angels

As with just about every hugely anticipated online game, Rockstar’s GTA Online has had a somewhat troubled launch. Many, like me, couldn’t even get in to a game, some managed to play in a very laggy environment and some, poor bastards, have even had their single player saves corrupted just by trying to play.

Now obviously, with that billion dollars in sales in just three days, there are a lot of people trying to play the game and it’s only natural that the servers are being overloaded; much in the same way that the game’s iFruit companion app didn’t work for nearly a week after launch as people desperately tried to play stupid minigames with Chop.

Online issues are expected, but with the monumental sales figures and the staggered launch of the online component, you’d have imagined that Rockstar would have been able to prepare, and make sure that their systems were up to scratch. They didn’t.

What I find baffling though is that for some reason, Rockstar’s being given a free pass. Where online forums and sites raged about Diablo 3’s Error 37 for weeks, and the vitriol directed towards EA and Maxis for the Sim City launch was overflowing, yet most of the commentary you’ll find online right now about GTA Online’s issues are gentle; “Oh, it was to be expected,” and “It’s ok, it’ll all be working soon.”

Where’s that infamous internet hate? Why’s Rockstar exempt from the bile?

If you’ve been playing, tell us of your experiences.

Because GTA can be played offline, Diablo and Sim City can not.

Yeah, the game let me skip it, which is a serious plus on their side: to shoot the cops in the head five or six times to cause a fail was all it took

AND they gave me no points for continuous headshots

Let those always online bitches burn. I don’t have internet at the moment because of telkom issues regarding moving and it sucks that I can’t play certain games at all. This is when I feel like I can’t support those companies anymore.

Online is Online. You cant decide to separate it for the sake of convenience. FF had the same issue a few weeks ago yet still get less hate than error 37. Honestly there are just a bunch of children out there who were per-determinedly pissed off a Blizzard and used error 37 to validate their feelings. That said Blizzard were not properly prepared for the amount of users that purchased the game. Rockstar on the other hand at least had some time to try and make sure they didn’t experience the same issue.

When you make a game that can ONLY be played online (like D3) you have no excuses for server issues that means hardly anyone can play the game they paid good money for. GTA is primarily a single player game. Therefore people are more accepting of online issues as they can STILL play offline while the server issues get sorted. With D3 it was NO PLAY sometimes for more than a day due to “unforeseen” issues. No comparison can be made in this case. I am not a child, and I was a huge Blizzard fan (SC, Warcraft 3, WoW, Diablo 2, SC2) so there was nothing pre-determined about my anger over Error 37.

I’m with @f976ed88802359821d1304039cf5e0f3:disqus here. I wasn’t pre-determined to be pissed off. I’d really hoped it would be good because I was such a huge fan of their games. And they screwed up because they forced the game to be online when there was no good reason to do so (Point and case the console version).

They forced us online for a game that was very expensive and we could not play out of the box for days.

Can’t compare GTA issues to this. The online for GTA is an add-on feature. Not a core feature. They still allow people to play the game they paid money for without having to be online.

I’m not separating for the sake of convenience. Fact is, I can play my game I bought with my money with GTAV. With Diablo, I couldn’t, not even Single Player. I can’t see how you can even compare an always online single player experience with an added extra online component of a single player game.

Absolutely spot on! You can still play GTA even though the online portion isn’t working.

I am slightly annoyed that R* didn’t prepare for what now seems to have been an eventuality (millions of gamers wanting to play GTA online and the servers buckling under the stain), but unlike Blizzard or EA, they didn’t promise that it would work (another plus for R*). In fact, up until a few days ago, they released a statement that said that the launch would be broken.

However, I played a bit of the character creator and I’m not impressed with it. I like the idea of your grandparents and parents influencing how you look, but good grief… every character I made is ugly as sin. And then the detail on your character pales in comparison to… Lamar…

But I guess, we’ll have to see once the online portion actually runs without a hitch. Will it be worth it?

I could not finish a mission in “Offline” mode, because the servers were off. I needed to snap a pic of some drunken lady. I could not, because “could not contact server with photos or whatever” Not that I configures one or even link my xbox live account to the GTA one. I tried after this, but could not login.

