xbone

As much as I dig the Xbox One, I’ve got to admit that it fell into the Nintendo zone of bad product branding. After all, how could you not see that whole Xbone fiasco popping up? Well consider me amazed, because even Microsoft’s Phil Spencer didn’t see that one coming.

At first, I guess the thing that bugged me the most is I didn’t see it," Spencer said to Gamespot in an interview. "I’d been looking at the name for Xbox One for months, and I wasn’t clever enough to merge them and come up with Xbone.

It didn’t take long for the Xbone moniker to get passed around the internet playground like some sort of child-spawned super flu. Microsoft isn’t too happy with the handle for their next-gen console, and have even gone to great lengths to get the running joke under control.

But Spencer is realistic about the chances of that happening, and admits that the name will be sticking around for the long run:

You know, I think it’s going to stick. I think we can say we don’t like it as much as we want, but it’s a clever use of the name. Probably not the most flattering name, but I think it’s going to be there.

And to be honest, I’d roll with it if I were Microsoft. That’s brand awareness right there man, the kind of publicity that you can’t buy. Throw in a savvy marketing team, and you could probably create a few decent slogans using the Xbone handle.

  1. It can be cool in the sense when you refer to Lazygamer as Lagz or LG. The latter being dismal but not the former.

gives us 2 years to save up for that extra $100 for that piece of crap kinect that no one wants.

Also Ryse on xbox will now only run at 900p as xbox is severly down on power as they proved by over clocking there cpu by 10% creating a new fear over RROD and over heating again.

Also the kinect uses 10% of the cpu, so thats where the 10% went meaning almost no AAA games will be produced that use the kinect.

This whole disrespectful rubbish actually annoys me, we don’t need to respect your product. It’s a freaking product not a person who has achieved something.. so so arrogant

My theory is (and Microsoft has given us a lot of evidence thereof) that socially they’re just a little inept. They’re in the same boat as Blackberry. Blackberry became so arrogant that they merely discounted consumer comments, because after all (and as their CEO candidly admitted in an interview) “They knew better…”.

That has to suck! I still use BB but wish I had an Iphone, the only problem is all the data and the ridiculous prices we pay for it here.

          • Pieter Kruger

            October 4, 2013 at 09:31

Security wise it makes sense for companies! They have complete control over your phone and thus company server access etc. Should you resign, get investigated or your phone get stolen etc. they simply brick it immediately from the BB server! And the free data is also a big bonus!

I have lost all respect for Microsoft’s entertainment division. They cripple your xbox without an XBL subscription, and have totally lost the plot with all this kinect nonsense. All of my xbox friends bought one (we’re such suckers) in the hope that it would be used in hardcore games . Instead, we get voice commands. We could have used a R100 headset for that. Fleeced…

Call me crazy, but if the major selling point of a games console is being able to watch TV, then someone has lost their way. How much more utility does one get out of it, compared to just a) pressing pause and changing the input source on your TV (with a remote) or b) using pic-in-pic.

“640K ought to be enough for anybody.” Gates never said that.

He pushed IBM to up the memory of 16 bit machines as much as possible. IBM then increased the memory from 512K to 640K.
