Dmanit I'm missing some pieces

Yes the day has finally come, the Xbox console One review embargo has dropped and we can now compare the two consoles directly against each other.. well we can compare external reviews because Microsoft South Africa has not received any Xbox One consoles for us to even look at never mind review.

From what I can find, and I could be wrong, but Polygon is the only site on the planet that thought it was a good idea to give a console itself a score in their review. Now I’m all for review scores on games, I feel it makes the reviewer really contemplate what they have written and put their neck on the line with a score. It also helps lazy readers who just scroll down to the number at the end.

But to do this to a piece of hardware that is pretty much useless without the software seems absurd. Anyway they did it. And according to them the Xbox One is a solid 8 while they only thought the PlayStation 4 deserved a 7.5

So let’s all point and laugh at Polygon for being ridiculous.. and then I’m going to go cry in the corner about how beautiful their articles are and how I wish I had millions of dollars to pay for that.

But they aren’t the only site to drop a Xbox One review today, Rolling Stone broke the embargo early to state that the Xbox One is a slice of the future and that while the PS4 wasn’t the entertainment hub they expected the Xbox One definitely is.

Engadget has come out and stated that the Xbox One offers the best multitasking of any console and that the games and user interface are incredible. But it’s still missing the streaming, sports and upload studio.

Arstechnica on the other hand thinks it’s a quality machine but it isn’t worth the $100 extra and they recommend going with the PS4. The Telegraph doesn’t go that far but it does state that the content isn’t here yet to justify that high price tag.

And that’s the same angle Kotaku takes, it’s not worth the purchase yet but what surprised me about their review is that they complained about the software not working correctly. Something I didn’t expect from Microsoft.

To round things off we have Cnet who also state that the Xbox One is a solid system but with dodgy voice controls and that extra $100 it’s just not ready for the mainstream purchasers just yet.

So all in all there are quite a few mixed reviews and the overriding recommendation is that unless you are a hardcore gamer (Hi, everyone reading this site!) then you should hold off until Microsoft can fix some of the software issues. Which is good news for everyone as it means the console itself is a solid piece of kit that just needs some software tweaking.

Then by the time it’s released here any software issues should be sorted out.

In all honesty Things are looking better for Ms right now. Ps4 has not had great success with launch and many of the things people loved, they have taken away.

Xbox also wont have that feature (ext. drives) until it gets an update. PS4 will head the same way, guaranteed.

1,000,000+ units sold on the first day. If that’s not great, then your standards are too high.

Great for Sony, but with so much functionality gone from the launch console, its like a barebones gaming machine. It’s all good and well saying “we made it for games”, but to remove lots of simple things such as folder management etc. that was there on the PS3, that’s not really ok. So over 1 million people have now got a console that plays prettier games than, but has much less functionality than its predecessor.

Its like going backwards. I can forgive maybe the Blu Ray movies thing, that’s not a biggie for me, but the small things as well? They add up. At least MS tried to push towards the future, one most gamers weren’t quite ready for, but at least they’re pushing forward.

            November 20, 2013 at 10:52

I’m not talking about the functionality, I’m specifically talking about the launch. Fastest console EVER to sell to 1,000,000 units mark. But I guess people will never be happy; everyone complained that XBONE was too focused on media and not games. Go figure

          • ToshZA

            November 20, 2013 at 10:54

This is the internet, everyone will have something to complain about. This news about the functionality loss is disappointing, because really if the functions were there on the PS3, and used, why take them away? That’s not progress, and while the launch itself was very successful, the console seems to be a disappointment. 1080p but at 25fps was just the beginning it seems. 🙁

And I so wanted to support Sony this time around.

the bitch of it to is it doesnt even cost them anything to add those features yet they took them away. obviously whoevers decision it was to remove these things just really has no idea of what people want and like. its similar to facebook taking away the photo options, youtube tearing down the comment and reply button, the new ps store that is slow as shit on ps3, and last the newest version of windows nobody asked for. they always do this, why do companys feel the need to give us things we dont ask for and take away things we use lol. all we needed was a new ps3 that could run games better. that was it, was that so hard to do? apparently

          • MG

            November 20, 2013 at 16:43

It is shitty, but I’m buying a PS4 to play games regardless. Movies and series can always be played via other options. Its a pain the ass though.

how so? I may not be quite as good with its extra functionality, but it does multitasking, voice controls, pretty much everything the xbox one does but the cable integration, and I hate cable companies, so that feature is useless. I wont debate the quality of kinect vs ps camera, but the camera is still pretty good. Also dont see the added value of snaping apps vs switching between them. sure it’s neat, but I rarely would ever use it. best example for me is surfing web while watching tv maybe, but I have laptop and a tablet.