So if your online problems affect my offline game, then shame on you.

Its quite simple actually, because your arent being forced to play online.

You can go jam single player to kill the time and whatever while you wait for the server issues to be resolved, you dont have to stare at the box art wishing you could just play the bloody game.
(I play with the console offline due to various reasons, and have no issues)

I got on in a solo session and although I didn’t get any missions in, I survived a couple of gang attacks, raced to a few crate drops, knocked over 6 or 7 stores, got into a 3 star death-chase in the desert, fending off the po-po and a helicopter with a measly pistol before making my escape by jumping onto a passing train.

Was pretty good — would have been better with mah crew, though. :/

Screw that. I’m mad. I’m mad as hell. I don’t care that it’s not “core to the central experience” blah blah. They’re sitting on a billion bloody dollars, and they had all the time in the world to divert some of that moolah and buy a few more servers to deal with the load. I couldn’t even create a character, or at least I could create one but it wouldn’t be saved because the Rockstar cloud servers were unavailable, so what’s the point of that? Stupid stupid stupid Rockstar. And I’m one of the Android users who’ve been completely screwed by iFruit, so this was just the icing on the cake.

For a game that’s so brilliant, this stuff just absolutely stinks. Bad Rockstar. Bad.

The game went live a few weeks ago? Around Sept 17 right (I own a PC so don’t know the release date since I can’t PLAY THE FRIGGIN GAME)? I don’t really think that they had THAT much time use their newly acquired billion bloody dollars to reinvest in the online part of the game.

Anyway. From what I hear the game rocks. Amazing. O. M. G.

I would have agreed with you on this rant. But in their defence, Rockstar was upfront and told us that the online thing will have issues on day one. And think about it this way: GTA V sold like a bazillion copies in one week. If past experience have taught us anything, it would be that a game this big will have day one issues. Hence, save yourself the frustration and wait a couple of days before logging in.

This is exactly why people should be more forgiving. Well before the launch, Rockstar had said that there will be teething problems. Will be. So, it was expected, and if people get mad then that’s their own fault. Now, Rockstar have something to gauge just how much server power they’re going to need – based on how many people tried to get in.

but they knew! that there is already probelms and they knew how many people were going to play online ( even if u only take 80% ). They made a Shit load in just 3 days. If you knew in 3 days how many people bought your game surly another 8days should be enough to fix the online issues. Or delay the online launch! and test it with a few selected “Lucky gamers” before you make every body that has a GTA 5 copy so frusttrated and annoyed ! Some ( not me) have even taken another sick day just to play Online.. ( dumb ass if u ask me ) but still… R* knew. and if u knew u could have done something about it or only realise reagion wise or something. BE pro-active not re-active!

Precisely. They knew and they had both the time and resources to at least try and pre-prepare. Wasn’t that the point of Online not being available on Day One anyway? Yet they didn’t, they chose instead to just let gamers endure yet another dismal Online launch day perpetuating the rapidly-growing precedent that online gaming never works on launch day. That’s acceptable if you’re a tiny dev selling a hundred k copies in your wildest dreams and endeavouring to create something completely unique and original, but not so fine when you’re literally the Rockstars of the game-development sector.

Ok, so you venture into new territory, not sure on how big the response is, considering your base is almost entirely single player. You decide, F*** it, lets go all, spend millions upon millions getting servers ready for Xmillion people, and not even 1M use the service. Wasted money right there. BUT, the smart move, test the waters, warn of teething problems, and upgrade as needed. Efficient from their point, and a good way to not waste money.

And yes, they made a lot of money from the single player game, but remember one thing: online requires a monthly cost to provide. For this many players, that cost is huge. Their money will run out. Just saying. Rather be cautious than over zealous. I’d not have done it any differently.

So yeah, they DIDN’T know. How could they? They’ve NEVER done THIS before.

