Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer was unfortunately beset by cheating; console and PC players alike complaining of exploits, glitches and cheats. Treyarch don’t want the same mistakes to be repeated and have implemented numerous anti-cheat systems. One of these is that everything contained in your multiplayer profile – from classes, to perks to COD points is stored and verified online. This should prevent cheaters and hackers from unlocking things without doing the necessary work. Of course, there are many more cheaters in the wild than there are designing anti-cheat mechanisms for Treyarch – so it remains to be seen if they’ll remain successful in keeping Black Ops free of hacks.
For a game like Black Ops it’s nigh impossible to comprehensively review the multiplayer in such a short time – it’ll take months to establish whether or not the game’s as balanced as intended. For now though, it looks like it’s going to be a winner.
Rounding out the whole package is Zombies mode. Where Infinity Ward implemented a co-op campaign through their Spec Ops modes, Treyarch have included co-op by virtue of their popular Zombies mode. It’s largely unchanged from its implementation in World at War. Zombies are trying to enter a building you’re occupying – and it’s your job, working as a team, to keep them out. There are only two Zombies maps included with the retail game, but purchasers of the hardened and prestige editions get the maps from World at War as well.
Hidden in the game is also the retro-tastic Dead Ops Arcade, a top-down twin stick shooter in the vein of Alien Swarm and I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MBIES 1N IT!!!1. It’s silly, fun – and playable co-operatively either on the same screen or over the internet.
With such a well rounded package it’s hard not be impressed by, and recommend Black Ops. It’s Treyarch’s best Call of Duty yet – and one of the best in the franchise. There’s much supposition and conjecture as to whether or not Black Ops will match the sales and critical acclaim of Modern Warfare 2, and from my experience with the title, it deserves to.
Disclosure: The review was conducted over a three-day period at a review event outside of London. The single player review was conducted on an Xbox 360 at my own pace in my hotel room with no intervention from PR or the game’s developers. The game was played to completion on regular, and took in the region of 8 hours. The multiplayer component was played in a specified room with other media representatives. As multiplayer information is verified online, the multiplayer sessions were conducted over Xbox Live, although certain modes were tested using system link.
Conclusion:
Treyarch opted to make a more story-focused single player, and they’ve done so with aplomb. They’ve refined the series’ well known multiplayer – fine tuning and balancing to produce an exemplary first person shooter – and may have even unseated Infinity Ward as the premier Call of Duty developer. It’s a Royale with cheese. Tasty!
Scoring
Gameplay: 8.5
It’s the same Call of Duty gameplay you know and love. If it ain’t broke, why fix it?
Presentation: 9.0
New distinct slick menus make a welcome change. Incredible motion capture adds a human element generally missing from first person shooters. Your character finally has a body, and shadows.
Sound: 9.0
Superlative voice acting, punchy sound effects and The Rolling Stones’ Sympathy for the Devil.
Value: 9.5
If you’re online, you know that you’ll be playing this for the next few months – at least until the next Call of Duty. A fantastic single player campaign, plus extensive multiplayer – plus zombie mode and the delightful Dead Ops Arcade give this exceptional value.
Overall: 9.0 (not an average)
I’m not a huge fan of first person shooters – and as far as I’m concerned Modern Warfare 2 is the most overhyped title in recent memory, but this is a must buy for fans of the genre – and fans of good games.

So did you get an advanced copy of the game? If not, I don’t think it’s entirely fair putting a “review” out just yet. I’d rather you have played the game more first and put out a proper review, because this seems more like a preview based on pre-release info.
I understand with a high profile title like this Megarom may not be able to give you the ability to review the game properly prior to its street date, but in the future I’d like to see reviews written based on enough game play by the reviewer.

You didn’t read the disclosure? I played and finished the game last week, and spent quite some time on the multiplayer.

Good deal. No, I didn’t see any disclosure in the review. Unless you meant the first paragraph, that if I read it again, based on the info from your comment, hints at the exclusive event.

I’m on a 4mb (8 or 10mb since the upgrade) line and i still battle to connect to lobbies and games are laggy as… is that everyone’s experience? Or am i being noob about something here?
Geoffrey Tim
November 11, 2010 at 15:49
The lag issue is a tricky one at the moment; With Mweb cutting paid-for peering links, a lot of local traffic now gets routed overseas, increasing latency and adding lag.
The best bet, to reduce lag, would be to play with people you know who’re South Africans on your friendslist – and provided you’re all peered, it should be lag free. Once Telkom and vodacom peer with Mweb without charging for it, local lag should be significantly reduced.
If you’re playing internationals, lag will ALWAYS be a factor.
