Australia links gambling to iPad games for kids

Oh dear Australia

Why so many people want to move to Australia is beyond me, if you want to live in a nanny state with nice beaches and still have some slight freedom then you may as well move to Cape Town. In another stunning act of stupidity the state of South Australia decided it was a good idea to post the following adverts to try and get people to stop gambling.

Gambling-Starts-With-Games

Yes that’s a little girl using an iPad and the geniuses in the government of South Australia feel that this is the way people get addicted to gambling.

Unsurprisingly the gaming community in the region were in uproar about their hobby being turned into a negative once again and have petitioned to the government not only about the imagery used but also the slogan “Gambling starts with games”.

Now I’m not doubting their research, I’m sure a lot of people who play video games have also gambled in their life but you are once again running into the issue with causation and correlation and the researchers should really have put more effort into their job if they wanted to tackle the real issues at hand.

Doing our own in office survey it was found that 5 of us game quite extensively and there is only one of us who has a slight gambling problem that is being worked on, but can you guys and girls figure out which one it is?

Let us know in the comments below and also a question directly to the mountain dwelling people below, are you happy with how much of a nanny state Cape Town has become?

Oh good grief (also superior Dejavu here. Didn’t lagz post this already last year?)

That’s a stupid thing to say. That’s like saying people who drive cars are more likely to clean themselves by bathing or showering.

Loads of people game as a hobby. Surely a vast majority of them will also do some gambling because guess what. Many many people gamble.

I could then simply turn around and say “Being old causes you to gamble and it all starts with Bingo”

I won’t lie, these F2P games are extremely evil. I am DEAD SERIOUS. There is something ungodly addictive about some of them and their design is such that you feel a great temptation to us MT. Almost right.

Government decides what is good and bad and actively prevents you from being exposed to the bad stuff. Doesn’t sound so bad….

Problem lies in that not everyone agrees on what is bad, so when a game or show is released that the government decides is too violent/sexual etc, it is banned.e.g. Game of Thrones or Spartacus series, Aus edited out alot of the sex/nudity and some violent scenes (which is pretty much most of Spartacus).

I’m surprised they haven’t banned drinking and smoking yet.

Well technically there is a strong link between the way gambling works and the way gaming work, game developers have figured this your years ago. You take the leveling up system in any game now a days, if you want a certain skill set you will not care if you spend hours playing to obtain that skill set , gambling is similar in the sense that people will sit for hours and gamble and not care about the time passing. But as for the fact that gaming leads to gambling, I say it is total stront!!! I enjoy gaming, your odds of winning in a game is much higher then sitting a whole weekend in a gambling house.

Same logic, shopping malls use artificial lighting and calming music to distort your sense of time to keep you from leaving, “gambling is similar in the sense that people will sit for hours and gamble and not care about the time passing”.
      Thus gambling starts with shopping.

Well let’s see, the study is Austrialian & LG has one Australian writer, so the degenerate gambler must be Stephen! It makes perfect sense if you ignore proper logic.

Obviously it’s The D that has a gambling problem. And it’s all Zynga’s fault with their texas hold ’em games that even a five year old can enjoy.

People gamble on sports too. When is Australia going to ban sport?

The focus appears to be more on children playing gambling games, than children playing games in general.

Specifically gambling games which have been changed to make you win more.

I agree with their approach, and actually think that blowing that LazyGamer blowing the matter completely out of proportion is on par with the first impression that one might get from the advertisement. At least the advertisement has a clear link where parents can find out what it’s all about and decide for themselves whether it is a problem or not.

Check my post about how shopping malls lead to gambling. It’s about as specific as the add.
I.e. Add implies all games cause gambling, I imply all shopping malls cause gambling, when in reality it’s like you say and only some games encourage gambling and only some shopping malls encourage gambling.

I also doubt that more than 30% of people who see that add would check the website to see exactly what about games would lead to gambling as the add is clear that any game can cause gambling.

Advertisements have limited space and at least points to the right info, what is lazygamer’s excuse?

If you are an adult, and you make decisions based on one picture without actually following up and doing your own research the jokes on you.

Random thought. Games can be played with sticks, pillows, hula-hoops, stones soccer balls, dolls, action figures, toy trains and who knows how many other objects. Does this mean that all these games would also lead to an someone to start gambling?
