What’s the most played game on Xbox Live?

Every week, Xbox Live’s Major Nelson posts up a list of the most popular games on Xbox Live for that week. For the last few years, you could put money on the fact that the latest Call of Duty would be at number one. It’s not anymore.

That accolade, for the past week, at least, goes to none other than Minecraft – Mojang’s digital version of LEGO – for the Xbox 360. That’s quite a damned achievement for a niche, indie title, knocking Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 off its perch.

It’s yet another feather in the cap for Minecraft. Earlier this month, 4J Studios – handling the Xbox 360 port for Mojang -  announced it’s sold over four million copies. making it the best-selling XBLA game ever.

Here’s the chart :

  • 1. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition
  • 2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
  • 3. EA Sports FIFA Soccer 13
  • 4. Call of Duty: Black Ops
  • 5. Borderlands 2
  • 6. Halo: Reach
  • 7. Battlefield 3
  • 8. Modern Warfare 2
  • 9. Madden NFL 13
  • 10. NBA 2K13
  • 11. Happy Wars
  • 12. Skyrim
  • 13. Gears of War 3
  • 15. GTA IV
  • 16. FIFA 12
  • 17. Forza Motorsport 4
  • 18. Dishonored
  • 19. EA SPORTS NHL13
  • 20. Halo 3

Why do you think this is?

Are gamers’ tastes changing? Have people finally grown tired of damned modern combat shooters? will Minecraft manage to stay there, with the impending releases of both Halo 4 and Black Ops 2? Probably not – but it’s nice while it lasts.

I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces. I am also the emperor of the backend
