The Xbox One is “over delivering in value”

Microsoft believes that since they are over delivering in value by such an extent that gamers are going to be flocking to the job centre to earn enough money to buy the most expensive console on the market.

Okay that’s not true but it does bring back some memories of the last console manufacturer who thought that launching a console at the $499 and $599 price tag would be acceptable.

It all ended in tears for Sony until they could release the slim with a large price cut and could eventually start clawing back that massive lead that Microsoft had snatched with their well prices, game loving, Xbox 360.

The latest PR misstep from Microsoft has been committed by Don Mattrick who believes that selling the console for $599 isn’t a ridiculous price point,  stating

“It’s a lower number than some of the analysts had forecasted

“We’re over-delivering value against other choices I think consumers can get. Any modern product these days you look at it [and] $499 isn’t a ridiculous price point. We’re delivering thousands of dollars of value to people, so I think they’re going to love it when they use it.”

I think many people would argue that the Xbox One isn’t filled with thousands of dollars of value and is rather older generation hardware, bundled with a very expensive camera that most of the gamers do not want.

But I do feel for Don and Microsoft a bit. We can all complain about the price of $499 (R5500 – R6000) but that’s less than an iPhone 5, iPad or pretty much all TV’s so it’s not really an expensive piece of tech.

Then again with most of those options you aren’t being asked to fork out over R600 an application and forced to stay online or else everything gets disabled.

From the hands on mini-reviews I’ve seen so far of the Xbox One it really is a solid piece of tech and all Microsoft need to do to make the next generation exciting is drop the online check in option. Just do it Microsoft.

OK Mr. Smarty Pants, please name these “thousands of dollars worth of value adds” that don’t have anything to do with watching TV shows…

Alright… I’ll take this. I have ten friends, we all buy 10 unique games worth $60, and share them with each other. Now according to MS, the original owner and a friend can play the game at the same time. so let’s do the math $600/friend. 10 Friends… Hmmmm… yep math adds up. Oh… and I didn’t have to go to the store or meet up with any of my friends to have access to their library of games…

Those “Thousands” of dollars of value sit in that spy camera and the contracts with Pizza Hut and other shite most gamers never wanted in the first place.

It’s probably an awesome console but their DRM and other anti-consumer policies have tainted the product beyond “give a fuck” status.

Mm, they’re in a bad position right now. There is no way most of their games will release with the same graphical level.

Also, Killer Instinct AND Forza were on Xbox devkits.

Just like you’d guarantee Sony were implementing DRM? Don’t be so cynical.
BTW: Most of the devs confirmed, via twitter, that they were running on actual PS4 hardware/devkits. I say most, because I wasn’t tracking all of them.

It was stated that it was up to the Dev’s to decide how to advertise their wares at E3. Most were apparently using X1 devkits and the one that wasn’t was widely advertised as m$ misleading the public. It seems it doesn’t matter what they do atm, they will be crucified for it.

From his standpoint I can understand why he’s saying the One has thousands of dollars worth of value. TV networks and all this other stuff. Thing is, no one cares though, fine you want to make an all in one box, awesome stuff, but don’t turn a gaming machine in to that….gamers don’t want that.

You still need your cable box/tivo etc, in addition to the console. If it could bypass needing a box at all, I would be closer to agreeing.

For voice-control, or real-time superbru integration? Thing is, if MS introduce these features, you will find TV providers will step up their game and integrate the features anyway (outside of expensive tech like voice and gesture control). I don’t see what features they could implement that would completely alter the way we watch television. The interactive kid’s programs are something, but I just don’t see it being worthwhile. I really see them pushing the interactive TV element. It looks like Quantum Break will largely focus on that.

they see this device having so much features that they view it as value, quantity over quality. non of that matters to gamers, but they are under the assumption that it matters a lot to everyone else. I can’t see the value either

Worryingly, they are selling the console as ‘future-proof’ because of the power of cloud computing – which IS actually limited by a number of factors. Realistically, they could maybe get a 5% performance gain through cloud computing with today’s technology.

I really think they are banking everything on interactive TV. Would you imagine the hype an interactive Halo TV series might generate?

I can get behind that idea, they were supposed to do that with Defiance.

They are betting a lot on the cloud like you say, but I don’t think it’s the time right now, they are to greedy and trying to get a chunk of all different markets…

Perhaps the most concerning thing about the X1 is third party devs confirming that a lot of what we saw at E3 was still not running on X1 devs kits but on Windows 7 based debug machines. With the console launching in less than 6 months time, I sense trouble ahead.

Prices in terms of Xbone / PS4 now and then.

    $500 of 2005 dollars would be worth:$598.80 in 2013

    $400 of 2013 dollars would be worth$334.00 in 2005

When gamers think about value being over-delivered, they think about hardware making the games better. But when Microsoft says that they are over delivering on value, they are talking about Xbox Live. All the ram used to run Xbox Live, in the background while playing games, is going to effect the games in a bad way.

Microsoft doesn’t care about the games and they don’t care about the gamers. All that Microsoft cares about is pimping you Xbox Live accounts. Online DRM and that 24 hour check into Xbox Live feature is not creating value for gamers, it’s about keeping you on Xbox Live so that corporations can sell you shit. Oh Americans can buy pizza from Pizza Hut on Xbox Live, now that’s real value for the games.

On the bright side, I saw some newer footage of the Dashboard running with two tv shows side-by-side. No lag. I think the lag comes in when there is a game running in the bgd. Hopefully they can sort it all out before November.

Honestly, I am a lot more concerned with features than price. I don’t have an internet connection at home and therefore it would not matter to me if the PS4 came in at double the price of
the xbone, I would still be buying it. As things worked out though, I get the
features that I want from my gaming console, and it’s cheaper than the alternative. Bonus
