Advanced Warfare expected to sell less than previous CoD titles

Say what you will about Call of Duty, but there is no denying that each game sells stupidly well without fail. The franchise has been on a gradual decline though, and that trend may be no different this year. Advanced Warfare is expected to sell less than previous title entries.

This is according to pre-order analysis conducted by Cowen and Company. They expect Advanced Warfare to sell 40% less than Ghosts, and 70% less than Black Ops 2 which was released the year before. The analysis stems from Amazon pre-order figures (Joystiq via GamesIndustry.biz). It echoes similar sentiment from other analysts, who feel the franchise is loosening its grasp on gamers.

NUMBERS

“Advanced Warfare is now pacing almost 40 per cent behind last year’s Ghosts (vs. 50 per cent last week) and almost 70 per cent behind 2012’s Black Ops 2 (vs. 80 per cent last week). We continue to believe CoD will be down meaningfully vs. last year. With the franchise facing two consecutive significant year on year declines in sales, we think it is prudent to assume it has peaked.”

Sounds like doom and gloom, except that even with the predicted sharp decline, Advanced Warfare is still expected topple Destiny. Remember, Destiny is the most pre-ordered game in history.

“Activision’s Destiny continues to track well post-launch, with the game’s Amazon rankings actually up vs. two weeks ago. We think sales are likely to slowdown over the next weeks as a spate of new games hit the market, but we would not be surprised to see a reacceleration in December once the first DLC The Dark Below is released. We continue to expect first year (12-month) unit sales of 12-13MM units. While we now think it is less likely that Destiny will outsell Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, if Destiny enjoys stronger legs and reaches 15MM+ units, we believe it could still happen (due in part to our concerns about CoD).”

I really do think that Advanced Warfare will be a breath of fresh air for the franchise. Remember, all these stats are merely adopted from pre-order figures. If the game is any good, I personally expect its sales to surpass that of Ghosts at least, even if it does take a few months or a year to achieve that.

Well, if you decide to buy your games on Uplay you can rest knowing that the Rand/Euro means you’ll pay even MORE for games.

I don’t quite get it. Games are more expensive on Uplay than they are on Steam, which you still play THROUGH Uplay.
          F*^% logic Ubisoft.

Call of Duty grew every year because of new people joining the franchise. I do believe that number has peaked. Call of Duty doesn’t change. Call of Duty stays the same. New person to the franchise after 2 games realizes that it’s the same shit over and over again and if you not a hardcore mother swearing fan, you tend not to buy the game again or bother with pre-orders.

Now that new consoles has been released. It’s all about new games and new engines. So a game like Call of Duty needs to invest in a brand new engine with all the bells and whistles, to get the old gamers and attract even more new gamers.

Anyway. Fuck Call of Duty. I ain’t buying that shit.

Call of Duty has always been one of the better popcorn single player experiences. Too bad the length of the games is not as impressive…

Edit: Ghosts was bland. So bland…

I will wait for a more official announcement of the length of the single player… But Destiny has showed me that I actually enjoy shooting people online, so might just give COD online a go!!

No. I’ve played Modern Warfare 2 on console and PC and both versions were awesome (Single Player wise)
A friend of mine also played online on both console and PC and she rated PC slightly better in terms of hosting/playing online…

PSN is pretty much dying online every now and then so that doesn’t surprise me much to be honest!! But if the game gets good reviews I will be getting it!!

Just heard that one report, however the SP campaigns for COD have always been the 7 hr or thereabouts mark. See, I don’t really jam online. So SP campaign quality of gamesis very NB to me.

I hear you!! I hope they have made it more than 10 hours!! It looks in die videos as if they have listened to people, so hopefully they heard about the length of the game as well!!

I really feel like COD has tried something new this year so it should sell more than Ghosts. I’m just not that big on PVP. Ask any of the Destiny guys how I bitch and moan. That’s why I’m so disappointed that the SP is still so short.

No Witcher 3 on that list. Checked VGchartz but it’s only for USA pre-orders. 170,417 pre-orders. 87467 for PS4 and 39799 for Xbox One. Yeah Xbox One ain’t going to win in the US of A.

Shame. I used to always be the first to buy any new title that COD brought out. I bought the WWII games in a bargain bin at a flea market, and I enjoyed them. With the Modern Warfare franchise came out, I was hooked! Same with Black Ops. After Black Ops 2, I kind of lost interest due to the new direction they were heading in, but as for any COD game, there is always a storyline that’s interesting, and the playable character/s, even the NPC’s, grows on you, much in the same way that John Marston from Red Dead Redemption did on me.

Yeah Black Ops 2 was last COD I bought… May still pickup Ghosts, but this new COD looks like something out of Halo.
I would like them to stay with Modern Warfare, since its real, and not this futuristic fantasy BS

The people in marketing need a reality check, They need to consolidate the packages and make it simple to understand. They also need to reconsider the way DLC is distributed (i.e. not the day after the game is released.) or it should have been in the game. The pricing of games is getting out of control as is the season pass price (its a game not a life saving device) . To end if anyone looks at the credits for some of these games I am sure the 20 000 or so people listed are not required and would reduce the cost.
