Gamescom 2015- Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is a fractured experience

Huddled into a corner on top of a sloppily put-together structure in the middle of the desert, Snake takes out his technologically advanced binoculars to survey the area. As I pan the camera around my surroundings, red blips show up – concentrated in a particular direction. The rest of the land is barren, devoid of life on the smallest scale and stretching out towards the horizon. This lowly camp is the only source of danger around for miles.

That’s both good and bad – with Metal Gear Solid feeling like it’s a little unsure what to do with all this freedom its giving players in the concluding chapter to the Hideo Kojima epic.

Being dropped into a dusty, empty piece of desert in the Middle East was a little jarring for a series I’ve become so familiar with over the years. The Phantom Pain is, of course, the first game in the series to offer open-word exploration – giving you the chance to approach enemy installations in a number of different ways. There’s a sense of unbridled freedom that has been missing from the series over the years, but its inclusion has some mixed results.

Metal Gear Solid V Gamescom Preview 1

With Snake’s trusty D Horse nearby, I quickly hopped on top and began making my way to the mission marker – one of many that can be selected at any time by simply bringing up your map. Kojima has touted the dynamism of The Phantom Pain’s open-world for months now, describing how wildlife and unexpected patrols can make getting from A to B as rewarding as actual missions. That wasn’t really the case in my time with it though – with the path from drop-off to mission being populated with nothing more than a light breeze and otherwise stunning views.

That’s just the luck of the draw it seems, but it is a little worry that a lot of this to-and-fro travel could end up as little more than boring padding. Once at the enemy outpost though, things ramped up rather quickly. After a shaky CQC engagement with a patrolling guard and a less than clinical tranquiliser dart to a overlooking watchman, I soon found my rhythm again.

Metal Gear Solid V Gamescom Preview 2

Marking enemies is central to The Phantom Pain, and works well in context with the game’s expansive environments. These small outposts where missions take place (like the kidnapping of a military official that drove my session) feel like little samples in the same vein as Ground Zeroes. There’s small and often condensed morsels of stealth gameplay, with the open world around it allowing you to approach it from any direction you see fit.

Unsurprisingly, these sections of play are the same level of near-flawless stealth action that you’ve come to expect from the franchise, albeit with the few tricks that Ground Zeroes introduced last year. If you choose you can still let the game give you a small out when detected – slowing down time to a crawl so that you can take out the poor perp who laid eyeballs on you. But for the most part it’s the same belly down, eyes up sneaking that Snake has redefined the genre with time and time again – if you want it to be.

Metal Gear Solid V Gamescom Preview 3

Gunplay is surprisingly tight for a game that is primarily focused on never using guns, meaning the loud approach was far more viable than I would’ve expected on previous entries. But robbing The Phantom Pain of these elegant stealth elements just felt wrong, and would’ve meant that I might have missed out on some of the sequel’s finer additions.

The changing time of day, for example, rapidly let me get closer and closer to enemies as the sun lowered slowly to the horizon. What started out as a mission during noon, stretched well into the night, with the stunning moonlight being the only spotlight witnessing my daring escape after the mission was complete. That, as well as the dynamic weather the game is also introducing, impact gameplay in a meaningful way – rather than just being some glossy eye candy.

Metal Gear Solid V Gamescom Preview 4

It’s just a little disheartening that it took a while for anything to actually start feeling like it meant anything, with the open-world preceding my cat-like infiltration feeling as dead as it was barren. Maybe it might have been a terrible hand that the game just chose to deal me, and I do hope the full product manages to captivate me fully from one mission to the next. Otherwise, Snake’s red prosthetic arm is not the only thing that’s going to feel a little hollow.

  1. I was afraid of this… MGS isnt meant to be “open world”… It’s about the story DAMMIT! I can already see me trying to avoid side missions and just sticking to the main campaign, If adding soldiers to the mother base doesnt add anything to the game I’ll just leave it altogether…

I’m not entirely sure one preview is really the best judgment to go on. Plenty of previewers both east and west, long time fans and not, have praised the changes and haven’t found fault with the narrative.

This isn’t a Review. This is an Impression on what he played. This was what he played at gamescom where the game was a DEMO. The demo doesn’t have everything in the game. They didn’t want to show you everything in the demo.

You should disregard this turd of a review since it’s based on a demo. Look for the people who had up to 5 days experience with the game and rest assured that it’s every bit immersive as you’d hoped for since the missions are varied and free-roam will enable you to tackle missions in one area in a non-linear way.

I’m a progressive person myself and love when games revolutionize themselves. Phantom Pain basically is Uncharted 4 with the action-packed events but.. without scripts. You’re in full control and that’s how I like it, especially in a non linear environment. I’m not fond of a giant openworld metropolis like GTA or Fallout 4 where you’re bombarded with so many quests that serve little else than filler. With Phantom Pain the rewards you get from side missions are both interesting and rewarding in a sense that it adds to the story and your progression.

What is so good about linear? It’s the choices that make Metal Gear games great. Like The End boss fight is amazing because of it.

