I love the Wii U, but dammit, the console is on some shaky ground right now. Despite having a great launch with some top level games thrown in from DarkSiders 2 to the latest addition to the Super Mario Bros franchise, the console is having a hard time remaining relevant. And quite simply, that’s because it needs more games. And fortunately, that’s exactly what’s going to happen according to the latest Nintendo Direct conference, because some heavy-hitting first party titles are on the way.

First up, is that portly plumber from Italy, Mario, who will be back once again in a brand new Super Mario game from the lads behind Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 3D Land. It’s a brand new 3D Mario title that is in the works, and it’ll be playable at E3 this year, alongside anew Mario Kart game as well. Adding more to that MARIO MARIO MARIO MARIO fire, is a new Super Smash Bros title as well, but it’s still needs some incubation time according to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata.

Staying with Mario, but moving away slightly, is also a new game starring his gluttonous dinosaur sidekick, Yoshi. Yarn Yoshi, the first solo Yoshi game in 15 years, will have the green guy under the direction of Takashi Tezuka, who handled previous Yoshi games such as the Island and Story adventure titles. The studio behind Kirby’s Epic Yarn is in charge of development, and more details will arrive later this year. And to cap off the plumber news, a new collection of quick mini-games in the form of Game and Wario, is also scheduled to land in the first half of 2013.

Sticking with familiar franchises, a new Wii Party is also headed to the Wii U. New games, styles of play and competitive gaming using the GamePad are lined up for this one, but the real big news came from the Legend of Zelda camp. Producer Eiji Aonuma popped up to announce that a new Zelda game was in the works, but that the team still needed a lot more time before they could even announce it or show off footage. Instead, gamers this year will be able to get their hands on The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

One of the very best Zelda games ever made, the ten year old title is getting an HD update, and the results look stunning to say the least. And quite honestly, I was almost in manly tears at this announcement. It’ll be out later in the year, and I cannot wait for it, as that happens to be my very first and favourite GameCube game.
