Black Ops 2 is the CoD4 killer

Call of Duty 4 has survived for years as the biggest competitive title in the Do Gaming League. It even outlived its would-be successors Modern Warfare 2 and 3. Black Ops 2 has however become the new FPS king of the league, begging the question: Should Call of Duty 4 be dropped from the competitive roster?

Call of Duty 4 was the game that got me into eSports back in 2009; it was the big title in the league. But entries for the DGL CoD4 league have rapidly declined in the last three years, and are now at an all time low.

But is it enough to drop the game from the roster? Yes and no. The number of entries for first-person-shooters is as follows:

Based on the numbers with CoD4 not being the title with the least entries, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive being a much newer game, I’d say the amount of entries shouldn’t determine the drop.

CoD4 is however the title that’s been on the league roster the longest, and will eventually have to die out. I won’t pretend that I love everything about Black Ops 2, but it’s definitely the best Call of Duty title released for eSports after CoD4 and has no doubt become the favoured title with the highest number of entries of all the FPS titles in the league. Speaking strictly from a competitive point of view, even though it takes a while to get used to the maps, it has that competitive vibe CoD4 had.

The only thing that can better it at this stage is having dedicated servers. Don’t get me wrong, Steam is great, but all too often teams can’t get enough practise in for their league matches because of disconnects for both teams playing the clanny. At least with dedicated severs, teams are able to move to a different server and continue their practise matches.

I would imagine that Steam constantly disconnecting because of some random SEACOM issue could cause some real headaches during league matches too. Luckily, it doesn’t happen too often, but could be the difference between a win or a loss for a team.

Coming back to CoD4; Promod was an incredible competitive mode, but it might be time for the game to kick the bucket already.

But why? Modern Warfare is comparable to the Counterstrike 1.6 of the decade. Why settle for sloppy Susans?

Edit: We sorely need a CoD supplement, now is the time. Will TitanFall step up?

I for one hope TitanFall is as good as it looks, and takes a place on the stand of legend competitive games. It’s time for a change, I fear Ghosts might be a disappointment, simply because it seems like it will be and feel like MW2 and 3. I might be wrong, and I seriously hope that I am.

I have only played one CoD after CoD4 for two reasons: It didn’t feel right and Steam. My Telkom cable was stolen, my brother in law has been without for 6 years. How are we supposed to play? And I loved playing CoD4 online!!!

CoD4 definitely has a certain feel to it, doesn’t it? They’ll never be able to replicate it.

Never ever again. It felt fresh at the time, and the clones (or sequels) just couldn’t recapture the magic 🙁

IMO, Blops2 is a much better MP game than COD4, so I would say yes to drop COD4 and replace it with Blops2…

wow this post again always see the same post every year on at least one of the gaming news sites. Cod 4 has 34 teams that is still allot in terms of other leagues and entries. Cod 4 will be dead when the community says its enough .Unfortunately Blops2 is one of the most frustrating MP games i have ever played and deserves to be thrown in the bin. But how ever there are teams and players for the game and most of us will follow the crowd even thou its a horribly designed game with bad Lag compensation and Hit Detection we will play. MW3 would have been successful. But Ghosts comes out and the same will happen to blops2 . COD games only have a shelf life of a year these days.

      maybe titanfall is the answer

Definitely well said, BLOPS2 is greatly frustrating, to me it’s like playing Metro in BF3 and repeatedly getting blasted by RPGs. I have gotten used to it now, and still have more fun playing it than other fps’s. TDM is great :>

I have to agree with hackZoR. They honestly do not make games the way they used to considering they’re trying to make it way too life like i.m.o. I mean, if you want that, go to the army for pete sakes. Games aren’t as fun as they used to be, these days you just struggle with exactly what hackZoR named not only that, but games aren’t even released when it’s complete anymore, you’re basically buying the beta form and have to DL tons of patches just to make up for their slip ups.

Well I’ve played enough of CoD to be able to say, weapon damage is ridiculously unrealistic. Firing a .50 cal sniper rifle still takes more than one shot to kill someone. I say it is time for a change. the gaming industry is going backwards because we hold on to a game that is old, we moan about developers not making new games but we hold on to old games.

You sir took the words right out of my mouth. Nothing irks me more than firing multiple MP7 rounds into the enemies chest only to be meleed in the knee. I say 3-4 hits for a knife attack unless it is from the back, in which case one would be ok. Also pistols, why the fuck do they do more damage than an assualt rifle? Lastly is quick scoping, that is the most ridiculous thing ever! Anyone firing a sniper rifle while not holding the weapon properly will do a lot of damage to themselves! Rant over.

Dedicated servers and a server browser are the only reason that I have played almost 1200 hours of Blops1 online and only about 300 hours of Blops2.

Heck, if there are people still enjoying it, I don’t see why it should be dropped…
