Like a Sir!

thatgamecompany, the people behind the beautiful, artsy games Journey and Flower are busy with their next game; their first game this generation that won’t be exclusive to Sony platforms. That doesn’t mean that they’ve fallen out of love for Sony or PlayStation gamers though.

Quite the contrary. In fact, thatgamecompany’s Jenova Chen believes that not only does Sony cater more to adult tastes, but that PlayStation gamers are more refined and decidedly more adult that the juvenile peons that inhabit Xbox Live.

“Sony has a more artistic and adult-focused taste,” he said in an e-mail to Gamesbeat. “They care about how grown-ups feel toward their games.”  continuing, he said that “The player who owns a PlayStation 3 is more likely to be interested in artistic games compared to Wii and Xbox 360.”

Unsurprisingly, Sony agrees. Sony’s Senior Director of PlayStation Digital Platforms, Jack Buser has this say:

“Our primary PSN audience is indeed more adult, and many of our best-selling titles appeal to this demographic. Many PlayStation and PSN games have themes that require a user to think and feel about a deep, immersive gameplay experience, and we see that exemplified in the success of titles like Flower, Journey and Heavy Rain. Titles like these can only be found on PlayStation, and our users enjoy the emotional and thematic sophistication of their games, especially with our digital offerings.”

Could they be right? Journey, a decidedly artistic, wonderful and wonderfully poncy game has become the PlayStation Network’s fastest selling title. On Xbox Live, a similar distinction belongs to Trials Evolution, which might not exactly be cerebral, but sure is fun. Personally, I completely agree that sony is certainly more willing to give more artistic games a chance, by giving them more exposure – but the assumption that PlayStation gamers are more refined? I think the only reason that perception that the Xbox’s primary userbase is  pimply-faced, squeaky voiced adolescents exists is because PlayStations don’t come with bundled microphones.

What do you think? Are PlayStation gamers a bunch of sirs?
