Assassin’s Creed Unity kills Ubisoft stock

Ubi stock tumble

Assassin’s Creed Unity was meant to relaunch the franchise on new consoles (and PC). It promised to be innovative and unique, offering what players have apparently wanted for years – the ability to stab people with friends. However, it’s off to a shaky start, and the Ubisoft stock is feeling it.

At the time of writing, Ubisoft had lost 9.33% in its share price. The drop’s timing directly links it to the release of the two new Assassin’s Creed games. However, considering the relative lack of attention paid to Rogue, we can confidently point fingers at Assassin’s Creed Unity.

Unity is currently sitting with an aggregated score of 76 on Metacritic. This seems to be primarily attributed to the sheer amount of bugs riddling the game, although there are some deeper issues, too. Destiny currently has the same score on Metacritic – a game that is generally perceived as having been panned by critics and has also led to some tumbling stock prices for Activision.

Can we please pause for a moment and note that a 7.6/10 isn’t actually a bad score? It’s a pretty good score. Anything below an 8/10 or even a 9/10 is being perceived as a horrible experience, when usually achieving a 7-8/10 is quite an achievement. That said, there are some issues with Unity, and compounding that with Uplay difficulties making it even worse for people on PC, it all becomes a bit of a mess.

I understand the investors are wary now. It makes sense that they’re selling of stock in fear that the game won’t reap the same rewards as usual. However, I’m fairly confident that Rogue will still sell a ton of units for those who are on older consoles, with Unity also gathering momentum once the bugs are ironed out. It may have tarnished the franchise’s reputation, but I doubt it will be calamitous in the long run.

Ubisoft needs to learn a bit to consider their customers.
Happy customers = good reviews = good sales = happy investors
    NOT
Satisfying investors = money = screw customers

Yeah, there’s been a shift in how the world works. The problem is that big corporates are way too afraid to “take a risk” and change.

They know nothing about the environment they’re catering for, that’s another problem.
But Ubisoft is beyond hope. At least EA is trying really hard to get things right.

I don’t know if they’re beyond hope – but they’re on a slippery slope. If they’re not careful, they could be winning some awards, while EA laughs. Just saying.

KoA was amazing – that combat was frenetic and fun, and depending on how you built your character, the game played differently. I finished that twice, despite the low MetaCritic score. 🙂

These Assassins games were being made during the same work model as Watchdogs. I am sure Ubisoft just want to get these games out, and get them out of the way while the rest of the budget gets pumped into FARCRY 3.5.

A pity all that PR spin last month just made things worse.

Lets hope the 1080p/20fps Farcry 3.5 delivers or they are fcuked.

This really highlights why review scores have to be so high – it’s not the journalists, it’s the gamers.

Every problem we have as gamers with the industry, we have created. Seriously, gamers – wake the eff up. Honestly, 70+ is a great score and I’ve enjoyed many games that don’t get more than 70 – some of my favourites in fact. So why is it seen as bad? 50 is bad. 70 – not. It’s just not super excellent. Not everything CAN be super excellent. If it was, then that’d become the new average, the new 70. We need games in the 60 – 79 range, so that the 80+ games can exist.

Saying that, I’m aware of the other issues that are entirely UbiCrap’s fault, there’s no excuse for that. UbiCrap, you need to wake the eff up too. Fucking corporate money grabbing bastards.

As was mentioned before, 70% for an indie/cheaper game is good. 70% for a AAA game that will cost you around $60 is bad. I would rather get the game on sale for a cheaper price or a GOTY/patched version. Then 70% is great, but now 70% means it probably has a lot of bugs/problems

Well, if it’s between AAA and indie then I’m afraid the last five AAA games I bought were complete wastes of money. I would rather have paid $60 for some of my indie games.
I don’t care about who made it or how pretty it looks. If I can sink hours into it, they can charge me $60.
But I’ll still consider a game rated 70, because not everyone has the same taste. I’ve often enough bought a 90 rated game only to find out that it’s not worth the download time. ESPECIALLY a metacritic score.

That may be so, but we reserve or money for games that score high. A higher score means to me a higher probability of liking the game. $59 for a 75% game? I’d rather not risk it. I don’t see how its MY problem for them creating a sub par game that we where expecting.

