Metro: Redux redefines what a remaster should be

If you had to ask me what my favourite shooter franchise is, I’m pretty sure Metro would fall somewhere in the top three. The atmospheric shooter set in post-apocalyptic Russia is renowned for it’s gritty realism, tough as nails difficulty and all round uniqueness. Metro: Redux, the next-gen remaster, is making both titles better in more than a few ways.

We’re used to remasters just beefing up the visuals, pushing out more frames and increasing the resolution. That’s what most people expect nowadays, but developer 4A weren’t content on just re-releasing the same experience. Metro 2033 is an old game, with Last Light improving on not only its visuals but also gameplay. That’s why Metro: Redux will feature Metro 2033 remastered entirely on the Last Light engine.

This means much, much better visuals, advanced AI and new stealth gameplay that was previously never in the title. The engine itself has had some tweaks made, which means Last Light is even more stunning than when it first released. But don’t take my word for it, just check out the comparisons in the video below.

There’s been some issues with fans who have already purchased the original titles, with some claiming that they should get the remastered versions for free. 4A Games responded to this with a lengthy statement, in which they described how they’ve been working on Redux for over a year now.

“Almost the entire team of around 80 people at 4A Games will have been working on the Metro Redux titles for almost a year by the time we release next month. It has been a substantial project for the studio, with three main elements.”

4A Games went on to say that a 50% discount for those who own the original titles is more than fair for the amount of work that was required to produce Redux. I can definitely agree with that, especially since Redux is already offering both Metro titles at a lower price. Having half of that knocked off is something fans of the series shouldn’t lift their noses to.

Metro: Redux will run at a solid 60 FPS on next-gen consoles, while supporting 4K resolutions on PC. The remaster will also include all DLC and new game modes. It’s out on August 29th.

  1. Interesting console native resolution now triple what it was and not 1080p.

Metro: Last year’s bite was an awesome game. Loved it so damn much.

You know with that 50% discount I really think that people should not complain. You can see that a lot of work went into this. I agree that this is how a remastering should really be done.

Re-playability is almost 0. I can’t see myself buying this.

You can attempt the alternate (good) ending in Metro 2033. But I read through it and it sounds like a metric fuckton of effort.

No not at all man. I did it extremely easily. You don’t have to be perfect, just do as much as you can. The hardest parts is not killing enemies, but since 2033 will have last lights gameplay, that will be so much easier now.

Believe me, it’s not hard, and it’s even easier now that 2033 has last lights gameplay

I suppose it won’t be that hard. Actually not killing enemies was easy for me, I think I killed maybe less than 5 human enemies, just sneaking through everywehere! But yeah, I stil probably wont do it, too many other games that want my attention!

Very nice achievement, but having played both games on a ‘high end pc’ I cannot see myself dropping money on this again.

I might do so at some future steam sale and when the memory of both games have faded enough, but not this soon.
