Anita Sarkeesian’s 8 ways to make games more representative

eight

Anita Sarkeesian is the woman angry people who play games love to hate – because she’s out to change the games you play. What she wants, is better representation of women in games, which I think is a noble pursuit – even if I don’t necessarily agree with many of her outcomes. Still, I do agree with her that women are poorly represented in games. In a rather long lecture at New York University, media critic Anita Sarkeesian outlined how that can change.

She outlined “8 things devs can do to make games less shitty for women,” and if you’re interested, there’s a great article on it by Kotaku’s Stephen Totilo. In the comments of that same article, he breaks those 8 things down in to an easily digestible, handy bullet list of points – that I think shows that Sarkeesian isn’t out to ruin your games. I find the distilled list a rather reasonable set of requests, that really wouldn’t be hard to implement, nor would they be of detriment. If anything, they’d lead to games have better, more realistic characters, and be more immersive as a result.

Here’s that list, verbatim.

  • Avoid the Smurfette principle (don’t have just one female character in an ensemble cast, let alone one whose personality is more or less “girl” or “woman.”)
  • “Lingerie is not armor” (Dress female characters as something other than sex objects.)
  • Have female characters of various body types
  • Don’t over-emphasize female characters’ rear ends, not any more than you would the average male character’s.
  • Include more female characters of color.
  • Animate female characters to move the way normal women, soldiers or athletes would move.
  • Record female character voiceover so that pain sounds painful, not orgasmic
  • Include female enemies, but don’t sexualize those enemies

This is more than reasonable – and would be relatively easy for devs other than Ubisoft to implement. Half of those changes should rightly apply to males in games too; I’d love to see more people of colour of both sexes in games, and I’m tired of men almost invariably being great big muscly dudes, or great bulging fat ones for comic effect. People come in all shapes, sizes and colours, and we should be seeing more of that in our games.

All the points are great and I actually agree with many of them. Especially the part about more woman characters and of varying color.

However there is one I’d like to point out is a can of worms:

    “Include female enemies”

This is far too open to having people start shouting about violence against woman. I’d rather not….

Just look at what happened with Tomb Raider… And she was the game’s main character. Imagine you have to go and beat up enemy women.

It’s a path I’d rather see left unexplored. The rest of the points I mostly agree with though.

If juveline males are pleased with your product because a female character is showing off just how sexy she is, surely your product will have a better chance to succeed in this competitive entertainment world we live in? Never understimate the power of your juvenile male audience.

That is all good and well. But what happened to the age old idea of having role models about? The other day I watched Captain America again. Chris Evans went shirtless and I’m sitting there thinking: Wow. That is seriously one good looking torso right there.
Mebbe I should get off my lazy ass and at least TRY and lose some weight.
But… It seems that I should boycott that idea, because you know, Chris Evans is clearly displaying an unhealthy idea of what humanity is all about.
I get there are certain games that push the boundaries of what is acceptable and what is not. Games like DOA comes to mind, though I do believe the idea behind that is to poke fun at our own silliness.
Still, do we get Jack Black to play Captain America? Or do we give our youth some motivation to get up and live a healthy life?

She should make her own gender neutral, multicultural games and use all the billions she makes to promote her cause. Since there is such a big market for gender and culturaly sensitive games it should be a piece of cake to find funding and interested parties. Or maybe she can just take her progressive, left wing feminazism and go hug some trees.

Nobody really wants anyone to make games that are a sort of mollycoddling, wholly gender neutral slant. Even Sarkeesian’s presentation is about making games less shitty for women. Not making games that will drive away men – making games less shitty for women.

More women finding that they’re better represented by games is a good thing; it means more people will buy games. More people buying games, means more games being made.

The industry continues to grow – with games of all sorts. That’s not a bad outcome.

Sex is what sells not censorship, that’s been proven time and again over centuries. Granted there are limits, a porn based game wont sell as well as lara croft, but that level of censorship is market driven and what we have now is where the market is comfortable. Sarkeesians soapbox politics isn’t going to produce or sell more games to anyone. If there is legitimate demand for (less shitty games for women) no dount someone will make them and profit from it.

This is a massive hypocrisy in the feminists arguments, they complain about how women are objectified in games, and when they make games they continue the objectification.

key phrase : “.. to make games more representative”. Developers should always be free to decide whether or not they want their game characters to be representative of the real world. If it doesn’t fit with their creative vision, then they should be allowed to abandon it and go balls-to-the-wall-crazy creating something like Lollipop Chainsaw without feeling bad about it.

Dude, You response bugged me. Let me elaborate on what my thought process is. I heard about this issue in NAG. Naturally, I googled it. In their last few issues, they have seriously being going on and on about gamergate and declaring that they won’t call themselves gamers any longer and to be honest, I just thought they were a bunch of hypocrites as many in Gaming journalism have been. Every year, There are many gaming expos. E3 and Rage are two such examples. When you go to these expo’s you have booth babes. I remember reading the rants in NAG yet they had booth babes at their event. If there is a sincere movement to not objectify woman, Why are there woman dressed in provocative uniforms at their flagship event ? I am fairly certain EA has used booth babes to promote games at E3 Yet they hire this lady as a consultant. Even this website has their ” In other news” section which normally has a picture of a very attractive woman in a Bikini or something. There is no consistency in views when it comes to advertising. So, I repeat what I said. There is no sincerity in the intent or apparent ethics in peoples behavior. If people want to come across as resolute in their new found respect in this matter, It sure ain’t showing.

