Hot dang, I don’t dont understand people that think that Battlefield 3 didn’t benefit from pitting itself so heavily against the behemoth that is Modern Warfare because Battlefield 3 is definitely kicking some ass for EA in the sales department.
Granted, a good game pulls in good sales regardless of the competition, not to mention good marketing, at which EA have proven to be pretty adept.
The EA CFO announced yesterday in a report on Gamespot that Battlefield 3 has sold 8 million copies through to gamers already and shipped a total of 12 million units overall. Pretty impressive and significant when you take into account that Battlefield Bad Company 2, a game that is very similar in structure to Battlefield 3, but never compared to the Call of Duty series much, only sold a total of 9 million copies to date. That includes the ridiculously low prices that it sold for at the end of last year.
To put things into perspective, Modern Warfare 3 sold a massive 6.5 million units in the UK and US in its first day, so let’s not get confused here. While Battlefield 3 is doing incredibly well for itself, it’s going to be a long, long time before it can even think of overtaking or dethroning the Call of Duty franchise.
