Oh look, another Wii U update!

We’ve got ourselves a Wii U – and I have to admit that I’m pretty damned impressed with the console. I’ll have something more in depth for you later, but I can confirm that the 5gb update is a load of hogswash; my data usage shows it to be no larger than 1Gb. Still, it did take two hours to download. And users can expect another update today.

Yup, that’s right – the second major firmware update within two weeks of the system’s availability. This new one clocks in at 625Mb, and could take many users over an hour to download. I’m busy downloading the update as I write this – and it’s pretty slow going.

The good news is that pretty much all Wii U game and system updates, you can do them in the background while you continue to play games – and the better news is that this update apparently improves the system’s loading speeds, system stability and general performance.

As with all firmware updates for anything, it’s probably not a smart plan to unplug or disconnect the unit while the update itself is installing – but there are no worries of a bricked console if that happens during the download.

Here’s the warning, straight from Nintendo:

    • The update can take up to an hour to download. The new system update may take an extended amount of time to download. Depending on the speed of the Internet connection used, it could take an hour or more to download and install. Please be patient.
    • During the update, the progress bar displayed on the Wii U GamePad may take a while to start moving. This is normal.
    • Do not unplug your system while the update is downloading or installing. If the system update is interrupted by unplugging the system, you may damage the system.

Interestingly, a new 3DS update has just gone live as well – and there’s a new Nintendo direct episode going live later. Is there to be some sort of odd cross-platform functionality? Who knows!

Any of you picked up a Wii U and want to tell us of your experiences with the system?
