The Dead Island Riptide collector’s edition is…disturbing

It puts the lotion on its skin or...Oh wait, crap...

We just had a decent discussion yesterday as to whether or not games may be a tad too violent, and the answer was a resounding maybe. Still, gaming does need to do something to clean up its image, and frankly, selling a game with a serial killer training doll might not be the wisest move.

Yessiree, if you happen to just hate women who have such pesky things as limbs, heads and a spark of life, then this might be the collector’s edition for you! The Dead Island Riptide Zombie Bait Edition comes with the following statue of a bikini-clad statue that has some British patriotism attached to it’s more ample areas. Hail Britannia and all that.

It’s available in “select European and Australian territories”, while the American gamers out there with a fetish for hacked up collectibles will have to make do with the Rigor Mortis edition of the game instead. At least that one has a zombie hula girl bobble-head and a few other goodies. Still, if this little marketing stunt hasn’t put you off, the game will be out on Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC in April.

What do you think? Tongue in cheek, or just some appallingly bad taste in special edition design?

Update

Developer Deep Silver has obviously been listening to some of the backlash, as they’ve tweeted the following statement and apology:

A statement on the Zombie Bait Edition:

We deeply apologize for any offense caused by the Dead Island Riptide “Zombie Bait Edition”, the collector’s edition announced for Europe and Australia. Like many gaming companies, Deep Silver has many offices in different countries, which is why sometimes different versions of Collector’s Editions come into being for North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia.

For the limited run of the Zombie Bait Edition for Europe and Australia, a decision was made to include a gruesome statue of a zombie torso, which was cut up like many of our fans had done to the undead enemies in the original Dead Island.

We sincerely regret this choice. We are collecting feedback continuously from the Dead Island community, as well as the international gaming community at large, for ongoing internal meetings with Deep Silver’s entire international team today. For now, we want to reiterate to the community, fans and industry how deeply sorry we are, and that we are committed to making sure this will never happen again.

No clue as to whether or not they’ll still be selling that specific piece of tastelessness. Although I’d have given anything to be a fly on the wall when the board meeting to come up with a collector’s edition was decided on.