I have to agree. The reason MGS did so well in the beginning was because of a well-crafted story told through a linear campaign. All this open world BS is going to dilute the experience and distract people from what should matter in these games. All because open world is the big trend now. Seriously f*@k Konami, f*@k them up their stupid asses.

You don’t seem to understand that previous MGS games were based on major story developments. Phantom Pain bridges Peacewalker with Metal Gear Solid / or Metal gear when you consider the older games. Since the story is already set in stone it has no need to be as alaborate as previous stories.

The open world element is a very ambitious project and from what we can tell from previewers it works extremely well and is superbly well polished. This deserves credit that should be going to Kojima.

You are a dull individual, if you go by this unprofessional person who reviews a fucking demo then you are just as stupid as he is. You cannot review a demonstration. People who go by that word are mentally inferior as well, such as you.

A Fulton recovery balloon was a method that the CIA used during the 60’s to extract soldiers. In this picture Snake is using one to extract a Goat to take home due to a contract to keep animals out of warzones.

No, this was in Peace Walker as well (somewhat). You have to keep morale up at your base. Assigning soldiers to different roles to maximize the base’s productivity. Have to make sure they eat.

That’s a real thing. Fulton surface to air retrieving system was developed by Robert Edison Fulton Jr., for the CIA, as a means to quickly retrieve personnel from an area where extraction would otherwise be problematic. It involves using an inflatable balloon attached to a harness that can be used for a plane to pick up the person that needs to be extracted. In MGSV:TPP, you can develop lots of things in your Motherbase, including a Fulton system that can retrieve, not just people, but animal too, and eventually, objects like jeeps and other transportation.

Really sounds like they showed off a bad part of the game. A lot of what they showed had you visiting smaller locales on the way to the mission marker, fultoning enemies and getting resources etc. Seems they’re relying on the Base Operations to fill in the void as well.

It was a DEMO as in a demonstration. What does this mean? That the demo was created for the purpose of just showing a playable glimps. Again, what does this mean? They only had one mission available in an area so that your focus was directed to that specific mission. In the actual game you have side missions, and those side missions were not available in that demo. Whn you look at the previews of people who played the near-completed version of the game for up to 5 days they didn’t see this problem.

Besides it still functioning like a kinder toy operating system…
My wife upgraded Sunday. Fucked everything up. Switched off. Back on again gave us only a black screen with the little windows mouse loading in the centre of it.
I fear the only way to fix it is to format, as nothing else works.

Eish that sucks. Mine worked perfectly. Took a bit less than an hour to do the whole upgrade, when I logged in again everything was pretty much just as I left it. Definitely feels snappier than 7, just have to get used to the flat style & Office-like taskbar ribbons.

I’m still sticking with 7 for now.
I really want to upgrade to 10, but I’ll wait a bit for now until everything’s been ironed out. The whole “settings” menu in 10 is such a load of bs though. Everything has to be moron friendly now.
I read up about our problem though. Many people have had the same problem, with no fix…one guy actually had his entire pc and his plugged-in portable wiped out on install.
Apparently win 10 has a “smart restore” function…which means that you can’t manually fix stuff, windows will do it for you…only it doesn’t work.

The default settings menu is fine, but the standard control panel is still there too. It’s just different, kinda like when upgrading from 3.1 to 95 or 98 to XP.

            I see… interesting.
It’s luck of the draw though with software. You can’t expect it to be perfect on everything. With my luck though, I should probably keep using win 7 until they announce win 11.

MGSV isn’t meant to be one person’s preference; it’s to conform to everyone’s preference while sticking to the core of MGS while also being different. So, you like stealth? Go get em. You like rambo? GO GET EM! Never ever trust a review as it’s only one person’s opinion. The only person’s opinion that matters is YOURS so go pre-order it, have fun and judge the game yourself. Good review though but no one should judge the reviewer or the game being reviewed just by what you read.

I like to point out that this ‘review’ was based on a demo that was altered for the public. Meaning that the full version will be filled with side missions and not just one mission.

You cannot review a demo, you are one of the most unprofessional “journalists”, and I use that word very loosely, that I have ever come across, people with intelligence will do the complete opposite of what you think. You ought to be ashamed of yourself thinking that reviewing a demo is fair and ok to do. Shame on you, if you say game is bad that means it is great, if it is good that means it is bad. Who would’ve thought a desert is barren? This whole time everyone thought there were carnivals and racetracks, and ice hockey games going on there. A barren desert, that is false advertising, you define remedial.

This should only come as a surprise to people who have paid little attention to TPP previews. The very first game play video of The Phantom Pain that was released two years ago indicated what you are saying. It showed Snake making his way through a barren desert, and it actually fast forwarded through long bits of nothing happening to get to the interesting stuff. Long and uneventful treks between point A and point B are part and parcel of open world game play, always have been.

“Gunplay is surprisingly tight for a game that is primarily focused on never using guns,”
and with that the reviewer show that either he doesnt understand how games work, or was expecting something completly diferent from the rest of the world…

in any case, goes to show how “spot on” this review really is…