The Verge also rates consoles. 7.7 for PS4 and 7.8 for XBO.

Giving a console a rating out of 10 is weird. But whatever, both consoles seems to have massive potential and I suspect this coming gen is going to be awesome!!

1% of the consoles has problems. That is extremely low and to be expected. We get to hear about these problems due to 1000 000 consoles being bought in 2 days. This is the first console launch with social media being so prevalent.

Regarding features “lost” – give it time, Sony is working on it and the PS4 will be a different beast in one year’s time. The XBO can’t stream until next year and are also missing a ton of features currently. Both consoles will have launch problems.

            November 20, 2013 at 11:33

they wont re add those features spathi unless the community backlashes about it like the mp3s. if they wanted those features to return they would be there. they already know how to add them but they didnt. there basically just trying to do less and get more money. just like charging us for ps plus to be online yet the online was unstable as hell the first 2 days and u still cant even play battlefield yet. you have to troll these companys and complain. if you give them any comfort zone they just dont do anything

I don’t see how the PS4 launch was disappointing? There are bound to be glitches in the release of anything and I can guarantee you that the Xbox One launch is going to also experience that. In fact I saw a tweet last night that reporters using the Xbox One as part of the press launch had to repeat commands multiple times for the machine to work. THAT would irritate me. Rather press B to go back, A to go forward!

Things like the controllers are falling apart after 1 weekend use, things like no external drive support. no changing themes, apparently the downloads of games ect could be put into folders, that is gone man. and many many more features lost, that ps3 consoles had

I’m gonna sit on the sidelines and see how it goes. At the moment, all we can do is guess… Heck, the XBone that hits our shores in 2014 (hopefully) might have the software upgrades, etc. already installed to make it a great machine. Only time will tell.

Kinect auto-login could be haphazard, commands needed to be repeated 10-20% of the time, in some instances commands had to be very specific, while at the same time not giving an indication that the command was incorrect so you sit there wondering if the command was correct, if it even heard you, or if it just doesn’t know what you said.

honestly you can rate sony as a console because the features they took away are horrendous. id give the console a 3 and the only reason it gets a 3 is because the game graphics look good and run smooth besides the disconnections. for me i picked ps3 instead of xbox360 only because the ps3 did more media stuff it made more sense to have aunit that did more and have free online but i always felt graphics wise 360 was better. so now you take all that away out of the ps4 and what use is it having a ps4? a ps4 is basically a xbox360 clone. better off sticking with a ps3.

Only a 3 for the PS4? Out of 5, or out of 10? I’m assuming it is the latter. If that is the case, you sure must like the multimedia capabilities. In that case, I agree with you. Rather stay with the PS3 because it has evolved into a spectacular multimedia machine. Not only that, but you most of the games coming out for PS4 will be on PS3 as well. When (and if) you decide to embrace next-gen, start comparing the multimedia capabilities of the consoles. Since the Xbone is launched as a multimedia machine, at this stage it is looking like the console more suited to your needs. However, it is a bit too early to write off the PS4.

These type of articles are pointless. Most people have already decided, they are either getting XB or PS4. There is going to be very little crossing over. (Yes some people will get both, but I’m not talking about them). I will never buy an Xbox because of what happened with RROD. That’s my preference. Based on experience. Ive had PS3 for 4 years, never once had an issue. Plus, all my mates are on PSN. It comes down to preference, so can we please stop with the “PS4 is more powerful” or “XB1 can record TV” B-S. It’s not helping anyone.

ps4 was a major upset for me, it plays game and thats it. which would be fine its a gaming console. but ps3 showed us all the things extra that a console could do with no added price (3d movies, mp3s, video movie storage, etc) ps4 basically is a stripped down ps3 with all features gone and a smoother graphics display. oh and you can share videos to 1 place and live stream to one place. the other costs a few 100 bucks to stream lol) being a longtime sony fan i am pissed off

The media capability is coming with a future update. People should stop viewing the consoles as static. It is a dynamic platform and constantly changing. So, you being a Sony fan, rest assured that Sony has heard your plea and will be addressing that in the future.

