The last guardian opening 2

The Last Guardian was announced all the way back in 2007, then taking the form of a would be PS3 exclusive that had fans of Team Ico rushing out to buy the overpriced console. It’s a game that would appear and disappear from public eye in the months that followed, with stories of its troubled development and near cancellation building a myth around a game that didn’t yet exist. It took a long time, but The Last Guardian resurfaced last year at E3. And in a few days, it’ll be in the hands of avid fans everywhere.

If you’ve been waiting since day one, this likely isn’t for you. Or maybe it is. Maybe you’ve waited so long that spoiling the opening moments of the game is just what you need to get you over that hill of anticipation. Either way, it’s a typically stunning opening from Ico and Co, who are masters at creating an engrossing atmosphere to get lost in.

The Last Guardian looks like a typically exciting puzzle platformer, as you take control of boy and his pet Griffon (sort of) named Trico (who is totally just a cat with feathers). The story is essentially a series of flashbacks told by the boy many years later, recounting an adventure that looks to take place almost exclusively in some stunning ruins. There’s certainly elements from both Shadow of the Colossus and Ico at play here, but with such a long time in development it’ll be interesting to unravel the many layers that The Last Guardian hopefully has.

We’ll know in just a few days time though, as The Last Guardian becomes the second game of legend in just as many weeks to finally hit shelves. An exciting time for fans, and I can only hope the game delivers in spades after all this time.

My cat had feathers this weekend, though they were technically from a dove she caught.
