Killzone3

With all of the Gearbox-centric news coming out of PAX, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was actually Gearbox Expo, and that no other publishers or studios were present. Not so!

Sony and Guerrilla Games were there to show off Killzone 3 – and its implementation of Playstation Move. IGN put up a few videos of their times with the motion controller, showing how it’s used in the anticipated shooter. Check ‘em out after the jump.

The most obviously notable thing is that the Move controller seems to control the gun itself, not the camera, as you’d expect from traditional controls. I don’t know if I’m stuck in the past – but it just seems..wrong somehow. Still, it’s intriguing, and I’d like to try it for myself to see if I’d play the game using these newfangled mechanics, or just stick to the tried and trusted Dualshock controls.

Thanks, IGN.

    Not sure, if others can view the vids, but I had to watch them on IGN. Is there a problem with the embedding?

    Odd, was working earlier. Re-embedded, and now it just shows up as a white screen.

    White screen in Chrome and Firefox, and IGN isn’t working for me now either. They’re probably down.

    Geoff I’m also a little worried about how the Move doesn’t control the camera. It would make turning a lot harder. I think I heard in the video that it will be customisable (Video doesn’t seem to work on Chrome).

    @RSA-Ace and Geoff:

    It controls both the camera and the reticule. The FPS games on the Wii and Killzone 3 use whats called a bounding box. Basically what this means is that when you point the reticule towards the borders of your TV the camera will move. If the reticule is biot touching the borders of your TV to look left, right, up or down then its just functions as a normal aim mode while the analogue on the navigator/slash dualshock will strafe for you. The explanation might make it sound awkward but i promise you its not and in no time you will be playing FPS on console with the accuracy and speed of a mouse and keyboard.

    Another thing to remember is that you can customize the settings in most Wii so im sure Sony will do the same i.e your bounding box could be made even smaller so you can turn faster just like the sensitivity settings of the aiming reticule can. I hope i explained that well enough. Go try out Red Steel 2 or metroid if you dont quite understand. Also notice in the vids that the Killzone devs say they had to turn off the auto aim on the sites for Move because its so accurate already. Like playing with a keyboard and mouse my friends. You can call me as deluded as you all like but when you guys eventually do try it for yourself i think you all will be pleased.

    I’ve played Both Red Steel 2 and Metroid prime (trilogy), but in both of those the wii pointer controls the cursor. In the move killzone demo, the move seems to have 1:1 control with the gun itself, and it just comes across as wrong. As I said, I’ll have to try it myself, with that particular game, to see if it’s something I can acclimatise to.

    I dont understand Tim??? Thats just an animation. In the Metroid prime trilogy Samus also moves her blaster/arm around if you point left or right but you still focus on the reticule just as you would in Metroid. Dont pay attention to the gun just follow the reticule. Also what does that have to do with your previous point about the camera?

    Maybe what you’re not liking is the fact that turning isn’t instantaneous. On a controller, moving the right analog will move the camera instantly,, whereas with the Move you still have to move the cursor to the edge of the screen.

    It will probably take some getting used to, but I can see how it can increase speed and accuracy. I don’t like holding the controller in one hand though, I prefer it “Time Crisis” style. So thank God they’re making an attachment for me 😀
