Home Gaming Playstation 4 Pricing Announced

Playstation 4 Pricing Announced

Sony have finally announced their pricing for the new Playstation 4. How does this compare to the next Xbox pricing revealed by Microsoft?

I can’t help but feel that Sony had the edge in the conference, but they have topped it off with something just a little bit more phenomenal. The Playstation 4 will be launching at $399, a full $100 cheaper than the Xbox One.

WHAT?!?! How is that even possible? Xbox have always had an edge in the price of their consoles, but it appears they just lost it in the next generation. The forced bundle of the kinect must surely be one of the factors contributing to their current recommended price.

After doing some rough calculations and inputting the dollars into my converter, taking into account supposed costs which ramp up the price here in South Africa, I can only guess that the Playstation will hit our shores at a  cost of about R4600-R5600. That is still a little steep, but really not too bad when one remembers that Playstation 3 launched at something crazy like R6500 all those years ago.

Throw in the used games announcement, the benefits of PS+, the vast library of exclusives and so on, Sony really look like they have this next generation in the bag. Microsoft are going to have to rethink their strategy if they wish to be a serious contender in the next console war.

Most of what we saw was really good. I also stayed up and watched all the conferences. MS had the wider selection of exclusive games, and with the new studios they have opened, by my calculation they now have more exclusive studios than Sony does. They are a little expensive though and their DRM isn’t that cool.

Sony seem to have great indie support, no DRM, and some great bonuses to their plus service. Speaking of which, no more free multiplayer on the Sony box (i liked how they sneaked that in), but their plus service seems worth it already.

All in all, I think the Sony show was more impressive. As of now, the PS4 is looking to be my console of choice for the next generation, and that would be true even if I was living in America. Looks like Sony survived the dreaded third console fail and came out strong. Time for MS to experience it.

But previously PlayStation was more expensive because of Blueray. No such edge this time, why not go cheaper. I bought Xbox based purely on the fact that it cost HALF what the PS3 did, at the time I bought.

So looks awesome, must be honest

I was always such an adamant Microsoft and Xbox lover. I really hated the PS controller and the whole feel of the play station. I had grown up with the Xbox and all my friends apart from one had an Xbox. I have owned four different Xboxes. I imagined i would always have an Xbox. And holy shit, in the short space of a few weeks, my whole world has been flipped upside down. I now cannot see an Xbone by my TV. I am now planning to see where that blue light will look the best in my cabinet…

1)Sony has the ability to share games.

2)Sony has no online only (so a larger potential market)
      3) Sony still has some incredible games coming to it (some great exclusives) and even the cross platform ones are fine because those can be shared and have no DRM on the PS4, can be played offline, can be resold.

So yes, XBone has a larger current exclusive pool and some cool features but the demographic of people who can utilise it is far smaller than potential PS4 demographic as there is no internet required for PS4.

So the PS4 has a much better gamer-centric environment where you can lend games, resell them (easily and with no worries about ditional fees from developers), play without the need for internet and the cross-platform games will be DRM free on your PS4 while that same game will be locked on the Xbox platform because you have to link it to your account.

So the bigger exlusives pool I don’t think will be enough of a selling point for the Xbox.

I am a PC player so there is no fanboism here. I’m just viewing it from a market viewpoint and what the consumer’s logical thought process will be.

Yes there will be those who the XBox restrictions don’t affect, but from a logical business viewpoint that section of user’s is far smaller in terms of the greater picture. There are far more restricted gamers than those who don’t mind or wouldn’t be affected. So in theory the majority of sales will go to the PS4 simply because more people can a) afford it. b)use it since it doesn’t restrict you as much

I have no fucking idea what they are thinking. At least give some sort of incentive to bring your market over by adding backwards compatible games for the people who have over 100 360games.

They want to kill the second hand market? I can see the all of the 360 games ending up in the second hand market with no buyers.

        They killed themselves.

Sony is kicking as so far. Some people complain that you have to have PSN+ to play online but it’s worth it. I bought a 1 year subscription today for the first time and it was so worth it. Cost me R489 and I already got about R1000 worth of games at no cost. Another great thing is that this sub will carry over to the PS4, can’t wait for release 😀

  32. X1 will Dominate

    June 13, 2013 at 07:13

Lol I dont know what all you guys are getting excited about. DRM is still there for the PS4 and will be an reality, because its up to the developers whether or not they choose their product to be able to trade in for a friend, retailers etc. only bad thing about PS4 is that you would then have to be online ALL the time while playing a game so they can make sure your not abusing their DRM policy, rather than X1 where you just have to log in óncé everyday. On the X1 you will even be able to trade your game to a friend on the other side of the planet DIGITALLY, and he will be able to return it or buy it with your approval, without actually having to meet up with a physical disc.
So you might not have to log in everyday on the PS4, but in longer terms the X1 will dominate the PS4 as the developers will turn their back on PS4 or make it so that you have to be online ALL time while gaming, even single-player which would suck balls really hard..
Not only that, thx to the extreme cloud processing power and the all new XLive, X1 will dominate PS4 and be a much better gaming console especially for those who love big online persistent and living worlds…
+ It got TV, TV, TV just in a click away 🙂 So its much FASTER, and BETTER for gaming and entertainment.
I’ll go with the X1 and advice you too aswell, but I guess in a minute or less you will all hate on me like fanboys and tell me to stick it up Microsoft LOL. ragers.
