Work Avoidance: Magic Cat Academy

It’s Halloween today, so naturally, I’ve chosen a game for Work Avoidance that celebrates the spooky holiday. Magic Cat Academy, a Google Doodle title (via Destructoid), is far from horrifying however. What it lacks in jump scares though, it makes up with in pure cuteness. Here’s its premise:

This year’s Halloween Doodle follows freshman feline Momo on her mission to rescue her school of magic. Help her cast out mischievous spirits by swiping in the shape of the symbols above the ghosts’ heads. And you’d better pounce fast—the ghost that stole the master spellbook is getting away!

The game includes five levels set in a school environment: the library, cafeteria, classroom, gym, and the building’s rooftop. We had lots of fun ideas for the resident foe of each level, including a chef ghost, a venn diagram ghost, and a big whistle ghost that summons other spirits.

Gameplay in Magic Cat Academy is pretty straight forward. Using your mouse, you need to mimic the symbol seen above a ghost’s head to defeat it. The shapes start out simple enough, you know, a dash, or the shape of a V, but as you progress through the levels, they tend to get a little bit more complicated. That, and the number of ghosts that approach you at any given time increases too.

Sometimes, mini bosses of sorts appear. Instead of having just one symbol above their heads however, they have a whole series. In order to defeat them, you need to mimic them all, and damn quickly too, lest that get close enough to sap some of your health.

I’ve only played through the first two levels of Magic Cat Academy myself (I do actually have to work to do you know), and I already love it. The adorable animations, music, combos, and more, makes for one addictive little distraction! I would totally throw money at this and play it even more if it was ported to mobile (hey developers, please do that). Here’s hoping that happens at some stage, with more than five levels to boot.