However, the 2000 upvotes (the number of up votes on such a topic) on the :MagicAmy thing does, from what i can see, mirror similar happenings. male or female, in the world of pro gaming. The fact that several sites, including this one, have articles on it is interesting.

Well, Until it was mentioned, I was oblivious to it. I still firmly believe there is a level of naivety in the world of gaming. People generally only develop a sense of tact and thoughtfulness in life through meaningful experience. Holding a juvenile 16 year old accountable for threats on social media is a parenting issue yet the social reaction to this is overblown by so many factors it renders this debate pointless. Bullying, School shootings, Gangs, Drugs and just dodging all the perils of growing up. I would think that there is also a level of irrational values in the heart of America with their distorted view of the world. Right wing religious zealot bigotry and inbred hatred through political affiliation which creates a natural stigma for anything deemed left wing is probably the most relevant. This debate will always be there. Humanity meeting in the middle is a fairy tale. Yet America is the heart and soul of the creative world.

Even those these demands are less bad than I thought they might be, I don’t know why she’s making demands in the first place. Why the hell does this woman have authority over what devs put in their games? Why does her opinion even matter?

The day devs start taking advice from Sarkeesian is the day I stop playing video games, and its already happening, so this could be the last gen of consoles I buy.

I think this is nonsense. Capitalism should decide what games get made. If you don’t like games with girls in bikini armor, then don’t buy them.

The problem is Anita want’s to decide what games can get made. The effort to effectively ban Hatred by removing it from Steam, was a wake up call. The gaming press fed their readers to Dick Wolf. We need GamerGate to defend Gamers freedom of speech and right to buy.

Hi, I do agree with the some of what you say. But I cannot see why females warriors have super skimpy armour and are top heavy. This, while not in all games and media, is a fairly common image. Even on the covers of some of Terry Pratchett books have that sort of imagery.

I find that a bit pointless. I am going to be told that this imagery appeals to the majority of the games audiences and so forth. And for certain games that is fine, Dead of Alive, for example.

Is that imagery not like having models (mostly female) at car shows? I remember a few years ago, at a car show, my wife, myself and few other men asked the models to remove themselves from the cars, so we could see the car properly. It added nothing for us.

In conclusion, that is my main point of contention with “sexism” in games. Lingerie is certainly not armour.

It’s not just super skimpy armour and top heavy females in games, males are also objectified in many games (muscle bound meat heads). This happens in all media, TV, Film, Books, why is it ok for these formats but not games? Why are game devs being lambasted for their creations but not others? e.g 50 shades of grey.

Like the men in gears if war, that should not even be able to bend arms? Yes. But is that objectifying them in the name of a stereotype or is that perpetuating the stereotype? Some good food for thought. I think I tend, at this moment, to the latter. Is there even a definitively correct, scientific answer? Not sure.

Fair point, and I would tend to agree. Though I cannot remember the last time I saw a man with arms bigger than his legs in RL. The skinny, big boobed, scantily clad woman stereotype is one I see often in RL.

Totally, men are far beyond chisel jawed and ruggedly handsome in games, but not so common in other media.

And there, I think, is the trouble we all have. Hmm. Some good food for thought.

Well, the list is actually quite reasonable. I am surprised, because some of the other stuff I have read and seen from the young lady has, in my opinion, not been so reasonable.

Saying this is “relatively easy to implement” does not sound right to me. Creating a new body type for a MMO is huge, all your clothing items need to get adapted for it, so developers have to make sure said body type will be popular enough among the player base to devote time and resources to create it. In Star Wars MMO I created a “great big muscly dude” and I was surprised at how rare that body type was among the player population. The “great bulging fat ” was even rarer. The well balanced body type was far more popular.

Even if you are talking about single player games, a game like Gears of Wars certainly uses a specific body type for their soldier characters because of an artistic choice. If you included more varied body type among the characters for the sake of them being “realistic” and the world more “immersive”, you would be compromising the artistic vision of the creators. Ever heard of art that does not try to be “realistic”? It is like asking manga/anime artists to include characters with small eyes among their cast. If they like to draw their characters with big, round eyes, why are you asking them to change that?

NO. You don’t get to tell a developer how to make THEIR game. You DO have the option to GTFO and not buy it, however.

I agree that games need to better represent their characters no matter what gender or race/species. But I don’t think that Anita is conveying the message that will reach people. She is looking for “Change” rather than an expansion of ideas. Lets not just stop making games targeted at males, in stead just make more game to contend with them. I don’t believe there is a single thing in this world that sells as much as sex can and has sold. removing it from any industry would do harm to both sides of the argument. Even women like to play games as the pretty boy over the old fat guy. So why the dubble standard agist male targeted products? Wouldn’t this argument from Anita fall flat in a more diverse gaming market? Would anyone notice if the contrast of market target was more balanced at males and females?
I strongly believe we need diversity, not just a blanket change.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with sexualized content, that’s the sex-shaming attitude that has fed into gender inequality. The fault lies in unbalanced sexualization; the preponderance of female sexualization meant to please men. If 50% of all games were Bayonetta and the other 50% a sexy male equivalent there would be no moral problem with sexualization (though it would get a bit old and birth rates might rise).
