terribly experience; at its core, Battlefield 4 on consoles will be the same game. Just slightly less shiny.

“I think the cool thing that we are extremely excited about is that you will, for the first time, get a full Battlefield experience on a console,” he adds. “It’s the same core, it’s the same game, it’s the same feature set, there’s nothing left out, so to speak. But there’s also the 64 players, 60FPS experience that you haven’t really seen on a console previously which will move it up a big notch and eliminate some of the gap between PC and console.

“Then it’s more of a question on graphical fidelity, graphical detail and stuff like that. But then on the other hand, [PS4 & Xbox One] have some cool features that [benefit] it being a console game. You know, how Battlelog is integrated into the game in a much better way, you have the second screen features, you have the whole friends network which is super nifty on the consoles, and stuff like that.”

Battlefield 4 is coming to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on November 1 – with a “next gen” release available later.

Wait until BF4 releases on PC and then I’ll pass judgement. The AMD Jaguar CPU is essentially a mobile CPU and I believe that it will be the weakness regarding the overall performance of consoles.

          • boet

            August 28, 2013 at 09:38

Ja, that wont equal or outperform either the xbox one or ps4. The 7790 can barley run the current games at max. I would say maybe a Geforce 760 or better, but the reality is that we have to wait and see what the new consoles are capable of. My estimate would be 10- 12k

            August 28, 2013 at 09:50

GTX560Ti can run most games still on high to ultra. Really don’t need a 7 series unless you absolutely need to run ultra with AA and all the heavy things turned on all the time

          • boet

            August 28, 2013 at 10:06

The 560ti runs current console games at max. Im thinking what you would need to run PS4 quality graphics. I dont know but Im guessing you would need a beefy card to match it.

I dare say it runs things better than current consoles already.

But yes for comparison to PS4 you would need at least a 660 I reckon. But most certainly not a 7xx series

It’s difficult to say, as we don’t know what exactly the next gen consoles are capable of. But a new PC, from scratch, with software, will costs quite a bit more. If only looking to upgrade though, about the same or even a bit less.

A PC from scratch now to play BF4 on high-ultra would set you back about 12k. However you could spend 8 – 10k and be set for atleast 3 -4 years IF you are ok with medium settings in about 3-4 years time. If not and you are a graphics lover who needs to have the best of the best then I hope you have a big bank account.

I spent 10K on a PC 2 1/2 years back and I’m still playing games on high – ultra. No issues.

Outdated in the sense of you can’t play the latest games on full graphics anymore, no.

I have roughly the same build, I’m gonna assume you have the i5-3570K and not the i5-2500K (I bought my PC 2 years ago). I also have an OC’d GTX670 and 8GB of RAM, and I have no problems running anything at full graphics. I even made Metro Last Light my bitch (albeit not with full x16 AA, but you don’t need that anyway).

And this is why I was getting so upset with Sony and Microsoft when they were spewing things like “The next gen consoles are better than PC and stronger” bla bla bla.

We all know that PC will always be stronger. It was designed that way. Scalable architecture.

Next gen consoles are amazing pieces of hardware and are capable of things the previous generation of consoles could only dream of doing. They are capable of handling graphics on almost the same level as a decent machine nowadays. They are fantastic.

But when people start seeing that the consoles are unable to perform like both MS and Sony have been saying it will (and both sides are guilty of over promising on performance here) it’s going to cause more hate towards each respective company.

This is why I constantly said that they need to stop marketing by trying to compare to PC. Market to your console players saying the graphics are much, much better than previous gen consoles and just leave out any mention of PC. It’s Apples and oranges and has no place to be compared. It’s just going to leave a sour taste everywhere.

Now it’s already coming out the woodworks that consoles are going to be slighly less capable when developers start using it. We all knew this logically, but because of promises made by both MS and Sony we were all kinda still hoping that it would be true. Even us PC lovers the “Master Race” as it’s so often called here were waiting in anticipation because if it was better on console then the PC scene would change drastically as well. nVidia and AMD would have to start coming up with cheaper options to stay valid in the gaming industry on PC, prices would need to have dropped to compete with consoles.

