This one stems from a Twitter conversation I had earlier his week. Muslim Ron Perlman affirmed an undying and everlasting love for Assassin’s Creed 2’s Ezio Auditore, proclaiming him to be the best gaming character this generation. I disagreed, saying Mass Effect’s Mordin Solus and Portal’s GLaDOS and Wheatley would take umbrage to that. It spawned a whole long conversation about who the best or most endearing characters in this generation of consoles are.
There is, of course, Far Cry 3’s Vaas, so incredibly portrayed by Michael Mando. Or Handsome Jack and Claptrap from Borderlands. On the subject of Mass Effect, just about the whole cast of characters (Diana Allers excluded) was incredible – with most having fleshed out personalities and feeling like real people.
There’s Dead Rising’s Frank West (who’s covered Wars, you know!), Uncharted’s Nathan Drake and Sully and Red Dead Redemption’s John Marston. And then, there’s Trevor from GTA V.
you tell us though. who do you think the best characters this generation are?

Just about everyone in Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. Favourites : Joker + Catwoman. Mark Hamil is a legend! I’ve got to get my hands on the original animated Batman series. For some reason I always had homework when that came on, or when Bravestarr was on.

I am, so far, not very impressed by the Joker in Arkham Asylum. About 30% in though. So things could change.
But after the film franchise Joker came to life, I feel the old style Joker just doesn’t live up to my expectations.
John's (JJ's) finest excuse

I personally like the Mark Hamil Jokers. It’s not the realistic believable Joker from The Dark Knight, but he’s got his own appeal. Especially liked him in Batman TAS.

Claptrap ftw! And I must agree, Mordin was definitely one of the best, most emotionally involved characters from ME.

Just out of interest, was there a way to not let him die? That sucked, a lot. In one playthrough I warned him, in another I didn’t, but in both he died. 🙁 One of the saddest moments in gaming this last generation.

In ME3 there are two options. You try to stop him by shooting him, but he crawls into the elevator and activates it in any case, or you let him go up. Either way, he dies. Then trick the krogan to think the Genophage is cured. Then Mordin will join the Crucible :P. Just search on google, “Mordin Solus Lives” . Try the female next time. She is a lot more believable in those ‘badass’ moments where the male voice acting and weird dialogue pauses let the moment down.

the acting in the first game was pretty weak, but, first of the series etc, i found the acting segment of the game improved over the years.
I do agree with you that Shepard was good because of the game, but because of that, shepard WAS the game. Shepard wasnt a simple character, shepard was a storyline.
as far as character developement, no other character in any game, ever, has had me so invested. i wanted the best for my Shepard and the best for my team.
SargonTheGreatPandaOfAkkad
November 29, 2013 at 11:43
Shepard was complicated because YOU were complicated. This is why people care about Shepard. Their choices are a reflection of themselves. It’s where Developers got things right. Give us the mould. We’ll shape the Shepard we want.
And it worked. One of the best franchises of all time. Better than watching a multi million dollar movie trilogy.
Spathi
November 29, 2013 at 11:45
You saying I’m shallow huh??!!
I’m joking obviously, I know I am 😛
Edit: Actually, you are quite correct. Like I stated above, I liked playing Shepard. But Shepard was a reflection of me and he did what I wanted him to do (choices etc). I never felt that Shepard was someone I could emphasize with, I was Shepard. This made the game better, but the character weaker. Someone like John Marsten, well I was along for the ride and watched his life and character evolve over time.
Does this mean the Admiral is super vain? 😛

Geralt of Rivia takes top spot for me. I think he is just too badass for words. Reminds me of David Gemell like fantasy characters (very Druss-like).

Kei Lang and Kahlee Sanders were both introduced in the books befor the game.

Handsome Jack and Vaas are in my opinion two of the best characters I have EVER come across. More “alive” than any other characters.
Then there was also Garrus from Mass Effect who I think was pretty close

I mean in this Gen he was, to name but a few: Nathan Drake, Deadpool, Desmond Miles, Superman AND General Zod and “The Boss” aka you in Saints Row IV.
I mean Jebuz, look at this full list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nolan_North#Video_game_roles

November 29, 2013 at 11:53
SHEPARD – Seeing as you can make the character who you want him/her to be.
Other than that, I agree with Mordin being one of the most memorable, but I also think Ezio is a a contender.

For me, I’d have to nominate Garrus from Mass Effect (awesome character and always just wanted to hang out with him in all 3 MEs).
Claptrap needs a mention. And, of course, you gotta nominate Trevor from GTA V… Legendary!
Kromas
November 29, 2013 at 14:04
If there were awards Garrus would not be able to accept his cause he is too busy and you would be disturbing his calibrations. 😛
I would vote Tali cause her story was amazing.
Rock789
November 29, 2013 at 14:14
Indeed he would. 🙂
And yeah, Tali also needs a definite nomination! “Keelah se’lai”
