Xbox One beats out PS4 again

Just before the launch of the Xbox One S, Microsoft has been enjoying a stint of dominance on the console market space. It’s claimed top spot in NPD sales figures for console hardware for now the third month running, beating out the PlayStation 4 in September sales. That’s a pretty big deal for a console that was so obviously outdone by the PS4 in the years prior, and Microsoft isn’t letting it lie.

Although the results haven’t been publically released yet, Microsoft have released a statement claiming that they have topped the charts for the third month running in both the U.S and U.K. It’s a victory off the rousing success that the Xbox One S has seem, reigniting Xbox One sales in multiple markets. It also shows that either people who still need a current-gen console are choosing the Xbox One instead, or simply already have a PS4 purchased.

PlayStation VR could be factoring in this heavily too, with multiple consumers perhaps already gears for Sony’s headset and in no need of a PS4. Sony isn’t likely expecting PSVR to spur on PS4 sales (the combination of both is the hardest sell possible), but it will be a hardware figure to keep an eye on now that it has launched in many major markets.

Another factor is the incoming PS4 Pro. The PS4 Slim launched n markets last month and surprising still hasn’t managed to take away the sales crown from Microsoft, but it could be the PS4 Pro that is preventing that. Despite some of the backlash, it’s likely that many probably PS4 consumers are waiting for the more powerful console next month, with November being the real test for Microsoft. If the Xbox One can maintain its dominance there, it bodes well for Microsoft going into the new year.

It also offers them a little insight into how they might approach their own new console launch at the end of next year, perhaps learning for some of Sony’s missteps if they occur. Either way, Microsoft is enjoying their time on the top.

Here’s what Microsoft told Gamesbeat:

“Thanks to our fans, Xbox One was the best-selling console in September in the U.S. for the third month in a row according to NPD Group as well as the best-selling console in September in the U.K. according to GfK Entertainment UK. In addition, Xbox One was the only gen eight console to see year-over-year growth in September in the U.S., Australia, the U.K., and many other countries worldwide. This success was driven by our fans and their support for Xbox One S, which is the only console available this holiday with built-in UHD 4K Blu-ray, 4K video streaming and HDR for gaming and video.

We received an incredible response to Forza Horizon 3, the No. 1 first-party title for September in the U.S., Australia, and U.K. according to NPD Group and GfK Entertainment UK. Global engagement on Xbox Live – the fastest, most reliable gaming network – continues to grow and the number of unique multiplayer users increased 57 percent year-over-year. With the blockbuster launch of Gears of War 4 for Xbox One and Windows 10 this week and the upcoming release of Clubs and Looking for Group on Xbox Live alongside the launches of Dead Rising 4, Battlefield 1, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Dishonored 2, Final Fantasy XV, Titanfall 2, and Watch Dogs 2 in the coming months, Xbox is the best place to game this holiday.”

Last console I bought was a PS3 and basically because I wanted to play one single game.

I gave it to my brother soon after.

PC gaming ruined all consoles for me.

While I don’t agree personally with the last 2, that’s an amazing list there.

            Sorry consoles.

Although Final Fantasy, TLOU, Journey, Forza, Horizon Zero Dawn (or whatever).

            Yeah I want consoles too.

Fallout looks and plays better on PC and ofc Modding.

Witcher has always looked better on PC and ofc Enhanced Edition upgrades for both 1 and 2 were a PC thing.

TLOU was the only consoles game ever to make me buy a console.

I wasn’t disputing whether or not they were better on PC. I just don’t like either of those games, at all.

Ah … .well to be fair I did not finish W3 and Fallout 4 cause I got bored.

But then again I got openworld fatigue. Sandbox is still fine though but openworld I am pretty much over with.

Skyrim and Witcher were AWESOME on console.

AND I went console because of LIFE, switch on, play. That is all I wanted. I do not to install drivers, keep up to date, find a virus from a memory stick or any crap like that. LIFE made that choice for me.

Last console I bought was the Xbox 360. My PC was dead at the time, and it cost me less to buy a console (at the time) than fix my PC.

The biggest thing putting me off consoles is the price of games. R900+ for a new game is absurd.

And they were fun. You know. That thing that is the basis for us playing games in the first place.

Also they lasted longer than 5 hours. (I’m looking at YOU Gears of War)

            October 14, 2016 at 09:37

I finished the first game in 5 hours. The final boss fight felt like the first real boss fight. Like the end of chapter 1.

I was rather annoyed to find that that was it. I Bought GoW1, played it, finished it, and returned it, all in 1 day. That’s worse than CoD.

          • Pieter Kruger

            October 14, 2016 at 09:48

You bought Gears & COD only for the SP?!!????

          • Pariah ???

            October 14, 2016 at 09:52

Yes. Because if I wanted multiplayer, I’d have bought something for the PC. And CoD1 was epic single player. No other CoD has come close since. CoD 1 puts Gears to shame on so many levels.

But anyway. My Xbox 360 has to this day never connected to the internet. I bought the console expecting offline single player games. Every game I bought for it promised exactly that. Gears was one of the very few that delivered on nothing that it (or the hype from fan boys such as yourself) had claimed.

But they also had a sci fi game that had a 90% terrible review (and crashed the industry at the time).

I would love to see a NMS landfill next to the ET one. 😛

True, but it’s still Hip to diss MS. I like Reddit because it’s gamers talking about games, not bias bait clicking hipsters! XBox One has so much to offer but sadly you won’t hear a peep from those sites about the 100’s of Universal Apps, Clubs, latest B.C. Games etc etc. They’d rather stream gameplay from a year old game……LOL!

The Xbone has some amazing features that are way better than PS4 I will admit but they have increased their game prices and the windows store is a mess and most of those features are on PC since before the Ice Age. Basically if I ever would buy a console for consoles sake it would be an Xbone but then again I probably won’t.

My favourite complaints are when SP centric games like Halo, QB and Gears 4 are getting slammed for not being RPG enough lol. It’s all about keeping up with Metacritic these days and Opencritic doesn’t help either. I’d rather find my way through user-opinion on forums and social media and stick to that one review site that’s not affiliated with to any review aggregate site.

You have to admit that with cross-platform play an Xbox One is a less attractive purchase if you have a half-decent PC and any Xbox controller. I’m saying this as an Xbox One owner. MS are getting a lot of things right now and I hope the trend continues.