Now, it’s not so much the case because promises made by the console players were pretty much lies. Or at least only half truths.

It’s sad that consoles won’t beat next-gen PC gaming, it would have upset the apple cart and changed the gaming scene for a long time. Now… Not so much as it could have

Same old story… I wonder how many people would actually see a difference if PC and Console versions were played side-by-side… especially when in heavy battle action.

The PC/Console war nearly always gets fought in the graphics arena, but on a practical day-to-day basis, it comes down to whatever feels comfortable for you.
I have a top-end PC that smashes my PS3’s graphics in the mud, but I still end up picking up my Dualshock and enjoying my games on my couch, 42″ TV and plug ‘n play simplicity.

Is pc better than console? The answer is a big NO, and here is my reason. If i give you R6200 and tell you to go buy me a pc(the tower + decent keyboard and mouse), i can promise you is won’t even come close to what the ps4 can do. What people are doing is like comparing a BMW M5(ps4) to a lamborghini reventon (R17000 gaming rig). Just imagine every single “gamer” has the cash to fork out R15000 for a console then SONY could bring out a console that can do 15 teraflops + and that’s the facts ladies and gents. It’s time to stop this pathetic argument and move on.

actually you could build a PC that could perform as well with R6200. You just need to be smart about it and realise that you don’t need the top end to do what the PS4 does. The PS4 already does it with hardware that’s already almost 2 generations old (The GPU anyhows)
Most gamers already have a KB+Mouse they are happy with so you don’t actually need to include that in the price.

it is possible. But yes, it won’t last as long as the PS4 will because unlike on consoles, PC games are generally made to run as good as it can instead of “able to run on this spec console”

The saving grace is that PC games have graphic options to set so that you can drop it to medium if need be and it will then still be as good as if it were made to run on your hardware.

The big thing people don’t realise is that you don’t need to have the best graphics on a PC to enjoy the game. You can have your machine run the game on the same fidelity level that your console does (Next-gen anyway) for roughly the same price and if you are happy with keeping it at that level of graphic quality you will be set for just as long as the console will.

I’m going to have to disagree here. To my eyes (don’t know if I’m unique here) as soon as you drop 95% of PC games’ performance to anything below ‘High’ they really start to look quite terrible and in some ways worse than their console equivalent – the games really are intended to run at optimal settings and when you change this textures, anti-aliasing and the like seem go out the window destroying what is intended to be a beautiful game. With consoles the devs know exactly what they’re working with rather than what they could be working with.

Agree and Disagree. It all depends on whether you always want the best (then you buy a monster), or just want to enjoy the games (then you just keep with it)

I will use ARMA III as example, looks superb on Ultra! But really not spoiled at all if you set on medium. (I played on medium settings in alpha version due to a crash)

I don’t agree here. I will use my own PC as an example.

Some games drop to about 30FPS when set to ultra on it. I’m a spoiled child so I prefer 60FPS all the time. I then drop to high or medium and the games still look good. That or I leave it on high or ultra and go down to 720p instead of full 1080 and suddenly it’s 60FPS again.

That’s the same as current gen consoles are capable of and more.

So yeah, medium is still fine. I agree that less than medium and you have trouble but medium and up is really still good.

I don’t agree with the R 6200 sentiment. Developers gets so much more out of consoles (when doing a direct hardware comparison), begin a “closed system” and all that. At the beginning of a generation your statement may be true (if only listing the price for an “upgrade”), but as the time goes by, the next gen consoles are able to get so much more from their hardware. The Last of Us is a shining example of this.

I Bought and built my own PC (Already had a Monitor, Keyboard etc.) for 7.5k a year ago and I can max anything. And I will be able to with just a GPU upgrade be able to near-max games for the next 4 years.

