Apple supports games without in-app purchases

Pay once and play

I despise in-app purchases. Micro transactions are a blight on the gaming industry, even if they are what’s keeping half the publishers afloat. Still, far too many people are plagued by unintentional bills, and almost no game is safe from the constant plea for more money. Apple already changed the classification from “free” to “get” on the store, but now they’ve gone a step further.

In a new category called “Pay once and play”, Apple is promoting those games which don’t push for in-app purchases. Under the new category you’ll find three sub-categories: Recent Releases, Blockbuster Games and App Store Originals. Prices obviously vary, but you’ll find some real gems here such as Threes! and Thomas Was Alone. Obviously the goal is for those people who are willing to pay for their mobile gaming to not be constantly harassed about spending even more money on a game they already purchased – it’s bad enough when free games have in-app purchases, I can’t stand it when paid apps have the same.

Will this encourage people to invest in their mobile gaming library without fear of in-app purchases? Will this help bring down the in-app spending crisis? Who knows. It probably won’t do much to curb the ridiculous spending in games like Clash of Clans or the Kim Kardashian game, but at least it will promote people paying for quality games and enjoying them without any pleas for more money. Good job Apple – sometimes you get it really right.

They should have this for all game platforms, it would be fun to see how EA would try to get into this “pay once” category

This will be nice. These pay as you play games all seemed like rip-off schemes from the first one I encountered.

Yes, yes, yes! Death to micro transactions.
