Despite not being able to rope in Epic Games, Microsoft and their own studio, Black Tusk, are hard at work on the next installment of the Gears of War franchise. We’ve known that for a while, and yet Black Tusk are playing their cards extremely close to the chest. So while we still won’t get our first look at Gears of War today, it seems like it’s making good progress.

Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, visited the Black Tusk offices to see how well the sequel was coming along. Based on his response over Twitter afterwards, it seems like they’re not only on the right track, but making fast progress on the title.

This was later echoed by studio head Rod Fergusson, who seemed happy with what his team had to show off to the boss yesterday.

Still, we have no idea what direction Black Tusk is taking the Xbox’s beloved franchise. I still dream of a Gear game where we get to explore the Pendulum Wars that took place before the events of the first trilogy. Only issue with that is the exclusion of the series’ infamous Locust enemies, which would definitely strip away a core Gears of War element.

Still, the conclusion to Gears of War 3 didn’t leave much to go on, so I’m beyond excited to see how Black Task is tacking the gritty lore that the series has. I’m also holding out on some sliver of hope that Microsoft will have a surprise announcement at the Video Game Awards tomorrow night. I can dream, right?

Personally I can’t see why they can’t do a story of before the pendulam wars while still having locusts.. On Ermergence day all the locusts er emerged.. but they existed before that and they had to have done some small attempts to gauge the enemy.

I could well buy into a story of the locusts attacking an outlyng city first to test the defences and your main job is to get communication back up and running to warn the rest of the colonies.. planet.. whatever

For most of the world, when someone talks about Xbox people think of Halo. For me, it’s Gears. It’s the reason I bought my 360. Can’t wait to see what the new one will be about.

It is the one franchise I miss after selling my 360 , and I still feel a small void in my current game selection.

Gears of War 1 still one of my favourites. But Gears 2 and 3. Nope. They can stop making Gears already. Hell even Epic stopped that train. Just create a new IP games. It will make everyone happy. Xbox 360 Gears of War wow. Xbox One still Gears of War, fuck off.

Actually they were working on a brand new IP, then Microsoft bought Gears and gave it to Balck Tusk effectively killing the other project. Why would you ever want to create new IP’s when you can rehash the same think over and over. Just ask Ubisoft. Assassins Creed, Watchdogs and Far Cry all have the exact same formula.

Is that why I never bought Ass Creed since the 1st game, never bought Watch Dogs, never bought Far Cry since number 2.

Gamers want to buy and play video games. If there are only the same shit made available then that’s all gamers are going to buy.

I guess I’m not a gamer anymore because The Witcher 3 is coming and I am happy to wait.

Agreed. Existing IP’s can expand on the game’s universe rather than canning what has already being created.
