Titanfall 2’s next beta is making some big changes after listening to the fans

Titanfall-2-cha-cha-changes

You might have gotten the impression lately that I wasn’t too impressed with Titanfall 2, thanks to a recent technical test. And you’d be quite right on that assumption. No seriously, listen here. Titanfall 2 isn’t a bad game that can crush man’s skull like sparrow’s egg between mighty mechanical thighs. It’s just a bad Titanfall game, right?

And I’m not the only person who had a gripe with it. It genuinely felt like the heart and soul of Titanfall had been gutted, replaced with a game of Call of Duty catch-up, sluggish pilots and an overall balance of gameplay that wiped the field of any fun that the original had accomplished. Fans of the original, weren’t happy. Fortunately Respawn Entertainment has been listening.

“Many players are wondering why we changed the mobility from Titanfall 1,” game designer Steven DeRose said on a new blog post that detailed how the first technical test was built on a beta that was already several months old and didn’t feature any upgraded traversal mechanics that’ll be present in the second weekend of testing.

We identified two major issues we wanted to solve in Titanfall 2. The first is that a lack of player predictability would often cause players to be shot from the back or sides. While flanking is an important part of gameplay, death often felt random instead of skillful. The second issue is that close range firefights were overly chaotic due to erratic player movement.

So, changes to Pilot mobility stemmed from a desire to improve our gunplay, and not a desire to slow down movement.

Which means that players can expect quicker air speed and wall-running as Respawn is “testing scaling back some of the dampening factors that were limiting bunny-hopping as we don’t want these restrictions to impact normal traversal”.  DeRose also explained that more varied maps will be on offer than what was seen in the limited beta, and several big changes to the Titans themselves.

Titans will now have a slightly quicker recharge on their dash ability, while players will also receive a passive charge to their titanfall ability, as opposed to making it a killstreak bonus:

We made some changes in Titanfall 2 with the goal of rewarding players for playing game mode objectives. However, we observed the problem that players can try to play the objective but fail, resulting in slower than intended Titan acquisition. We still want objectives to be the fastest way to get a Titan, but the goal of every player being guaranteed a Titan per match hasn’t changed.

There’s several other changes being listed on the Titanfall 2 site, but its already sounding much better. Hopefully this second technical can restore some faith in the sequel when it kicks off on August 26 from 9AM PT/12PM ET time. Beta deux includes an Amped Hardpoint map, although I sorely and truly miss that glorious smart pistol that made me feel like I had some actual talent in a FPS for once.

  1. That photoshop work is actually pretty decent.

I don’t listen to him, so I don’t get the reference (and don’t care to), but I thought the skills should be recognised nonetheless.

I’m glad they are listening to the fans but I have to say I’m very worried that they made such a massive screw up in the first place.. either they aren’t sure what makes their game tick or they have terrible inhouse testers
