Turtle Rock is teasing something Evolve related

Evolve, despite the heaps of praise that critics the world over (including us!) piled on it, was a bit of a downer. Though it wasn’t wholly unsuccessful, reports suggest it tapered out with sales caped off at around 2.5 million copies.

The thing is, in concept, Evolve was brilliant. The idea of one person playing as essentially a boss character, going up against 4 people working together to bring it down works incredibly well in the right setting. The execution was significantly less dazzling.

The game required the right chemistry between teammates for it to come together and feel like a good experience – something that happened far less in the wild than Turtle Rock, 2K and 2.5 million disappointed gamers would have liked. Here’s what we said in our review:

“Under ideal circumstances, Evolve is an absolutely fantastic game. It’s fun, it’s unique and it allows a wonderful combination of cooperative and competitive multiplayer all in one package. Unfortunately, we don’t live in a world of ideal circumstances. All it takes is for one player to not be working well as part of the team and the whole thing falls apart.

And even if everyone plays well together, I’m just not sure how long that excitement will be maintained – how many times can you kill the monster (or be killed by the monster) before you’re over it? I worry that Evolve simply won’t have the longevity people are hoping for. Turtle Rock gave us a beautiful gem of a game, but they simply didn’t count on the reality of most gamers. If even the smallest element doesn’t align well, Evolve becomes an un-evolved mess.”

It looks like Evolve may, well, be evolving. Turtle Rock is teasing some sort of evolution of the game – perhaps hinting at an unlikely sequel, or some big changes coming to the core game. The official Evolve site is now counting down to…something. There’s little other than the timer and a hashtag: #StageUp.

I really think Evolve could and would have fared better if it wasn’t such a DLC pit, if it wasn’t such a grind to unlock characters and if it didn’t require you to play with nice people (rare as they are on the internet). If Turtle Rock can do that for a sequel or evolution of the game, then it may be worth visiting.

I thoroughly enjoyed our internal company Evolve games… but that was literally the last time I tried it.. couldn’t be arsed to try again.

But recently the game has been selling for as little as R50 ($3) so I’m placing my bets on it becoming free with micro transactions for skins and crap

The absolute most you can spend on evolve is about $220 if you buy every single skin in the most inefficient way possible (buying skins individually instead of in discounted bundles)
Note that is both including the base game and gameplay effecting content while almost all of that number is cosmetics.

If you only include the base game and gameplay effecting dlc without cosmetics, it costs at most $60. Thats evolve and its two character packs.

In South Africa we have the Rand, which is pretty much down the crapper at this point. So $220 is R3 190.00 here which is a lot of money.

The cosmetics thankfully don’t have any effect on gameplay and as a result are completely optional and dont really take away from the experience.

As an upside, while the most you can spend on the game without cosmetics would be $60 for the ultimate edition (thats the base game with character packs one and two,the only gameplay effecting flc)
But due to price drops at some retailers you can get a new copy of ultimate edition for as low as $20. That would be one of the most affordable offers out there.

155 player peak worldwide a year and a bit after release.

They are getting a surprise if they think any of their next products will sell anywhere as well. They burned their player base with the half asses game and their DLC practices. R3200 for the game and all the DLC’s …

This was a free to play title at best

What Evolve needs is a Warframe community.

Also, what Geoff said, is very true “I really think Evolve could and would have fared better if it wasn’t such a DLC pit, if it wasn’t such a grind to unlock characters “

It isn’t. You play one character from a Hunter tier for a game or two and you unlock the next tier of hunters. Within 10 hours, you unlocked all the hunters from the base game, and this is just for messing around a bit.

Hopefully Turtle Rock will evolve into something stronger… Like a Wartortle… or maybe even a Blastoise.
Really hope this new game of them won’t be riddled with DLC and exclusive platform releases.

I hope they know that a sequel will fail due to the bad reception of the original. Now if they somehow do something amazing with that … who knows.

    The freequal cometh!

To clarify what the countdown is for, Turtle rock studios has spent the last eight months or so working crunch time in order to tear evolve apart and build it back from the ground up again better than ever. With this new to be announced freequal, the game will finally be devoid of all problems people had with the game at launch (running simulator, balance issues, not enough base game content, bugs).

It will also include massive quantities of new free content as well as large improvements, revision, and addition to evolves core gameplay.

Going forward, the devs plan on regularly adding many new charactors, gamemodes, maps, and other content to the game as completely Free additions to the game for as long as there is a playerbase.

If anyone has any questions or comments about these things feel free to pm and talk to any of the devs over at the Turtle Rock Studios forum.

Log for this new “freequal” of the game compiled over the past several

They burned everyone the first time round. They need to pull a beer spewing, money dispensing unicorn out of their asses for anything else Evolve related. I honestly dont think the community at large even cares anymore. Especially if there is a retail price tag attached to it.

I’m part of the community and I am excited. Don’t see your point. The countdown is mostly for the huge free update they are doing. Also, did you know that they released at least 4 free hunters and 2 monsters (that arent part of any DLC).

Fair enough, and I’m not saying the entire community, merely a large portion of it.
Purely based on the amount of people actually playing the game I think it’s fair enough to say that only a very small part of the community actually still care. If you do, good on you and I hope you enjoy it, but I bought the game on special for incredibly cheap and I was still horribly dissapointed. Especially seeing as Evolve was the game I was most keen for the year it was released.

So good on them for releasing this apparently huge update, but I think it’s just too little, too late.

So, despite their good actions, does that mean you won’t give the game a second chance? If anything, the fact that they kept working on it since launch (something you don’t see any developer do) deserves some recognition.

Not only that, they announced Evolve F2P on PC as a Beta. Meaning they understand people’s complaint and want to continue working on the game as an on-going project.

There are lots of devs that work on their games after launch, both Multiplayer and SP titles. CD Projekt Red as an example, even MASSIVE with the Division. Bungie with Destiny and Almighty Blizzard with Diablo 3. So that part of your argument is a tad flawed my friend.

They are only announcing F2P now because the money has stopped too. Even retailers have drastically dropped the pricing on their boxed copies just to try and move the stock. Whats a better way to generate more revenue in a potentially near-dead game (and the steam statistics will back up this statement.)? Make it F2P, unlock everything gameplay related previously locked behind a paid DLC wall and then start churning out cosmetics and Micro transactions.

What about the people who paid for the game? Give them some weak “founder status” title and a free skin or two? Yeah, I’m definitely going to re-install Evolve now because I have no other better games around to play.

Actually, they have already said that, if you own characters you will insta-unlock, even when they release the variations for those characters, while others will have to grind for it
