Both Microsoft and Sony claim November sales victory

Double Trouble

In November both the Microsoft Xbox One and Sony PlayStation 4 were released in America and selected other countries. So with the November sales for America now being finalised who won in the first month of sales? Well both of them apparently…

Sony were the first to announce their victory by stating:

PlayStation 4 sales in North America and worldwide have been incredibly strong since launch, culminating in PS4 being recognized as the largest console launch in history. In North America alone, more than one million PS4 units were sold in only 24 hours and we’re pleased NPD has reported that PS4 was the top selling next gen platform for both hardware and software in November.

We are humbled by the passion and excitement demonstrated by gamers for PS4. Demand continues to overwhelm supply, but we’re working hard to get PS4 units into the hands of customers throughout the holiday season.

However things weren’t that simply with Microsoft quickly releasing their own press release claiming they won November.

November NPD Group figures released today revealed 909,132 Xbox One units were sold in the U.S. in the console’s first nine days, making it the fastest selling console on the market in the U.S. Xbox One sales averaged a volume of more than 101,000 consoles per day, significantly outpacing the nearest competitor.

They go on to state

  • Total retail spend on the Xbox platform (Xbox One and Xbox 360) in November (hardware, software and accessories) reached $1.21 billion, the most for any console in the U.S. (Source: NPD Group).
  • During the month of November, Xbox (Xbox One and Xbox 360) held five of the top 10 spots on the console game title list (Source: NPD Group).
  • During the month of November, Xbox One sold nearly three times as many units compared to Xbox 360 in the U.S. during its November 2005 launch (Source: NPD Group).

As always the devil is in the details and if you read exactly what both companies are saying we can see that the Sony PlayStation 4 is the top console seller of the generation beating out the Xbox One but don’t forget the PS4 had a 7 day head start leaving the Xbox One only 7 days to catch up.

So Microsoft’s claim is actually more powerful, with them stating that the Xbox One significantly outsold the closest competitor day-on-day, which if true should mean the Xbox One should take the lead in America by the end of December.

This isn’t a massive surprise though since America has always been Microsoft country and the real battle will be fought in Europe and EMEA (us) with PlayStation guaranteed to take Japan and surrounding countries.

When it comes to software sales I need you all to sit down because it looks like, for the first time ever, Call of Duty has taken the top spot… you thought I was going to say failed didn’t you?

Here are your top 10

  1. Call of Duty: Ghosts (Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, PC, Wii U)
  2. Battlefield 4 (Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, PC)
  3. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (360, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, PC, Wii U)
  4. Madden NFL 25 (Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, Xbox One)
  5. Grand Theft Auto V (Xbox 360, PS3)
  6. NBA 2K14 (Xbox 360, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, PC)
  7. Skylanders: Swap Force (Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, 3DS, Xbox One, PS4)
  8. Just Dance 2014 (Wii, Xbox 360, Wii U, Xbox One, PS3, PS4)
  9. Disney Infinity (Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, 3DS)
  10. FIFA 14 (Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, PS Vita)

Assassin’s Creed is doing remarkably well and I have to admit I’m surprised that GTA V has dropped below Madden. Granted it only released on two platforms but even so I expect it to receive huge sales in December as people need Christmas presents.

I can’t believe Gavin fell for the MS spin. Let me break it down for you Gavin.

    – Sony sold 1.1 million units in the US in 48 hours. They didn’t have stock to sell for day 3, 4 , 5, 6 till a refresh of stock on day seven. They would have sold zero on the days proceding the first 48 hours until the stock refresh. Add a second week of stock shortages and you have 10 – 11 days where Sony sold zero PS4 consoles. Sony’s daily sales are averaged over two weeks.

    – MS sold 700 000 units in the first seven days. 101 000 units per day. That figure is averaged over only 7 days. They launched a week later than PS4. One sales will also cool down because sales in the second console sales week always slow down and stock shortages could also maybe still be an issue for MS in week two.

This is far from a win for MS. They dominated the US with 360 and now they are behind. No amount of spin is going to change this.

I can’t believe you are buying this Major Nelson spin Gavin.

I hope you guys aren’t buying into the Wii U sales up 340% spin also lol

no one is behind yet. You can spin numbers anyway you want but from what I’m seeing by the end of Jan there will be more Xbox One’s sold than PS4’s IN AMERICA.

until then it’s total gues work

He didn’t fall for anything he contractually bound to never have an opinion and always present both consoles as if they are fair and on the same level. Microsofy has to do this to still seem relevant.

If you are an xbox one owner and wondering why your new “next gen” console has last gen tech DDR3 ram in it, it is because they spent there entire budget on marketing. That’s what your extra $100 dollars paid for. Disinformation disguised as advertising and marketing.

And its spineless monkeys like gavin who just roll over for M$ and just copy and paste.

Apparently, PS4 had the biggest launch in console history for South Africa. Now obviously we’re not talking 100 000s in numbers (most likely we’re looking at between 1200 and 5000 (if we’re lucky). But it’s still pretty exciting, and that is a feather in Sony’s cap. Now they just need to keep the supply chain lubricated.

That 7 day head start is negligible. PS4 basically sold out after 24hours in the US and have probably been struggling to keep up with demand ever since.

XB1 took 9 days to reach 900k making much easier for them to keep up with demand imo.

So I think XB1 is gonna struggle to take the lead in the US anytime soon. (Not that they are way behind or doing badly in any way….)

Apparently (and this is from Gamestop themselves) there are +2 million folk waiting on PS4 pre-orders and that’s at one store chain alone. Sure, you can’t sell what you don’t have, but the next shipment of stock hit the EU last week (almost sold out again) and the US has another shipment coming in on the 20th. Those are insane numbers….

I’ve never seen a launch like this. I’ve never seen demand for a console this this. It’s still nowhere near what apple manages with their iOS devices but holy smoke…

To be Honest, I don’t care who won. I know I have a new shiny next gen console sitting in the lounge and I have already finished Killzone. Microsoft has a better Game lineup. Now I have to play Battlefield 4. On a side note, I thought that Battlefield looked the same on the PS4 as It did on the PS3 until I saw the effects. Goodness me, I was seriously impressed with the PS4 when I saw that.

The strategies are so different this time round. Microsoft has delayed launch in the other tier countries purely to wrestle the US back from Sony – they’re apparently redirecting stock to keep the US stocked with Xbones – but in not releasing elsewhere in the world, Sony is getting a good foot hold. Sony on the other hand is pushing to plant its flag in as many countries as possible.

I think in the long term their strategy is going to pay off. I’m not sure what Microsoft is thinking, a US-centric entertainment box with US-centric features…. They might be squeezing themselves into a tiny box.

Essentially microsoft did some creative stats to claim the fastest selling tag. It’s actually hilarious when you sit down and actually think about it, because they’re claiming that if Item A sells 1 million in 24 hours and Item B sells 1 million in 9 days, and you then take a sales average for the WHOLE month (yet Item B has only been out for 9 days as opposed to Item A), then Item B wins… why? Because creative maths…. and creative averaging.

The weird thing is people actually fell for this nonsense. Microsoft should have just said “We sold extremely well, we made a million in the first week and we’re proud of that”. Instead we get a desperate marketing ploy which is even more nauseating.