“it is possible. But yes, it won’t last as long as the PS4 will because unlike on consoles, PC games are generally made to run as good as it can instead of “able to run on this spec console””

Not an entirely valid statement Llew. It’s not like the hardware degrades, it’s that new hardware allows for higher settings on scalable engines. Doesn’t mean what you have is performing any worse, simply means there’s a whole other layer of performance/resources available that developers take into account (eventually, it takes quite some time for devs to start tweaking for rare/exceedingly expensive parts).

At the same time, Nvidia and AMD are constantly releasing driver updates which improve GPU performance dramatically, much like Microsoft and Sony deliver tweaks/updates to their machines routinely, or developers giving love to their engines over long periods of time.

Basically, the hardware you have in your PC, just like your console, doesn’t just start performing worse, because new hardware is out. It just doesn’t necessarily have the horsepower as the newer hardware.

To put it in perspective, over the lifecycle of the PS3/360, it’s not like the hardware got better or anything, developers simply refined their processes and engines. Same thing happens on PC, while also making room for new resources made available by newer technology.

I absolutely agree with you. I said much the same as you did now but thanks for going in to more detail. Wasn’t sure how exactly to word it and you said it perfect. What I said was a lot shorter: ” You can have your machine run the game on the same fidelity level that your console does (Next-gen anyway) for roughly the same price and if you are happy with Ikeeping it at that level of graphic quality you will be set for just as long as the console will”

Ahhh I see now, my apologies Llew, my first read through understood your meaning a tad differently. All good 🙂

It’s kinda cool though, both consoles and PC’s share this quality. Over the course of their lives, games simply get better and better because developers are always trying to improve and refine their techniques.

Lol no worries my comment was kinda dancing like a maniac on both sides of the fence.

And yes, both consoles and PC games grow better over time. The only difference is that you can push a PC beyond its limits if you want with hardware upgrades. What most people don’t seem to understand, as you pointed out, is that yeah sure you need to upgrade to get the better visuals, but if you don’t upgrade you can still enjoy the game at a base graphics level. Those base levels don’t change and remain the same. They have to so as to accommodate the consoles of the day

          • Brian Murphy

            August 28, 2013 at 18:53

Not just consoles of the day, but even the lower end PC’s. That’s why I like seeing companies disregard the lowest common denominator and push the high-end from time to time. Clearly, not all devs can afford this…but the ones who do, really show everyone what’s capable currently, and moving forward. And they push developers AND Gamer’s to start dreaming of the possibilities for the future. Imagining what new worlds and environments that are possible, with hardware moving forward. Basically inspiring a whole new generation of games and experiences that we can all immerse ourselves in.

It’s vital that this keeps happening, otherwise the evolution of games will slow down to a crawl, only advancing as developers work on years old engines (UE3), while having to sacrifice in other areas (map size) in order to add in newer bells and whistles. On static or old hardware, that’s simply forcing devs to sacrifice one thing, for another.

          • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

            August 28, 2013 at 18:57

yeah. It’s a balancing act. That’s why people who are all about visuals (crytek etc) will always be important. They force the industry to continue to grow

          • Brian Murphy

            August 28, 2013 at 19:05

Well, on the surface, Crytek was only about visuals. But they were also up there in the AI dept as well…not Stalker levels of enemy AI. But they were close.

We _really_ need more companies like GSC Games (Stalker) and Bohemia Interactive (Arma)…those companies have been pushing/have pushed the boundaries of an immersive game environment far beyond what most of us are used to.

A R15 000 console is a cute idea, but regardless of what the specs are, consoles will always be non-upgradeable making it a pointless endeavour to go crazy with console specs and prices from both the manufacturer and consumer’s points of view. I don’t understand why PC gamers are so up on themselves (hiding in their mom’s basement) and console gamers are such insecure fanboys (having a fit and weep when it’s mentioned console versions look like crap compared to the PC version). FFS, we all play games…who cares about the format? If you can afford it, keep your PC decent and get a console or two.

