Rumour: Team Ico lead leaves Sony

The rumour mill reports that Fumito Ueda. the creator of Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and the yet to be released Last Guardian has left Sony.

It won’t affect that last, highly anticipated game’s release (any more)  though, because he’ll finish up the project as a freelancer.

His departure from the company is apparently one of the reasons we’ve been waiting so long for The Last Guardian, the game about a relationship between a boy and a giant CatEagleThing. The game wowed people when it was trailered at E3 in 2009 – but has failed to show up at trade and gameshows since, being conspicuously absent from E3, Gamescom and the Tokyo Game Show. The game was originally scheduled for release this year, but has been pushed back to sometime in 2012.

“It’s been very difficult in terms of seeing the progress: not as fast as we’d been hoping for, and the team has been under big pressure,” Shuhei Yoshida, president of SCE studios said of the game. If you haven’t played his creations yet, you really should. Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are some of the finest examples of video games to come out of the last generation – and they’re available, in a remastered state to PlayStation 3 owners as an HD collection.

According to the rumour, once he’s finished up The Last Guardian, Ueda will “embark on personal projects.”
