Ryse: Son of Rome will be more challenging

MASH ALL THE BUTTONS

Back at E3, I got my grubby CHUD hands on Ryse: Son of Rome. Despite looking fantastic, the game garnered a ton of criticism for apparently being a QTE festival. And in a way, it is, but the Crytek game is still brutally satisfying in its own way. And when the final product ships, it’ll be more complex as well.

Speaking to SiliconEra, Crytek producer Michael Read said that the E3 build of the game didn’t reflect the more challenging aspects of Ryse. “What you’re going to see in the final game, you’re going to see various levels of difficulty from easy mode I think up to nightmare. I don’t know if they have decided on that,” Read said.

But, what’s going to change in there is the amount of the damage that enemies is going to do to you and how accurate that you are going to do on blocking. And then of course what ties into that is execution state when you put them into that. Some of the higher archetype guys, I mean they are going to take a lot of hits to put it.

We are going to throw some stupid guys in there, where it’s probably going to take two hits, especially early on in the game to get you used to the control system and how that all works. There’s a lot we should have explained. We didn’t do a good job of doing that.

Read also explained that the game shown at E3 was a simpler version that didn’t throw attendees too deep into the experience, as that would have been “awful”.

A lot of the design elements and balancing weren’t even in there yet. So, to throw those in and here to play the game, I mean, it makes for an awful experience. But I think at the same time, we simplified things a little bit too much but we didn’t do a good job in explaining the combat.

Right now, you play the demo you have X is your hit, Y is your shield bash, A is your block, B will lead you into execution mode. [Pointing to the left triggers] So that’s for your call-outs. This will be like your focus. This [right trigger] is to throw out your pilums.

There are other functions in the general combat you’re going to get into. Pressing X will do your standard swing. Holding X down will do a heavier attack or heavy shield bash, for instance, with the other buttons. You also have shield bash and kick or block and kick.

“When you enter into an execution state, we are going to remove the button prompts that you saw in this version. And they are going to be replaced with visual and audio prompts that people are going to have to learn over time. We have like a hundred executions in the game.

Make no mistake, I genuinely enjoyed playing Ryse: Son of Rome at E3. But it was a simple game to get through once you had the gist of the combat flow down. But if Crytek can make the rest of the game more solid in the gameplay department, we could have a launch title winner here.

At the very least, it’s one of the prettiest next-gen games so far.

I agree, very pretty! Would seem Crytek took a leaf out of MS’s pages and buggered up their launch.

Mashing to Mastery – That quote killed any excitement I might have had for Ryse.

It’s no so much as button mashing in combos, but mastering actual instincts by judging enemies around you and approaching them cautiously, on higher difficulties. As result in why they have 100+ QTEs. It would be ridiculous otherwise if you had combos along with it, but QTEs is the integral part of the gameplay for a “cinematic” gameplay.

Kinda, but I’m not so sure about the QTEs for cinematic gameplay. But ja, I’ll still keep an eye out for the game and how it turns out, I’m just very skeptical currently.

Looks like a glorfied button masher. stringing attacks together useing buttons and then watching will get old fast. I could be wrong but feels like those moments from God of War and then make a whole game like that!

The “content supported by “headers we used during E3 meant that Sony/PS4 had sponsored our E3 coverage.

No; they paid money for extended advertising and theming over the period, which allowed *us* to fund the trip. We’re never directly “sponsored,” so as to avoid any claims of bias or favouritism.

So they changed the Kinect 2 game halfway into production. It shows.
Does that mean that they know that Kinect SUCKS DONKEY DICK?

OK I will use my first post of the day on this one…..
I hated God of War, bought all 3… Played the first one for an hour and went and sold all 3 back to BT Games, taking a R450 bath!! I can’t see the point in QTE, it is probably the worst invention of the last 10 years and yes I included Kinect!!
    There…. I said it!!

Dude!! You had to give it a chance at least 😀

I started at the 3rd one, absolutely loved the game. Played the first one thereafter and although I finished it, it didn’t really do anything for me.

1st one was the best in the series. When I played it back on my PS2 there was nothing else as brutal or satisfying when it came to dispatching multiple enemies. I got bored playing the 2nd and 3rd in the series though as they had very little to offer in originality.
I’m going to assume that you must have played and enjoyed Darksiders or some such title with similar mechanics to God of War to have not enjoyed it.

Meh! Still not impressed. It’s sad really because I get a stirring in my nether regions for anything and everything Roman-related. Ask me anything about Rome, and I will dazzle you with my knowledge…. They don’t call me Ceasar Banana for no reason!

QTE’s can be a good thing if used properly…If abused like pitch control on vocals in contemporary music these days then no… But used sparingly can make for some exciting scenes…

Darryn, please do an article on the fall of LAN events in South Africa. Apart from rAge (which always does great) many big monthly LAN events such as Liberty LAN, MPLD and many other smaller LANs have slowly been forced to rethink whether or not its worth it to host these monthly LAN events due to the sharp decline in interest/attendance. This is quite sad from a gamer perspective, as LANs are awesome social events that formed a great part of our gaming lives for us older gamers. Is the much improved Internet availability nowadays the main culprit for the fall of our beloved LANs? Would be great to see an article on this and hear the comments from some of the seasoned gamers among us

      Nise, Tero.
I remember going to Liberty LAN and standing in moerse queues just to get in. Now these once great LANs are desolate, the introduction of uncapped, highspeed ADSL as well as the new games not really catering for LAN multiplayer, have killed LANs. I miss the days where we’d stay up thru the night, sitting in our sleeping bags, leeching on DC++ and playing CS Source and the like.
Really nostalgic post, but I do not care. Gri pul, gri pul.
