One of the most requested features for Assassin’s Creed over the years has been co-op play. It seems that it’s not enough for players to don the murder-hood and stalk and kill all the things, they want to be stabby with friends. The newest Assassin’s Creed does just that, but it wasn’t a simple process.
In other Assassin’s Creed games, the competitive multiplayer was an entirely different part of the game. When the developers got to work on Assassin’s Creed Unity, they wanted to unite that single player and multiplayer experience. However, according to senior producer Vincent Pontbriand, it was very complicated to change this; Assassin’s Creed was built as a single-player experience and it didn’t work to just shoe-horn in the co-op aspects. In fact, all the systems had to be rebuilt to allow them to be replicated over a network:
It took years of development to reproduce and redraft all of our sandbox features for a shared online experience.
Of course, this also means that the old version of multiplayer doesn’t fit anymore. Why change to a completely different game to play against your friend – instead, the focus is solely on co-op and competitive multiplayer has been dropped for Assassin’s Creed Unity.
Assassin’s Creed Unity is coming to PC, PS4 and Xbox One on 28 October and will boast some mighty pretty collectibles. I am excited by the new-gen only version of the game – they are able to do so much more to add depth to the game. I was worried a bit about being forced to do co-op when I don’t actually like playing with other people. However, the developers assured me that if your character is powerful enough, or you have enough skill, you can still do all the co-op missions on your own; they will simply be much more difficult than if you had a friend to help out.

The co-op won’t be forced. One of the developers said that co-op is optional, so solo players can play solo. Which i personally prefer.
