Back in June, we told you about Orena, a new organization aimed at organizing and hosting eSports tournaments. Well, they are starting their Dota 2 Cup next week, and it is huge!
On Wednesday, 26 November, the Dota 2 Cup will kick off. The competition will take place over the course of a week, and registrations are open until Sunday. There’s no fee to sign up, so if you haven’t done so and you have a Dota 2 team, it really might be worthwhile for you. The first place prize is R5000 and 5x Steel Series Sensei [Raw] Na’vi mouse. Second place will score R2500 and 5x QcK+ Na’vi mousepad while third place will get R1000.
The response to this tournament has already been huge. Big names in local Dota such at Energy eSports and Bravado Gaming have already registered their teams. They are joined by 57 other teams. That’s right, 59 teams have entered for this tournament! The double elimination bracket was only designed to handle up to 64 teams. I wonder if they will add another bracket or more reserves if the registrations keep flooding in.
There can really be no doubt, Dota 2 is enormous in South Africa. Local eSports is growing beyond a fledgling group – tons of teams keep registering for events and our top ranked pros are gaining international exposure. Now I’m just waiting to see some gaming houses and more training boot camps opening up.

I still cant play DOTA, its not a learning curve it’s a learning cliff. But soon holidays will be upon us and the learning shall start 😛

I’ve found the opposite actually. I picked up and played, and am playing against people much higher level than me and doing well. I don’t see where this cliff stands? So far, its enjoyable and fun, and when you lose (and you will) it sucks, but you learn.

No, I tried the first dota at a LAN once many years ago, and got raped something awful. Never played it again.
Then a few weeks ago I picked up DOTA 2, and have been loving it.

Yeah competitive play and pubby play are different 🙂 try watch some of the pro games (like get a cheap tourney ticket or something if you dono which to choose :P). Its really really awesome!

I’ve been watching some of the pro games, its so different to pubs. Pubs at my low level (5) are a joke mostly. People running around clueless, I mean with an enchantress I was owning more than the carries. Playing at lvl 30 or 40 is far more interesting. Last night, we did 2 pubs in a row, same teams (was funny, and not intentional), we RAPED them first game, second they won but we fought hard. The one guy even said “Thanks for restoring my faith in DOTA.
I’m just waiting for a tourney that I want to watch though before I buy a ticket.
Edit: I need to specify, by late game they were raping us, but it wasn’t all out slaughter from the get-go.

I have never been an exceptional MOBA player 😛 and by cliff I mean this game has a butload of items to memorize and the map has lots of ways you can move about instead of the usual top mid and bot…and a flying donkey XD

The only organisation trying to make esports big in south africa in my opinion. Even DGL which has telkom backing them cant match a tournament like this? Pretty pathetic. Orena will make esports in SA big! go time!
