Sony has a Christmas present for all Gran Turismo 5 and Resistance fans out there, on the 20th of May next year the servers for Gran Turismo 5 are being shut down and all online functionality will be removed from the title.
Resistance isn’t as lucky with the servers for all three of their games being killed on the 28th March and as with GT5 that means you can no longer play online.
However it gets worse. For the fans of MAG and SOCOM your games will become totally useless on the 28th of January 2014 when their servers are shut down as they don’t have a single player mode at all.

As of 20 May 2014 you will no longer able to use the online features of the following game:

After these dates, you will still be able to play these games offline, with the exception of MAG and SOCOM: Confrontation, which do not have offline modes.

Honestly I’m quite surprised at GT5, it took forever to make and as soon as GT6 lands they announce they are turning GT5 off, that doesn’t sound like a company that is in it for the gamers as they are constantly saying at the moment.

Imagine if Microsoft sneaked always-online DRm through, this sort of thing would have hurt even more. ESPECIALLY since they were partnered with EA – a company that’s notorious for prematurely cutting server and online features after only a few months.

That’s a bit harsh when you consider that online multiplayer on the PS3 costs nothing for the gamer. Having GT5 and GT6 servers online and active eats into cash reserves they could use for other things. This won’t be a problem on PS4, presumably.

And that’s why games like Titanfall (where the focus is a mp-centric experience) rarely get my love. At least, Sony allowed the games to run for a couple of years ( A bit like how Halo 2’s server also died after a good number of years), as opposed to EA that cut servers after only a few months. Any one remember Skate 2? #SIGH

I guess I still have a few months to experience the legendary online of Resistance 2. It always sucks that I missed out on 8-player Co-op, back in the day – but that’s because I was a dumbass with only an xbox 360, rather than the awesome creature I am today (a gamer with both last-gen systems)

Gran Turismo 5 server is going down? dumbest thing ever to do. some people prefer GT5 over GT6. it should stay on for those who like GT5 more than GT6. im disappointed that the server is going down because i like GT5. whats the reason for shutting down the server? i dont know but whatever the reason is, it is not a good enough reason to shut down the server. i personally think that they are just shutting down the servers to force people to buy the new games and game systems so they can make money. Selfish motherfuckers. i belive that im speaking for all the GT5 fans that shutting down the server is the dumbest shit ever. your customers were satisfied. and now u go and fuck up the whole system. thanks a lot money hungry assholes.

Blame gamer’s. It’s our fault for buying games that didn’t have end-user server options from the onset of the PS3/360 era. Sony’s a financially fragile company at the moment, and can’t afford to host servers in perpetuity.
Hopefully people have learned this lesson the hard way and choose not to purchase games that encourage practices that we don’t agree with. No matter how awesome the GT franchise is heh.