Haha, true. I pre-order about 2 games on average a year (just to be part of the hype train now and again), but other than that, I don’t pay more than R 200 per game, if even that much. Games at cash Crusader are R 130 for PS3, and R 100 for Xbox. We also have a “toy store” locally that makes you pay R 150 for ANY 2nd hand games, and if you trade in ANY game, you get the “new” game for R 50.

If not for the 2nd hand market, I wouldn’t touch consoles as I just can’t afford gaming at R 700 per game.

On that basis, console is great. I ain’t hating or nuthn. The whole ‘Next-Gen is better than PC’ is just a marketing scam in my opinion, to get more fanboys to buy games new or whatever. Second hand market is great! 🙂

Valid sentiment. I generally wait for most titles to come down in price but make exceptions for titles like TLOU, Forza, GTA and Starcraft. Nothing wrong with 2nd hand (pre-loved?) titles. Exactly why I’m in no rush for the next-gen consoles, they need larger libraries first.

As someone who forms part of the Master Race (heresy incoming), I fully agree. We’re sort of comparing apples and oranges here. The main focus of a console is gaming. It is built from scratch that way, with an OS specific to gaming. While it can do other things, those things are limited compared to a PC. A PC in itself, even a completely gaming-focused one, is still a piece of equipment that is meant to do so much more than a console. Hence the name “Personal Computer”, not “GC” (Gaming Computer).

Fact is, your everyday gamer doesn’t build and tweak every component of his PC to be specifically oriented toward gaming. And most components in a reasonable price range are still geared toward generalization, so you can still take some work home and do it there. My PC is worth a couple of 10’s of thousands of Randelas, but I use it for work as well. I built it as a gaming rig, but it still does so much more than that. A console has every component, driver and piece of software aimed at gaming/media. Obviously the argument has to come in that the consoles need to be affordable, otherwise they would never be successful, which is why there is not the same level of tech in them as a gaming PC. An equivalent-specced untweaked PC probably can’t match a console, solely due to the fact that it hasn’t had millions of bucks in research put into it to see how to make it work as efficiently as possible just for gaming. Not to mention the fact that console games are made specifically for a set type of hardware, whereas with PC, the games aren’t as optimized, as developers have to cater for a large array of different hardware and hardware combinations.

I could go on much more, but this is why, ladies and gentlemen we really are making an awful lot of noise of nothing, instead of just all enjoying the gaming.

      TROLL DISCLAIMER: Master Race FTW!!!

the games will look just as shiny to us on consoles who dont have top end pcs pushing game to the max. Frankly graphics on ps3 and xbox 360 were good enough for a long time only now showing age abit so next gen I aint worried they gotta turn it down a bit for consoles.

Personally, it comes down to the exclusives. The last of us alone warrants getting a PS3. The Halo and Gears series by far the best coop experience I’ve ever had. Don’t listen to me, I’m drunk. Sets cape on fire and flies away.

The way i see it again is that PC’s will always be better. Consoles will get better, but will reach a limit. The problem is that if they should ever have to make next gen consoles upgradable then everyone would class it as PC’s. There are pros and cons to these things as well. With Consoles you pay one price and that basically sets you up for the next few years whereas PC’s have to be upgraded every few months if not a year. Now many will say yes, but i been using the same pc for all the new games for about 5 years etc etc just with not being able to play the newer games at full graphic settings and they ok with that.

