…If you’re in Japan that is.
Games are great. Hell, it’s the reason why we’re all here. But mini-games within video games? That’s just the cherry on top of a delicious sundae. If you eat cherries that is. Or you aren’t lactose intolerant. Dammit I’m insensitive this morning. Moving on, one such brilliant game hidden away inside of a brilliant game, would be Triple Triad from Final Fantasy 8.
An addictive card game, the idea was simple. Players would be given a set of cards that had four numbers point to a separate direction. For example, one card might have the numbers 4-7-8-2 on it, which pointed to the directions of up-down-left-right. You’d have a board of nine squares to lay down one card per turn, aiming to take control of your opponents cards. And if your number could be greater than the card placed next to or above it, you’d conquer that card. Simple! Here’s some video of it in action, on a mobile device in Japan:
It’s a Japan-exclusive for now, but its exactly the kind of game that I’ve been begging for, for years now. The Japanese version looks like it has just about all the cards from a whole bunch of Final Fantasy games, as well as the advanced tactics needed. There’s no word yet on whether or not a western release is on the way, but I’d imagine that by the time this story goes live, the iOS app store will be flooded with several cheap knock-offs.
Your move Square Enix.

So many memories. Pressing square instead of X and seeing that the npc is up for a duel was such a great feeling !!

This is major. Triple Triad is probably the most loved mini-game in the entire franchise.

Which of course requires that you love the franchise first. 😛
Also, this requires that you both love the franchise AND live in Japan. Incidentally, the place where 90% of the fan base lives.
😀

I’m not surprised. There isn’t much to distinguish North and South Japan in terms of gaming interest.

Agreed. But dude, don’t you remember having to play the Triple Triad master so you could get the most rare card to turn into a weapon part? GAHHH!

Having to finish play the ultimate master to get the right elements for the last weapon was a BASTARD! I can’t think about this game any more!

This is terrible news. TERRIBLE. I will get this game and never get anything done. It was so addictive in FF8 ;_;

Triple tried isnt “better” than Hearthstone, it blows it out of the sky.
