Star Citizen is the “best damn everything sim”

Star Citizen is a frightfully ambitious game. It’s also one that seems to be growing in scope and ambition as it either becomes the greatest game ever, or succumbs to feature creep – depending on who you talk to. While many had lost hope in the game (and all of that ambition) ever coming to a fruition, a video released to coincide with Gamescom showed some incredible progress. It looks incredible, and the stream showed exactly why Star Citizen is the most anticipated game of 2031.

Take a look:

For a long time, Cloud Imperium Games’ Chris Roberts called Star Citizen “the best damn space sim.” In an extensive (and worthwhile) interview with Gamers Nexus, Roberts said the game is now the best damned everything sim.

“Right. It’s not even ‘best damn space sim’ anymore, it’s ‘best damn everything sim.’ Especially with the way the procedural planets […] we were able to do that with everyone’s support, which allowed us to open up the Frankfurt office and hire up people that are incredibly talented […] That’s the iterative way that Star Citizen works, because I wasn’t thinking we were going to be able to do what we are going to be able to do now, but the additional play possibilities that come with it and what players will be able to do by themselves, it’s really exciting.

You’ve opened up a much bigger palette of things you can do because you have planetary locations, you can do things, recover things, rescue people, create your own little place – whatever you want to do. Whereas before, we were more limited to space and landing areas that were just a certain area, so it’s – from a game designer standpoint, someone making games – it’s super, super, super exciting, because it means the world is going to feel bigger and more alive.”

Since its reveal, Star Citizen has grown from being a space sim with a persistent universe, to a full on first person shooter with intricate weather systems. The way it’s going it’ll soon be a general life simulator. But when will it be an actual game? Right now, even for those with access to its systems and modules, it doesn’t really feel like a game.

Alpha 3.0 – showcased above – will be the first steps towards star Citizen looking and feeling like a game. It’s expected to go live to backers by the end of 2016.

“3.0 is the first time you can say that, when you get out there and fly around, it will feel like a full game, or a complete game, because you’ll be able to go between locations, buy and sell stuff, earn money, do all the things you normally would do in something like a Privateer or a Freelancer. That’s the first step to the Persistent Universe getting fully fleshed-out. There’s a lot more to be done — locations, worlds, systems, additional professions.”

If you’re interested in more Star Citizen, Kotaku UK has a really, really incredible look at the game’s troubled and storied development.

I hope for the sake of gaming that this is not a scam.
    Its history is shady.

It may be a failure, but I’m not sure how anyone can still think it is a scam. The game is in active development and thousands of people are actively playing parts of the game in development. If it is a scam, it’s the worst scam ever because they are actually using backer funds for development.

I don’t agree that it has been shady, they have been very open during the entire development. They have run into delays, but if you weren’t prepared for that when you backed the project you were being naive.

The history is very shady, but there is an alpha available to backers (Which I’ve participated in), and we get to try features as they’re released.

SC has nothing in common with NMS. NMS was made by people that made Joe Danger before. They just stole the gameplay of Out There Omega and slapped a broken buggy procedural planet generator on top. And they showcased one single hand crafted planet beforehand accompanied by blatant lies of the developer.

SC is still WIP and shaping up nicely before everyone’s eyes. And additionally made by people with tremendous experience in making games.

I did not once say that they have anything in common. Neither did I say anything bad about SC. I just meant recent games with a lot of hype that turned out to be something other than what was expected. 🙂
I am really looking forward to seeing this, it’s very high on my list and from what we’ve seen it is looking great.

Agreed, overhyping is bad. But… NMS was certainly not overhyped, it was plainly just false advertising, just as its ‘screenshots’ that are still in most stores. Hopefully not for much longer.

You forgot that the game comes in two parts. A single player focused Squadron 42 for 2016. The Open Persistent Universe MMO in 2018. Though for the backers there will be tons more to do and play with now as the Persistent Universe expands.

It should be impressive. Destiny’s development budget was a massive investment of a little over $500 MILLION. That’s 5x the budget of Star Citizen. That’s not counting that Bungie was already an established studio, with the backing of publishing giant, Activision, giving Bungie all the resources they could ever want.

What came out of that? A sorry excuse for a game. a first person shooter, not much different than halo itself. It’s not an MMO, the instances are way too small for that. all the areas are open world themed, but are really just over-sized open instance dungeons. They are all repetitive and low in number. I think there are like 12?

$500 million is the largest budget ever used for the development of a game. That is just sad. For all their expansions, you cant even fly your ship in space. It’s just for show. Earth is this single, tiny tower with a few rooms in it. ridiculous. Sure, it looks big, but its not. You cant go anywhere but a handful of rooms. Considering the budget used was the largest in gaming history, Destiny is the most pathetic excuse of a game I’ve ever played/seen/experienced. AND its a huge waste of money.

Star Citizen and its developers, with all their long, unrelenting efforts refuse to downgrade their scale. They refuse to give in for a lesser product, they refuse to be the catastrophe that is Destiny or No Man’s Sky. They will not settle, or waver for anything less than the ultimate game. The one we’ve all been dreaming about for decades. It’s coming. Slowly, yet persistently, I know RSI will bring us the gaming title of the century.

I’ve been a backer for almost two years now. Every now and then (especially after big updates), I log in and spend a considerable amount of time in the game. It’s really remarkable what they’ve already achieved. Looking forward to the final release (or at the very least Squadron 42 – which is the ‘campaign’ part, as well as Star Marine – the ‘competitive FPS’ part).