See that’s my issue. 75% ISN’T sub-par. 50% is. 75% is actually really good. Usually a game will score 70-79 because it won’t appeal to everyone, or has a few things that can be overlooked.

Read every 70-79 review and that’s what you’ll see. Not just the score – read the fucking text. Watch videos, decide for yourself if you like. I do. But expecting to only get 80+ games is just narrow minded and childish.

Respectfully I don’t find it childish that every game I get scores 80+, its just a choice for many gamers, especially with the rising software costs, a game now on the ps4 costs anything between R700 and R900, that’s excluding the now almost universal day one patch which increases costs because carriers in SA charge bandwith, also exlusing the DLC’s and season passes…etc . Factor in that the majority of people who can afford these games are of a certain age group and employed and thus they might not have that much time anyway to invest in this hobby… naturally anyone wants to get bang for their buck…
After driveclub I have learnt to be extremely tight pocketed.
I cancelled my pre-order of AC Unity after the whole frame rate and peas saga as well as the American almost 1 gig day one patch which I think we will not be exempt from.
Sooner wait for its retail price to drop or get it second hand…nothing childish there, only maturity

Your decision to cancel wasn’t based on a review score – it was based on a number of things. That is 100% fine.

My issue is with people seeing 75% and going “no way, much crap, no buy” like mindless morons.

I myself have to budget – I can afford one game a month. One. So I’m very discerning. But a review score of 70% isn’t a deal-breaker. I’ll put the same amount of research into it that I would an 85% game. Case in point: I won’t be buying Civ:BE, but I happily spent my money on Endless Legend instead (this month). I don’t regret it. But review scores didn’t influence that one bit.

          • Rags

            November 13, 2014 at 12:45

But review scores should and be influenced by things like shitty performance, huge patches etc. If game x is scores 90%, it should sell more than the same game x scoring 75%. I don’t understand what your objection is. Its only fair? Those expecting it to score high 80’s or in the 90’s should rightfully reconsider. Nothing childish about it.

          • ToshZA

            November 13, 2014 at 12:51

The problem is that 90% games don’t always deliver for every person. I hated Dark Souls. Hated it. It wasn’t frustrating – it was dull and uninteresting. I never finished FC3 because I got bored. But Endless Space, Reus, and Van Helsing have kept me captivated for ages. The difference? Some minor “flaws” OR just not mainstream appeal. In every case, every game needs to be considered on more than just review score.

If a game scores 90% but isn’t great, then it shouldn’t sell as well as a game that scores 70% but is fun. That’s what I’m saying. Look at Diablo 3. Sure, they fixed the issues – a year later. But it got 90% scores, yet was a broken shell of what it could have been. Scores shouldn’t determine sales – gameplay and enjoyment should.

People should also stop taking other people’s opinions (including mine, yes) as the final word. Think for yourselves, and realise that a 70% game CAN and often IS fun. FUN. The reason we play games in the first place.

Sounds like you guys are arguing two different things. Review scores ARE crap and misleading (though I wouldn’t say entirely useless). You’re beating a dead horse on that as no one will disagree with that. But Unity DESERVES the ratings it’s getting as well as the ‘no buys’. It’s a mess of a game technically right now, which is a major part of a game’s enjoyability. If they can somehow get patche(s) that fixes these issues (which I think they will at some point, just probably not very soon) then eventually it’ll be a great game. The big, giant flashing bright spot that no one is talking about for this game is that the technical issues seem fixable, unlike if it had a bad story or the gameplay design was bad. Hopefully that is true and it’s just a matter of time.

Anything below 70 for me just means I’ll wait for it on a sale or I’ll wait until it gets cheaper to justify the price/quality. But if it’s still 70 and above I definitely won’t overlook it when I’m browsing for a new game.

Investors are running AAA gaming. Stock holder meetings and quaterly predictions monopolizes the board room and is filled with discussions on how to increase profitability beyond the $60 price for a yearly game. Uplay blocks legit consumers from enjoying a product whilst it is meant to prevent piracy. Buggy games are pushed out the door because everyone is connected and can be patched later, deadlines have to be kept at all costs. Yet it will sell millions anyways. Same goes for the yearly crap Activision and EA serves us. Especially sport titles that’s the same as last year for the most part except for a new number and a new roster that a pool of typist can type up in a day.