Fair enough… but thing is this… games are made to look really stunning and with a console you get a constant top quality product whereas with PC if you can’t afford to get that type of image quality without sacrificing a lot of FPS’s then you will have to dumb down the graphics. The blunt truth is that PC graphics will always be tops. It has the advantage of advancing every few months. Consoles dont have that privilege. IF consoles had that privilege then we then can start comparing graphic quality etc etc

Very well said and so very true, which is why I dont care much for pc gaming anymore… I got tired of turning down settings and having to upgrade for a game… mind you you couldnt play properly till you upgraded…

That was always the issue. Also think about this one for a second. You buy a R15 000 PC without a monitor. You still need to buy a really good monitor to get the lovely eye candy. Who wants to play on a 19inch monitor nowadays anyway. then you buy games. Fair enough PC games are quite cheaper than Console, but you have to always upgrade. Thats where your money keeps on going. PC part prices have been on the increase a lot more often laterly whereas with a console. You pay say R5800 (PS4) and buy a game which in all honesty is expensive (R600 etc etc), but no matter what game you buy you will ALWAYS get that great graphics you want from the console.

Also I dont know if you agree with this, but you get some sort of satisfaction seeing them bump up graphics on consoles months or so later just on how they find ways to get more out of the consoles. I love the feeling of playing say Forza 2 and it was like damn wow that looks good and then Forza 3 comes out and you like wtf? How did they get that game looking better than Forza 2? then Forza 4 comes out and it just makes you feel all good inside lol

I wont liem I loved Forza 3 and then bought forza 4 and I agree I was like they look so REAL!!! O_O I mean hell even look at Gears of war 1 compared to GOW 3 , They really know how to push the consoles. And GTA5 I for one believe will push the current gen consoles the most. If they dont have noticeable texture pop ups that alone is huge feat with how little ram the current gen have I mean 512mb its scary what consoles can actually put out.

yeah Gears of War 1 compared to 3 is a big difference. The developers work harder at what they have available and when they get it right then it just shows what they can do with little tech. Im still Playing Forza 4. Im at the Elite League now and im only completed 3.8% of the game. Its crazy how large this game is. As you said for GTA5…. its definitely going to push the current gen the most.

Consoles are just far more convenient. Not better, more convenient. And that works for me and many other people.

To make an analogy, consoles could maybe be like road cars. You buy it and drive it and if its a good car you have lots of fun.

PC’s would be like race cars, which require constant maintenance, large budgets and lots of research and tinkering to get the most out of.

This article serves no real purpose other than to create a forum debate. A fixed hardware system can never compare to the ever changing PC landscape. There is no point in even mentioning this because it is forgone conclusion. Anyone who thought otherwise is smoking their socks. Its pretty pathetic that a game website would resort to this sort of reporting in order to create a meaningless war of words between people based on what their preferred method of gaming is. There is enough bs in the world.

I have a long list of reasons of why I hate consoles and the majority of its market, but reduced performance and graphics is not one of them. I think PS3 and Xbox 360 games look just fine. Anyone who thinks that’s the reason to join the master race is just a poser and doesn’t belong here. Don’t infect us with your n00bness.

What happened to no half measures here ? By changing your comment you have inadvertently proved that you seek approval from a complete stranger giving you attitude for no good reason. You need to go see a shrink, Not just because of your need for approval, But for the fact that you show signs of a irrational mind who spend his time hating a perfectly mundane piece of hardware that has no impact of his your life whatsoever and for all intent and purposes is completely harmless.

I personally reserve hate for criminals, You know, Rapists, Murderers and Pedophiles. Each to his own.

You gathered all that from two comments? Your mail order psychology degree is really paying off. I was not entirely satisfied with my comment, such bad grammar is unacceptable and I felt it required elaboration. Furthermore I seek no approval from a complete stranger so don’t flatter yourself.

PS. Good on you sir. I commend thee. :-/

And that’s exactly why there’s only one hardware manufacturer for PCs. Oh wait, there’s more than that? Oh yeah. Last time I checked there’s thousands of different PC models, and nearly all of them are unfit for gaming. The only difference is that they don’t fit into definitive ‘generations’.

“So if you were hoping that the next gen consoles would knock the master race off its perch for a bit”

Then you don’t understand how technology works, how PC’s are built, and how a scaling engine built for PC, makes use of all resources available on any hardware set.