People forget that the consoles have JUST launched. The PS has from the start been promoted as a gaming console where the XBONE has been aimed more on the multimedia side. However, i do think that both manufacturers will want to make sure that the consoles have a good adoption rate, without too many failures, before adding/unlocking new features (which let us be honest, are probable there already)

Completely agree. That is the sensible thing to do. My bet is that by the time the Xbone launches in SA, there will be little difference between the two in terms of media capability. Sony is just not pushing the PS4 as a multimedia machine, but the functionality is coming.

I personally feel like there is less of a quantum leap forward this generation than there was in previous generations. PS2 had DVD versus CD , PS3 had Blu-Ray and HD there was always a big wow factor when a new generation came out. The wow factor this gen just seems to be missing.
Kind of like the jump from VHS – DVD was far more compelling than the jump from DVD to Blu-Ray.
8 years since Blu-ray came out you still have video store attendants telling you that you need a Blu-ray player to play it.

I have both the Xbone and PS4. I’m a fan of gaming and could care less of the name. I just want a good quality system.

I’ve had a week and 2 days to play both systems. Here’s what i see

    PS4 –

    Pros
-Powerful piece of hardware with lasting power
    -Gaming is smooth
    -Good control
-Cost- $100 cheaper than xbox one
    – Hard drive space (And the ability to change the Hard drive yourself without voiding warranty)

    Cons
    -Not enough games
    -PSN needs a complete overhaul
-Just like the PS3, weak Wifi
    -Quality of Exclusive Game titles
You can’t multitask (ie. download a game while playing another)

I preordered 3 units. I purchased one for myself and 2 to sell. One of my units was bricked. The other two units functioned properly. I’m now waiting for an exchange that should happen after black Friday.

My house is complete wired for internet access. I rarely have anything that uses my wireless router. (phone and tablet) I had trouble signing on to the network and updating my system. I had the same trouble with my PS3. I see Sony decided not to correct the problem. My unit is wired and runs pretty smoothly. (a problem I never had with Xbox, xbox360 or Xbox one)

PS4 is a nice gaming system. That’s it! a nice gaming system. Nothing more nothing less. I can respect that but if Sony wants to be the gaming console of hardcore gamers, they need to beef up their line up of games and scrap the current PSN. The network is just horrible. It took me nearly 4 hrs. to log into the network and update my system. I never encounter those problems with Xbox live.

    I give the unit a sold B-

    XBOX One

    Pros-
-Powerful piece of hardware with lasting power
    -Gaming is smooth
-Control modifications are a nice touch
-Tv Pass thru is pretty dope
-Xbox Live runs laps around PSN
    -Xbox Smart Glass
    -Extremely Quiet unit
-Voice Control to turn off and on unit
    -Hard drive space

    Cons-
    -Cost $499 is pricey
-Certain features are not available to use at this time ( No Dobly Surround)
-Changing the Hard drive voids system warranty. (that’s just stupid)

Much like the PS4, I preordered 3 units. I am keeping one unit and selling 2. All three units worked perfectly. I left the 3 units running for 12hrs and each unit was cool to the touch and running perfectly.
I’m amazed at how quiet the system plays games. Each unit connected to the Xbox live network flawlessly. Setup up each box took me no more than 10 mins (from unpacking to completing the system update)

After reading about the Xbox gaming requirement to download the game to your hard drive, i was concerned. How long will it take to upload 30G to my hard drive? sheesh. I was pleasantly surprised it took no more than 3 mins to completely upload the game to my hard drive.
The best feature of them all is being able to multi-task. I can download a full game while surfing the web or watching Television. No more waiting 15-20 min. waiting on downloads.
Xbox one does need some software refining. Kinect 2.0 can be amazing if they really take the time to smooth out the software. I do hate the fact MS tries to nickel and dime you at every turn. The fact they would void your system warranty if you do a simple hard drive swap is ridiculous. Of course, they probably want to corner that market and force you to pay $300 for a 1TB hard drive made by Microsoft. With all that said, the Xbox one is an amazing piece of hardware. I think they did a great job blending gaming and entertainment with this console.
A price cut would gain MS some needed positive good will from its customers.
I give the Xbox One a solid A-
