Next generation consoles will allow for “more dynamic worlds”

Thank you, Captain Obvious!

Just over two years since their respective releases, it’s becoming increasingly apparent that consoles just aren’t able to compete with the bleeding edge in PCs. And that’s not just okay, that’s expected – given that an entire new-gen console costs half of what you’d expect to pay for a top-of-the-line video card.

Sooner or later, we’re going to have to replace our PlayStation 4s and Xbox Ones (and yes, our Wii Us as well). What might we expect from this sort of future technology? According Criterion’s former technology director Paul Ross (now busy making the ludicrous, physics-based Dangerous Golf), the next generation of consoles will allow game developers to create worlds that are “far more dynamic”, “interactive” and “believable.”

Speaking to Edge Magazine (via Videogamer), Ross and the rest of the team at Dangerous Golf developer Three Fields Entertainment sat around wondering what future console games might be like, and pondered “how can we start to build for that future now?”

“Physics engines haven’t changed since I did the physics on [Dreamcast game] TrickStyle. They’re all about rigid bodies, solid objects. This is a real paradigm shift because it’s about simulating physics at a molecular level. It’s been a really hard problem to solve for quite a while.

“So what does a PS5 game look like? With PS4 we’ve seen some fidelity put into the worlds, but PS5’s going to be about more dynamic worlds, far more interactive worlds that are more believable in the way they behave.”

While this really boils down to little more than “New version of thing will be better than old version of thing,” new gaming technologies are always interesting, especially where physics are concerned. While we may hit a plateau when it comes to graphics, and virtual words become aesthetically indistinguishable from real ones, it’s the differences in how things react that’ll drive immersion.

Neither Sony nor Microsoft have announced their plans to release a new console, but you can bet that they both have something in the preliminary research and development stage. Sony’s proven that there’s still a demand for consoles with unfathomable sales of the PlayStation 4, and Xboss Phil Spencer has said that he expect Microsoft to make another console after the Xbox One.

Isn’t that what this generation is meant to do?

Nope, it was meant to do 1080p and 60fps.

Current gen pc’s do that, but let’s not use it at all… we wouldn’t want it to be “unfair” and be too far from the console gamer’s experience.

The difference though is that you don’t need a top-of-the-line graphics card to be able to run better than the console. My pc and it’s contents are older than the current gen consoles.

Yes, top of the range cards are totally expensive, yes. However, the CURRENT gen consoles are struggling to hit the 1080p/60fps target

4K gaming, yes, it is quite expensive.

I don’t know, nor have I ever known, someone with a top-end card.

I had a top end single GPU card once, it was good until they decided to bring out the dual GPU solution, I then only realised that I paid about 40% more for a 20% increase in performance vs. the mid range cards…that was the last time I went full turd…

I suppose if they had graphic options, like low, ultra low and barely any textures… maybe then 60fps?