Dude rEALLY!, 1: it aint A new VENTURE they spend 250 mil + developing it.( Not tlike they decided in the last month oh btw we doing onine as well) 2: we live in this era WHERE there is always online! 3: they Knew the moment they sold 1 bil that their servers aINT goin g to be enough!( Not to mention that they knew since they budgeted 250 mil + to make this game, based on prevouse sales ect ect.) 4: THE ONLINE MONTHLY COST has been included in the original price, they have micro transaction and there will be DLC cost later one. 5: How do u keep a gaming genre alive in todays time.. u ensure u have a reason for the gamers to come back.. hint hint ONLINE!.6: YES THEY HAVE DONE IT BEFORE. how big is their online Community??? Red dead, GTA 4 , MAx payne! All these online players would have bought GTA 5 since they liked playing these type of gamers.

But i get what you saying rather be cautious than over zealous, but come on! its Rockstar! They KNEW! and they fucking DROPPED THE BALL BIG TIME!

          • ToshZA

            October 2, 2013 at 13:34

They knew? A persistent online world of this size has never been done by them before. They couldn’t have known. Issues creep up, small things in the code that you miss without a live testing environment – it’s all things that you can’t prepare for. And to expect them to suddenly arrange for extra servers in only 8 days? Without knowing how many of those single player purchases were actually going to go online?

You see, if I had bought GTAV, I would NOT be going online. And i’m sure there are many people like me out there. How can they accurately predict those numbers without first actually going online? They can’t. They had no way of knowing.

Also, every major online game released has teething issues. There’s really no need to get worked up about it. It’s like they’ve killed your mother with the way you’re reacting. They didn’t steal your money, they’re not charging you a sub fee to play. They were prepared to work on the issues that the DID KNOW would arise, but they DIDN’T know EXACTLY WHAT those issues were going to be. They could not have known.

Now please, relax, take a breath, your family is fine – they didn’t kill anyone, and they didn’t steal your money. You still have plenty to do in the single player while they iron out these issues. Remember, Diablo 3 and Guild Wars 2 had similar issues, only there was no single player for them. They got screwed, you didn’t.

i am relax man ( If u knew mw u will laugh at ur own comment )( DONT TELL ME TO BE CALM!!! LOL), just saying and by no means am i worked up. But i am not so convinced, they did know, how can u ignore the facts .DId u know :If u have an online account on Xbox or PS3 All games today run what we call a little DRM( Small amount of data thats is dowbnloaded for the Dev servers) , XBOX often show it as a 2 -4 mb download file. that info is use by the game DEV to determine the use of their products Consider the amount they publish in sales records u can just imagine how many of us said ok for that little download. so they knew exactly how many where going to be online and trust me , there is millions. Now i aint worried if they stole my money or not… i am happy to pay for the awesome game love it to BITS , BUT in todays time since there is so many choice out there can u really afford to fuck up??? So in the spirit of this Article subject WHY are we so easily forgiving R* for this FUCK up! I AINT SO WILLING yes tere is SP and yes we can play it offline but thats not the point here, the point is they KNEW and they “F” ed up.

Well for one thing GTA has an offline component where as Diablo 3 and Sim city did not so even if you can’t get online you can still play the game.

You should also mention that, unlike Blizzard and EA, Rock Star stated prior to launch that they expect problems.

Now this is an excuse for connectivity issues but not for the numerous bugs people are experiencing.

Another issue would be Expectations. While yes we did have big expectations for GTA 5 being as the last numbers GTA game came out in 2008 that was still only a 5 year wait with a number of other GTA titles released in the interim. Diablo on the other hand was a 12 year wait and Sim City a 9 year wait.

And one last point, people like Rockstar more than Blizzard and EA, especially the latter of the 2, so are more willing to forgive them for their transgressions.

I get what you’re saying and I kind of agree with you. What bugs me is the lack of features freedom. I would have liked to see more jobs (at least very early on). When you start off, you have only a handful of missions, and between levels 1 – 5, you’re essentially left robbing shops for xp. It’s only after level 10 that the really cool missions start, – and that’s after an insane amount of grinding. Same with the misc. list of activities, like golf, tennis and even arm wrestling.

The grind… is the biggest issue with GTA Online at the moment. I still love it though. There’s just something about going on a drive by and taking down a bunch of unsuspecting players…. (yes.. that’s griefing behaviour… but I never said I was a nice guy).

Whether it’ll sustain my interest, depends greatly on what I play next.
