It seems that no matter what Microsoft has done, it hasn’t been able to please the masses. Even after the 180 on DRM, people petition to get features back. One of them is Family Sharing, which may yet make a come back.
In an interview with IGN, Marc Whitten (Xbox One chief product officer) responded to the fan petition asking for another 180, particularly the part about Family Sharing:
“If it’s something that people are really excited about and want, we’re going to make sure that we find the right way to bring it back.”
He admits that communication surrounding the Xbox One features and changes were not clearly communicated. In fact, it seems that the customer-oriented approach of Larson-Green is already in effect:
One of the things I think we learned was that we didn’t talk enough, and we were incomplete in a lot of how using the system would work. Because we weren’t participating in the conversation in a deep enough way, it got us sort of off cycle about how we talk about our program. I think we’ve learned a lot of lessons. And I think it’s something that you’re going to see a lot more from us, frankly, is engaging more with the community. I think it’s the number one thing I’d want to do if I went back, was have the conversation more open and more complete.
I definitely think that more open communication would be a really good thing – there are features we want that we aren’t even aware will exist! Access to the digital library is still a thing on the Xbox One. Joe DiMerio of the Xbox PR team told us:
“As we previously announced, consumers will be able to sign on to any Xbox One console and have access to all their digital games. Once the required data –a fraction of the entire game – is on their hard drive, they can jump into the action while the rest of the game finishes downloading in the background. And of course, on Xbox 360, consumers today can download their digital games on any console after signing in to their Xbox Live account.”
So, really, the features are still there on the Xbox One. You can play your games at a friend’s house using the cloud, and (like the PS4), you can start playing before the game has fully downloaded. Even if the family share feature isn’t there at launch, Microsoft will probably add it back onto the console. Things are starting to shape up for Microsoft – nice to be hearing some good news.
Now, if only they could respond to all of us in the tin foil hat brigade regarding the Kinect…

Why did it take them so long to rectify their first statements?
First they say that the digital cloud game library will not be accessible everywhere anymore and now suddenly it is.
Either they did another 180 on one of their choices or there is a broken telephone effect happening somewhere within the company.
Either way, really glad that the digital library access is still a thing. This is a big thing for a lot of gamers and would have been sad to see it go away.

Well I think when they talked about it the first time they meant they couldn’t, now they’ve changed because they figured out a way to do it.
They should just go away for a week, finalise what they want to do & can do, then come back & tell people. Mixed messages don’t inspire confidence.
Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew
July 16, 2013 at 10:54
Agreed. They need to get a fact sheet up of exactly what it will and won’t do at launch and then pretty much re-launch the device with a press conference or something. But they need to get the facts out before there is any more confusion and damage to the device

If MS add a decent reward type program like PS+ has, I will be going the Xbox One route over the PS4. As far as I’m concerned, that is the only area Sony still has me sitting on the fence in. The Kinect side doesn’t bother me. Our Kinect still comes out about twice a month at parties. Its always a great blast, and the friends love it. And it works brilliantly in Skyrim, so the hardcore potential is still there in my eyes.

July 16, 2013 at 11:04
They’ll never drop Kinect as they have too much invested in it and apparently it costs just as much as the console to make! I also love playing some darts on the Kinect while having a some friends over for a braai and it can keep the children busy for days! Kinect has so much potential, the dumbass overpaid developers complaining not knowing what to do with it just need to start earning their money and use it properly! Seems like BF4 (with voice commands and hopefully throwing of grenades -please please please!!!) and Dead Rising 3 (where you can push off Zombies by gently flicking your controller) have the right idea about integrating Kinect into mainstream games!

Microsoft needs to take a step back, take a breather and reformulate their plans. They’re constantly reacting, and it exposes them for being blatantly unprepared for next gen. My current theory is that they didn’t expect Sony to be releasing the PS4 this year, and it’s meant panic in the offices at MS. It explains why they fumbled so badly the last few months, and why we’ve had mixed messages from the suits, including good ol’ Major Nelson.
What they should be doing is listening, get a feel for what people want from a new xbox and stop listening to the suits about TV, TV, TV, COD, COD, Watercooler.

I agree, Skype isn’t a selling point. It’s an awesome service but they can’t sell the console on it. Same with the setup box functions. Ironically, if they had downplayed that part of the xbone, it would have gone viral on its own. Gamers would have gone, “wait… I love netflix, and I can do what with my xbox one? Seriously, I can watch TV and play games.. sWWWEETTT!”.
Instead it became a joke… A pity really…