If a person is going to use a 10 point scale, 5 is average! Not 7.

A bad game is therefore 4 or lower.

I blame media (and by extension Metacritic) for this stupid situation where anything less than 7 is bad in gaming. If everyone starts scoring properly then we will all learn that 5 is average and anything above that makes it a good game.

Yeah, I know what you mean but most reviewers seem to give an average game a 7/10, a bad game a 5/10 and a terrible game a 3/10.
Because of this I treat all reviews as if they are use some kind of weirdly weighted score or are actually x/15 rather than x/10.

Right now I am reflecting on the “bad” year of games and it pisses me off!!! The publishers have these new gen consoles, etc and they just seem to be wasting all the gamer energy in sucking every ounce of fun out of games at the moment with the big culprits being Ubisoft and EA of course.

And I say reviewers should be calling them out far more harshly than they are. Games getting 7’s makes it seem OK but they far from it.

I bet MS are seriously regretting partnering on AC Unity and doing that bundle.

With the amount of grind in the game to upgrade and then putting microtransactions on top of that, it’s not a surprise people aren’t happy. Forget bugs. Remember that games with bugs can still be considered amazing. Just look at Skyrim. It was bug riddled but people still loved it.

AC:Unity can still be loved with its bugs. The problem comes in where Ubisoft thought it was a good idea to put in that virtual paywall. Yes you don’t need to pay but if you look at what things cost to upgrade with ingame cash compared to what you need to pay with external cash you can start to see their intentions. They want you to battle and then buy upgrades with real cash out of frustration.

I think Ubisoft have just put in one of the major nails in their coffin. If they continue like this I doubt we’ll see Ubi around for another 2 years.

I think reviewers should pan them for this. Ever so often reviewers just ignore this and do not act like the consumer protectors they are meant to be. Micro transactions for a single player game, wtf!

When is the Lazygamer review for Unity coming out if it has not already. If possible could you give it 2 scores. One based purely on the gameplay and the other based solely on the performance issues. I hate to see a review score come down for a game if it has good gameplay but poor performance because of optimization. Only if it is possible.

The problem is that performance is a big part of gameplay and overall enjoyability. The bright spot in all this on the other hand is that the issues in this game ‘seem’ fixable, unlike if it had a bad story/characters or the fighting system was poor or something. The problem is by the time it happens (assuming it doesn’t happen soon), most of us will have moved on and the anticipation will have fizzled out.

I’m laughing because it couldn’t happen to a better publisher. I’m sad because the nightmare that is Unity just makes me that much more paranoid about how The Division will end up. If it even gets released.

About time they learn to listen to their costumers and it’s nice to see consequences to the last few years of douchbaggery

AC Unity has been junk since I got it. I’ve been through the franchise since the first but this makes AC3 look good. No story, flawed co-op and a character that is dry. The best were Ezio and Edward. Hands down!

They obviously pushed this product out the door too quick. It also would’ve been nice to have a female player character option like was originally planned. Gamers are willing to wait for quality.

The entire Assassin’s Creed series is questionable at best. The assassins/hashashin as a historical group are an interesting subject, but Ubisoft have been fucking it up for years with bad ‘Da Vinci Code’ templar bullshit. AC3 was alright combat-wise and the hunting was good. Black Flag was awesome because there was so much pirate stuff to do that I could ignore the rest of the shit. Unity? Back to business as usual, from my point of view. Templars, undermining history by making significant characters only relevant in the context of their connection to Templars, and a bunch of paid murderers trying to pass themselves off as morally superior to the rest of humanity.

Hey, Ubisoft, how about this – either make a historical action game, or make a game where you play a hired killer (you know, an actual assassin). Don’t try to do both. Notice I said “try.”

Unity sucks, I broke the game disk in pieces after the first half hour of gameplay, such a damn shame when all the other Ac’s were great, I feel bad for all the worthless time they spent on making it.
